‘The Unspoken’ Studio Insomniac Teases New VR Project, Promising an Open World Adventure

Insomniac Games, developers behind The Unspoken (2017), Edge of Nowhere (2016), and Ratchet & Clank, showed off a sneak peek of their next VR game. While still unnamed, the studio is aiming to break boundaries with what they say is ‘an open world adventure.’

The whole developer spotlight video (below) is pretty tight-lipped about what’s next, although the studio’s Principal Designer Duncan Moore says “[we wanted to] create really beautiful, immersive spaces and apply it to a new palette of open world adventure.”

“In this new project, you’ll be able to go wherever you want,” says Nina Fricker, Insomniac’s Lead Technical Animator. Fricker continues: “To be able to bring that into the VR space definitely the next evolution of what we’re going for.”

The video’s description has a cryptic line too, saying “Reclaim Your World – June 7, 2018.”

Although target platforms are still unknown, the video was published by Oculus, possibly pointing to a new Rift exclusive in the works. Both The Unspoken and Edge of Nowhere are exclusive to the Oculus platform.

No launch date is set yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see on June 7th for what Insomniac has planned next.

‘Battlezone VR’ Studio Announces VR Puzzle Game ‘Arca’s Path’, Teaser Trailer Here

Arca’s Path VR is an upcoming puzzle adventure from Dream Reality Interactive and Rebellion, the studio behind Battlezone VR (2016).

The upcoming game, which is developed by Dream Reality and published by Rebellion, is targeting PSVR, Steam VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go and Gear VR, with launch slated for later this year.

Rebellion says in a recent blogpost that no controller is needed to play, as the game relies solely on the VR headset for input.

The studios haven’t released much more information around Arca’s Path, only saying it has puzzle elements, and requires “a little bit of skill but not too much, and that it’s incredibly easy to pick up and play.”

Dream Reality Interactive’s core team previously worked at Sony’s London Studio, with titles such as PlayStation VR Worlds and AR games for Wonderbook.

‘Oculus Venues’ Live Event App Now Available on Go and Gear VR, Event Schedule Here

Oculus Venues, the social app that allows ‘thousands of users’ to watch live events en masse in VR, is now available on Oculus Go and Gear VR starting today. The company has also published a full list of upcoming live events (below).

Announced last year at Oculus Connect 4, Venues lets you connect with friends and thousands of other VR users to watch live events like concerts, sporting events, stand-up comedy, movies, and more.

Many of the live events are captured specifically for VR headsets by NextVR, including stand-up comedy from the Gotham Comedy Club, live concerts from bands via School Night, content from the NBA and MLB, and the International Champions Cup pre-season friendly soccer matches.

Concerts by Vance Joy, Chromeo, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, and Everclear are hitting Venues all throughout the summer. Other events hitting Venues later this summer include films screenings from Lionsgate Films, featuring Reservoir Dogs (1992), Sinister (2012)Apocalypse Now (1979), and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002).

Most Gear VR-compatible smartphones work with Venues, excluding Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Oculus’ Code of Conduct is also in full force, with community moderators on-hand in Venues.

You can download Oculus Venues here for Gear VR and and Oculus Go.

Oculus says they’ll be highlighting Venues events in Oculus Go and Gear VR’s ‘Explore’ section where you can subscribe to upcoming events and launch them from there.

Neat Corporation: ‘Budget Cuts’ Launch Delayed Until Further Notice

Neat Corporation today announced that Budget Cuts, their upcoming VR stealth game, is being delayed until further notice, citing framerate stability and other bugs encountered in the game.

The studio announced the news via a Reddit post, saying that the long-awaited Budget Cuts still suffers optimization issues. The studio says they’ll be taking the time to improve the game’s stability and framerate until it’s “consistent and acceptable,” delaying Budget Cuts launch until further notice.

The latest delay comes after a two-week delay earlier this month, which Neat Corp says they thought would be enough to fix the outlying issues with the game.

With the review embargo up since May 28th, we’ve already had a chance to dive in, giving it a solid [9.2/10]. In my playthrough, the bugs I encountered weren’t grave enough to consider the game unreviewable, or even remotely unplayable. In retrospect, I may have just been lucky to have seen acceptable frame rates on my admittedly higher-spec test rig and HTC Vive, and didn’t encounter anything more than what I would consider minor bugs that weren’t gamebreaking in the least, something Neat Corp said would be ironed out for launch, then scheduled for May 31st.

SEE ALSO

We did note bad optimization on Rift, but went ahead with the review on Vive anyway, giving the studio the benefit of the doubt that the press version wasn’t ready for Rift users in the first place, citing the lack of 180-degree sensor support on the press build on Steam.

“So, when will the game release? The honest answer is that we don’t know, but it’s going to be as soon as the game is as performant and stable as it should be,” says Neat Corp’s Freya Holmer. “I’d like to say we’re releasing soon, but that meant 2.5 years last time we used that term, so I’m going to say “in 5 minutes” which should mean approximately 1-2 weeks. Will it take longer? Maybe, maybe not. It’s very hard to predict when the issues we’re facing have many unknown variables and moving parts, which is why we’re not ready with a specific release date. Maybe we’ll time it perfectly with E3, to make sure our game will be drowned out by all of the other announcements.”

On the docket of items to address: occlusion culling, audio performance, eliminating rare progression-blocking bugs, and fixing screen glitches when framerate drops on Oculus Native build.

“On behalf of the Budget Cuts team,” says Holmer “we’re truly sorry, and hope you’re all okay with waiting just a little bit more.”

While disheartening to hear, we stick by our review score, and look forward to the day when users can see for themselves why we rated Budget Cuts so highly; hopefully sooner rather than later.

HTC’s New Vive Focus Headset Locker Aims to Put VR at the Forefront of Education in China

‘Beat Saber’ Sells 100K Units in First Month for $2 Million in Revenue

In its first month, Beat Saber has sold 100,000 copies across Steam and Oculus, generating $2 million in revenue—another big milestone of success for a game still in early access and made by a three-person indie studio.

Update (05/28/18): Hyperbolic Magnetism has confirmed the new figure of 100,000 units sold, something they say was accomplished in “less than a month” via a recent tweet. The studio also says their level editor, which is poised to bring users a way to bring any music and create & share levels, is still in the works.

The original article detailing the 50K milestone follows below:

Original article (05/14/18): Beat Saber developer Hyperbolic Magnetism confirmed the 50,000 figure on Twitter, suggesting that 100,000 units isn’t far off. At $20 a pop, the game has generated around $1 million in revenue, before the 30% cut taken out by the storefronts.

Considering the game’s independent development, VR’s niche status, and the fact that the game has yet to be launched on PSVR, Beat Saber is a clear indie success, even now just two weeks after its early access launch.

Consider Fez (2012)—one of the best received indie games of the last decade—which took a little more than a month and a half to hit 100,000 unit sales. Yes, it was exclusive to the Xbox at launch, but that still represented a potential audience that was many times larger than all of the high end VR headsets today.

SEE ALSO
Playing 'Beat Saber' Could Burn the Same Number of Calories as Tennis

And Beat Saber likely has most of its sales still to come. Despite its polish, the game is still in early access, with the developers still to add one of the top requested features: a track builder for user generated levels. And the game has yet to launch for PSVR, which would increase its potential audience by more than 2 million—which could be more than double what it is with PC VR headsets alone.

Beat Saber’s not-so-secret secret to success seems to have a lot to do with its balance of immediate fun, high accessibility, and motion-driven gameplay—attributes that anyone developing for VR should be heavily considering.

12 Minutes of ‘Budget Cuts’ Gameplay – From the Beginning

Budget Cuts (2018) is a room-scale VR stealth game from indie studio Neat Corporation. Launching on May 31st on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, we took the time to show you just what this objectively fantastic game looks like from the very beginning.

Banter from office drones is a near-constant in Budget Cuts, as the docile bots are designed to replace your human colleagues. It’s the military-grade security bots you have to watch out for, using your teleporation gun to sneakily zip around the vast office complex and dispatch the gun-totting robots before they get a chance to shoot you first.

For more info, check out our full review of Budget Cuts, which we gave a solid [9.2/10] for its killer VR game mechanics, its engaging story, and the adrenaline-soaked feeling that comes part and parcel with hiding under a desk, hoping to fly under the radar of the see-all, kill-all robotic enemies.

We are back in DCS World 2.5 VR Flight Simulator and the F/A-18C Hornet, doing Aerial Air to Air Refueling practice (In-Flight) on a C-130 Tanker aircraft above the Persian Gulf map in VR with Samsung Odyssey! The FA-18 Hornet for Digital Combat Simulator is the new flagship among DCS 2.5 aircraft modules, and today I'm learning how to make an in-flight aerial refueling (air to air refuelling with KC-130), above the beautiful upcoming Persian Gulf DCS World map. The Digital Combat Simulator World 2.5 edition is getting a new aircraft module and map by the end of this month, May 2018. HTC Announces Strategic Partnerships With MLB & McLaren Formula One Team

At the Vive Ecosystem Conference (VEC) in Shenzhen today, HTC announced new VR initiatives in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) and McLaren Racing, the Formula One racing team.

Looking to take advantage of the growing baseball trend in China, HTC is partnering with the American baseball league to bring two MLB fan engagement initiatives to China, including the Chinese-language reality TV show Perfect Pitch to the Tencent video network, and a Baseball Park roadshow to 10 major cities across the country.

HTC also announced a long-term strategic partnership with Formula One team McLaren to jointly produce VR products and VR/AR content.

McLaren is also slated to release a VR eSports racing competition with HTC as an official VR partner. The competition is said to “search the world for people who will ultimately become part of the McLaren racing team,” the companies say in a press release.

The announcement comes on the heels of a few important updates coming to HTC Vive Focus, the company’s standalone 6DOF headset set for international release soon.

Here’s a Look Inside Both Samsung & JDI’s High Pixel Density VR Panels

SID Display Week played host to a number of big names in display technology showing off their respective high pixel density VR panels. UploadVR’s Ian Hamilton was on the scene, and managed to get a pretty good capture of both Samsung’s and JDI’s panels with his iPhone 8 camera.

Samsung showed off their 2.43-inch, 3,840 × 2,160 resolution (120Hz) panel through the lenses of a VR headset, although it appears from UploadVR‘s video that only static imagery was shown to SID Display Week attendees. The panel on display features 1,200 pixels per inch (PPI), and although not explicitly mentioned, is probably a derivation of their OLED VR panel first shown at Mobile World Congress last year.

Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a display conglomerate created by Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, debuted their high pixel density display at Display Week, showing off the 3.25-inch, 2,160 × 2,432 resolution TFT-LCD (120Hz). JDI’s panel features 1,001 PPI. As opposed to Samsung’s display, attendees were treated to a moving scene.

According to a recent tweet by Hamilton, the screen door effect (SDE) was is still apparent on Samsung’s display, while JDI’s display had a marked reduction of SDE to the point where he couldn’t see it at all.

These displays likely take a good amount of graphical rendering power to run at such high resolutions and fresh rates, so it makes sense why they were displayed in cases rather than a wearable VR headsets.

Foveated rendering is touted as a solution to the current ‘brute force’ method of displaying the full resolution of a scene across the majority of the display, and utilizes eye-tracking and a dedicated rendering pipeline in order to show the highest resolution image in the center of the photoreceptor-dense part of the eye, the fovea, making these sorts of panels viable even for mobile VR headsets.

As an added bit of info: both panels were shown using standard refractive lenses, like those found in Gear VR, and not the more common Fresnel lenses found in current generation mobile VR headsets such as Google Daydream, Oculus Go, and HTC Vive Focus—something likely done to not muddy the view with visual artifacts associated with Fresnel lenses such as ‘god rays’, or faint streaks or glares of light that are most noticeable when looking at bright objects against a dark background.

Our friends over at UploadVR also have an interesting piece on Google And LG’s new 1,443 PPI VR display, also debuted at SID earlier this week.

Hulu’s VR Comedy Series ‘Door No. 1’ Launches Today, Catch the Trailer Here

Hulu’s new VR comedy Door No. 1 launches today on the Hulu VR app. Written and directed by Nora Kirkpatrick (The Office, Greeks) and produced by AOL’s AR/VR studio RYOT, the single-episode VR comedy will be available on Oculus Go, Samsung Gear VR, PSVR, Google Daydream and Oculus Rift.

Presented in 360 degrees, Door No. 1 strings together live-action sequences in a sort of ‘choose your own adventure’ format, giving the user multiple ways to experience the story and different decisions to make throughout.

According to Hulu’s description of the show, Door No. 1 puts you in the shoes of Alex, the silent protagonist of the experience. Set in a 10 year high school reunion, you’ll “be able to get high with the janitor, dance until they drag you off the floor, and seize one last chance to prove yourself.” Smoking weed with the janitor, played by Snoop Dog, sounds like a definite highlight.

The show’s cast has a number of other familiar faces too including Steve Little (Eastbound and Down), Ravi Patel (Wrecked, Meet The Patels), Kyle Bornheimer (Casual), Missi Pyle (Another Period), Mircea Monroe (Episodes), Sarah Baker (Big Little Lies), Johnny Pemberton (Superstore), John Gemberling (Broad City), Lucas Neff (Raising Hope), Sheaun McKinney (Vice Principals) and  Barry Rothbart (The Wolf of Wall Street).

The show is likely to only be available in countries where Hulu maintains its service, which includes the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and U.S. military bases. Check out Hulu’s VR site to learn how to download and watch.

GameFace Starts Dev Kit Pre-orders for Standalone Headset with Tethered SteamVR Support, Powerful NVIDIA Chip

GameFace Labs, a company that’s been in ongoing development of an ambitious standalone VR headset over the last few years, has finally opened pre-orders for its dev kit, a system built around NVIDIA’s powerful Jetson TX2 computing platform. Priced at $600, the device is fully self-contained running a custom Android operating system, but can also be tethered to a PC for full compatibility with SteamVR content, including support for SteamVR Tracking.

GameFace Labs has been working on its vision of the ultimate standalone VR headset for several years, and while the company missed its former goal of getting dev kits in developers hands by the end of 2017, they appear closer than ever to getting something out the door. Today the company announced the start of pre-orders for its dev kit, priced at $600, which is says will begin shipping out in just a few weeks time. The company expects the consumer version of the headset to launch toward the end of 2018, and tells Road to VR that developers who purchase the dev kit will also be sent a consumer unit when complete.

The GameFace dev kit is built around NVIDIA’s Jetson TX2 module, a powerful system designed for AI-heavy devices, which includes a pair of 2GHz CPUs and a Pascal-based GPU with 256 CUDA cores, all together rated for 7.5W TDP. That’s some heavy duty computing power compared to other standalone headsets available today—though we’re curious to know what battery life will end up looking like.

And while the headset is shaping up to be a powerhouse of its own, GameFace calls the device a “hybrid,” and says it’ll be the first such headset which can also be tethered to a host PC to natively play SteamVR content thanks to its built-in SteamVR Tracking hardware. Last year the company demonstrated the headset’s SteamVR Tracking tech to Road to VR, which can track the headset while being used for tethered SteamVR content or standalone content run locally on the headset via Android.

The GameFace Labs dev kit might seem a bit odd compared to other standalone headsets on the market today, but could prove to be a compelling buy for developers—at $600, a single headset which could be used for both mobile and tethered VR development could offer value compared to buying separate headsets for developing on each. And for consumers, the ability to play content across Android and PC ecosystems with a single device would be a standout feature next to other headsets available today—though GameFace will either need to build strong developer traction for its own mobile content ecosystem, or link up with Google (Daydream) or HTC (Viveport mobile) ecosystems to have easy access to compelling content on the mobile side.

Developers interested in the dev kit can pre-order by signing up to become a GameFace Labs developer, though requests will be selectively approved by the company for the time being. The company says developers won’t be charged until their headset ships, and expects that to begin in the next few weeks.

Sony Japan Studio Announces VR Platformer ‘Astro Bot Rescue Mission’ For PSVR, Teaser Trailer Here

Sci-fi Shooter ‘Evasion’ to Arrive on PSVR This Fall, AIM Support Confirmed

Evasion, an upcoming sci-fi bullet-hell shooter from Vancouver-based studio Archiact, was previously confirmed for release on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive this Fall. Archiact today announced that PSVR owners will have a chance at the robo-bug killing adventure too, which includes support for AIM, the PSVR gun peripheral introduced with Farpoint (2017) last year.

Evasion, slated to arrive sometime in Fall 2018, will offer both single and team multiplayer, pitting you in a campaign against an alien race of robots dubbed the ‘Optera’.

Boasting four playable classes, Evasion includes two assault classes—the heavily armored Warden, and the lighter armored Striker, and two support classes —the Surgeon and Engineer, both of which can use a ‘Tether’ ability to respectively heal damage and boost their allies weapons. Players can use their Tether to snatch enemies out of the air and destroy them by hurl them against buildings.

The game is said to use ‘free locomotion’, aka smooth locomotion, meaning no teleportation. Archiact says in a press release that there are also “balanced options for all player sensitivities.”

Like the PC VR version, the Evasion for PSVR will include full body avatars, with inverse kinematics powered by IKinema.

It’s uncertain at this point if Evasion will include cross-play between PSVR and PC VR versions of the game. We’ve reached out to Archiact for clarification and will update this article accordingly.

Sony: PS4 Enters “final phase of life cycle,” Next PlayStation to Come in 3 Years

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is entering its ‘final phase’, according to a recent tweet by Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki, citing a talk with PlayStation Chief Tsuyoshi Kodera. But the console’s wind-down may last longer than you think—three years before the next PS console arrives, says Kodera in a recent interview with WSJ.

“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” Kodera told The Wall Street Journal.

The announcement came shortly after new Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida announced a three-year business plan to shift the company’s focus towards content and recurring revenue generators like PS Plus, PS4’s online subscription service.

“Sony PlayStation is our largest ‘community of interest’ with 80 million monthly subscribers on the PlayStation Network,” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said.

Since PS4’s release in 2013, the console has sold more than 79 million units. That figure includes PlayStation 4 Pro, the console’s hardware overhaul that allows 4K rendering and improves PSVR performance, which launched in November 2016.

Kodera says PSVR sales are growing, although it’s admittedly under Sony’s expectations. Citing official figures released in late 2017, over two million PSVR’s have been sold worldwide since the headset’s release in October 2016.

Kodera told a group of journalists, WSJ included, that Sony company is currently looking at ways to better incorporate mobility into the PlayStation, similar to how Nintendo Switch can play equally as a portable device and at-home console.

What this means for Sony’s VR strategy, we’re not sure. Considering PSVR already taxes PS4/Pro’s rendering capabilities, a true PSVR 2.0 is likely out of the question before the next console product cycle. But as the lines blur between console and portable however—and inevitably the same shifts are mirrored across mobile VR and ‘tethered’ VR headsets with headsets like Oculus’ Project Santa Cruz poised to redefine mobile VR with its wireless, 6DOF capabilities—Sony’s next big move in the realm of VR may look very different three years from now.

Whatever the case may be, PSVR looks like it will be around for the next three years. As the only console-compatible VR headset on the market, continued growth is mostly assured as both console and headset prices decrease in the long wait for Sony’s next big move.

Open-World Survival Game ‘The Forest’ Gets Beta VR Support in New Update

The Forest (2018), a first-person open world-survival game from Endnight, launched out of a four-year stint on Steam Early Access last month. Starting today, The Forest has a few new badges on its Steam listing, including support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The inclusion of VR headset support, which is now free and available in beta, lets users plays the full single player game in VR, and replaces the game’s 2D heads-up display with a smart watch strapped to your arm. The Forest for VR, which currently doesn’t feature multiplayer support, also includes a full 3D inventory and 3D survival book, and the ability to interact with the world via motion controls.

The VR version includes full bow aiming, throwing flares by breaking the tops off them, lighting molotovs with your lighter, and chopping down trees.

Endnight says in a Steam forum update that beta users should “expect some bugs and technical issues. We’ll be updating this branch regularly.”

In single player mode, you step into the shoes of the sole survivor of a jet crash, marooned in a mysterious forest in the wilds of British Columbia. It’s not all flapjacks and maple syrup though, as the woods are filled with cannibalistic mutants out for blood, compelling you to explore and build defenses to survive. The Forest for PC also boasts multiplayer co-op so you can battle the elements (and cannibals) and explore the game’s massive terrain and vast subterranean labyrinths together.

The base game (Steam link) includes the ability to:

  • Chop down trees to build a camp, or start a fire to keep warm. Scavenge food to keep yourself from starving.
  • Build a small shelter or a large ocean side fortress. Lay traps and defences to keep a safe perimeter.
  • Explore and build during the day. Defend your base at night. Craft weapons and tools. Bunker down during the evening or bring the fight directly to the enemy.
  • Defend yourself against a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have beliefs, families, morals and that appear almost human.
  • Use stealth to evade enemies, or engage them directly with crude weapons built from sticks and stones.

Road to VR Readership Survey 2018

Road to VR is running a survey with our partner Gamer Network to better understand our audience. Your participation is entirely optional and anonymous, but we’d be thrilled if you’d share your responses with us.

You may recall that Road to VR announced a partnership with Eurogamer parent company Gamer Network last year. In an era where many publications are allowing paid and sponsored content to increasingly bleed into editorial, this partnership allows us to create an important firewall between editorial and advertising activities on Road to VR.

The Gamer Network Readership Survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is shared across Eurogamer and Gamer Network sister sites. It covers a range of topics: your gaming tastes and habits, what gaming equipment you own or intend to buy, which gaming sites you read, your other leisure pastimes and so on. The survey is anonymous and we won’t be able to tell who you are by the answers you give.

The survey helps us build an accurate picture of our audience and what they care about, so we know who we’re talking to. It also helps make sure there’s advertising on the site that’s relevant, and in so doing it helps us pay the bills.

So, if you have a moment, please consider doing us a favour and fill out the questionnaire. Thanks!

Oculus Brings ‘Boggle’ to Social VR App ‘Rooms’, More Hasbro Games ‘coming soon’

Oculus first announced that Boggle and other Hasbro board games would be coming to Oculus’ mobile VR platform back at F8, Facebook’s developer conference. Now the day has arrived, at least for Boggle, as users on Gear VR and Oculus Go can already play the mind-boggling word game for free in Oculus Rooms, the company’s social VR app on mobile.

Oculus Rooms lets you play Hasbro’s Boggle with up to three other players using Oculus Go or Gear VR headsets. The company says that Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit are also “coming soon.”

Oculus Rooms was entirely revamped in inauguration of Go, which not only hosts a place for VR chats, but also a communal app launcher so friends can jump into multiplayer games simultaneously.

Besides the addition of board games, Rooms also includes a screen where you can share photos, listen to music, a place to communally watch purchased and rented movies from the Oculus Store.

Microsoft Releases Free Preview For ‘Remote Assist’ & ‘Layout’ Enterprise AR/VR Apps

Microsoft appears to be seeing strong traction with HoloLens in the enterprise space, and the company continues to expand its “Mixed Reality” platform in that sector, promising businesses time and money savings. Two new applications to address this, Remote Assist & Layout—announced at Microsoft Build earlier this month—are now available in free, limited-time previews.

Update (05/22/18): Both Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout are now available in a free, limited-time preview.

Remote Assist (preview download) requires a HoloLens headset and a Windows 10 PC, iOS, or Android device with Microsoft Teams. Layout (preview download) requires a Windows Mixed Reality immersive headset and compatible PC. At this time it’s uncertain how long the preview period will last.

The original article announcing both apps continues below:

Original article (05/07/18)Revealed on the Windows 10 Blog today, Microsoft Remote Assist is a new HoloLens app which seeks to remotely connect firstline workers—those who go hands-on to fix issues and maintain important equipment—with those who can support them with important information. The app steams a first-person view from the worker (via HoloLens), and allows collaborators to remotely annotate the view in real-time. It appears that the annotations aren’t just simple picture-on-picture markings, but actual augmented annotations that properly ‘attach’ to the view of the real world. Images can also be inserted into the scene.

In the concept video above, we can see that the collaborators are able to connect across different devices, including PC and mobile, offering a floating video chat window to the HoloLens user. Microsoft says this is made possible through Microsoft Teams integration, and the company promises “industry-leading identity and security measures”—especially important as businesses may be broadcasting sensitive information over such platforms.

The second application the company introduced today is Microsoft Layout. Supporting both HoloLens and Windows VR headsets, the application aims to help big businesses create virtual layouts for large facilities, in order to ensure that equipment fits correctly before being purchased and brought into the facility. The app also supports collaboration by connecting stakeholders to a feed of the virtual layout for discussion and editing in real-time.

The concept video above shows how layouts can be viewed just as easily through HoloLens or Windows VR headsets.

– – — – –

Microsoft says that both applications will be part of Microsoft 365, and launch as a limited-time free previews on May 22nd. Interested parties should head here to learn more about participating in the previews.

‘WipEout Omega’ For PSVR & PS4 is Getting a Free Demo Tomorrow

Ever since WipEout Omega Collection (2017) added support for PSVR back in March, it became the de facto gold standard of anti-grav VR racing on the platform. Now, users looking to pop their head in to see what all the fuss is about should have their eyeballs pointed to PSN starting tomorrow, as Sony is tossing out a free WipEout Omega Collection demo replete with PSVR support.

Announced on Sony’s PS blog, you’ll be able to play on both PS4 and PSVR. For VR users, the demo includes the traditional Feisar ship, or the new Feisar VR ship and a single race on two different tracks from HD and 2048 modes.

Sony recommends new players stick to the default ‘Lock Camera To Cockpit’ controls, which ought to reduce artificial motion-based nausea (read: simulator sickness). While that’s probably the msot comfortable way to play, the ‘Lock Camera to Pilot’ mode is going to give you what you came for: the first-person experience of screaming around corners and looping around inside an anti-grav ship.

We went hands-on with the free PSVR update, and while the risk of nausea is real using the more immersive modes, it’s nothing short of a smart and skillful adaptation that brings PSVR users what they’ve been pining for: an honest-to-goodness VR WipEout.

Check out the full race below to get a peek into what lays ahead.
