‘Beat Saber’ Reveals New Track Ahead of Details on April Launch

After getting our hands on VR rhythm lightsaber game Beat Saber at GDC 2018 last week, we’ve been looking forward to more information on the game’s release date which is so far set to fall in April. Now developer Hyperbolic Magnetism has revealed a new song, which will launch with the game, and plans to announce the precise release date next week.

Beat Saber will launch on Steam in Early Access in April, but exactly which day is still (painfully) unknown. Today the game’s composer, Jaroslav Beck, today revealed another one of the game’s 10 confirmed launch tracks, titled Legend:

Developer Jan “Split” Ilavsky said today on Twitter that the new song is “hopefully the last song released before the game release,” and that a release date announcement for Beat Saber will come next week.

High Fidelity & NeoSensory Partner to Launch ‘exoskin’ Haptic Jacket, Coming July 2018

High Fidelity, the open source VR platform founded by Second Life creator Philp Rosedale, and NeoSensory, a Palo Alto-based haptics company, announced they’ve partnered to create a haptic jacket dubbed the ‘exoskin’.

A beta version of the device, which is available for pre-oder through NeoSensory for $400, features 32 sensory motors, and will support High Fidelity’s titular open source VR platform.

Developers can build haptic applications that control the exoskin with JavaScript in High Fidelity, allowing developers to add features such as sensing people at a distance, signaling directions or conveying tension as part of an in-world experience.

The target release date of exoskin is slated for July, 2018.

Venture Beat‘s Dean Takahashi went hands-on with exoskin while jacked into a High Fidelity nightclub using an Oculus Rift, saying that he and another journalist “spent some time touching each other, and I could feel the sensations of touch on my torso and back via the haptic sensors on the vest. It was a buzzing sort of feeling.”

Co-founded by neuroscientists Dr. David Eagleman and Dr. Scott Novich in 2013, NeoSensory offers several haptic products already, including a wrist-mounted haptic devices for the deaf, and a haptic vest dubbed simply ‘VEST’ (Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer) which was featured in Season 2 of HBO’s Westworld.

While High Fidelity’s platform is technically hardware agnostic, CEO Philip Rosedale says that NeoSensory “solves the absence of touch in VR” thanks to the company’s “deep neuroscience research and experience with haptic response.”

High Fidelity is focusing on building the foundation of a truly scalable VR platform. Late last year the company integrated DigitalOcean’s cloud server technology which lets High Fidelity users create their own cloud-hosted ‘VR domain’. In addition to its own centrally-regulated cryptocurrency High Fidelity Coin (HFC), they’ve also created the beginnings of an online economy, replete with virtual shops and a digital registry tied to the blockchain that verifies ownership and the exchange of digital goods.

“We are very excited to extend our product leadership into making VR a better experience,” Rosedale said, speaking about NeoSensory’s exoskin.

10 Minutes of ‘Vacation Simulator’ Gameplay, Owlchemy Labs’ Sequel to ‘Job Simulator’

Owlchemy Labs, the studio behind Job Simulator (2016) and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality (2017), are back again with a new whimsical take on the simulator-satire genre – Vacation Simulator.

Unveiled at this year’s GDC, we got a chance to go hands-on with the colorful, object-based game that puts you in an imperfect simulation of what life must have been like before all the jobs (and now vacations) were replaced by automated labor.

Taking what they’ve learned from their previous titles, Owlchemy Labs is setting Vacation Simulator apart from Job Simulator by offering multiple interlinked areas which can be traversed by node teleportation, letting you pop into sections of the game that offer room-scale activities like playing beach games, building sand castles and chomping down on popsicles you can buy with sand dollars (replete with a $ dollar sign). There’s also a narrative at play, although we’ve only seen one area in the demo, so what that’s supposed to be, we just can’t say.

Check out our hands-on with Vacation Simulator to hear all the fun you’ll be having in the virtual sun.

Vacation Simulator is slated to arrive on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PSVR sometime later this year.

4 Minutes of Boxing Glory in ‘Creed’ VR, Gameplay Video Here

Survios, the studio behind Raw Data (2017) and Sprint Vector (2018), debuted a new single player VR game this year on the GDC expo floor, an upcoming arcade boxing title that puts you in the shoes of Adonis Creed, son of Apollo Creed and protegĂ© of Rocky Balboa.

It’s hard not to stop and gawk at people playing Creed: Rise to Glory in pair of actual boxing rings on the expo floor. While a small crowd of curious onlookers formed around the side-by-side rings, we got a chance to record a first look of the game in action.

The demo first puts you in the gym with a lifelike Sylvester Stallone where you train with heavy bags and punching dummies, each their own minigame. Later you’re tossed into the ring to experience the game’s unique desync mechanic which not only slows down your in-game boxing gloves as you lose stamina, but can knock you completely out of your body if you get staggered or even knocked out.

Check out our heart-pumping hands-on with Creed: Rise to Glory from this year’s GDC.

Survios hasn’t announced which platform the arcade boxer will hit when it arrives later this year, although we’ve seen it demoed both on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

‘Electronauts’ Turns Anyone Into an Electronic Music Artist, Gameplay Video Here

Survios, the studio behind Raw Data (2017) and Sprint Vector (2018), showed off Electronauts at GDC this year, their upcoming VR music creation app for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift that makes DJ’ing so easy that even the least musically talented person can do it.

While it hasn’t substantively changed since we saw it first at CES in January, it’s the first time Electronauts has been put on display in a public venue.

The app lets you easily mix music and create something actually listenable because every interaction in Electronauts is quantized, meaning every time you activate an instrument or loop a track, it automatically clicks on beat. Using your in-game selector wands to toss out ‘beat grenades’ or jam on samples using an orb-like drum kit – well, that’s something only available in virtual reality. Check out our hands-on with Electronauts to learn more.

Electronauts is still slated to release sometime in 2018. There’s already a Steam page, and Survios is currently entertaining applications for their ‘Creator Beta’ which will launch soon for Vive and Rift owners.

Vive China President Shares 16 Lessons for a VR-First Future From ‘Ready Player One’

‘Gran Turismo Sport’ Update Brings Time Trials to ‘PSVR Mode’

Gran Turismo Sport (2017), the VR-compatible PS4 racing sim, just got an update that lets PSVR owners take a crack at two race circuits in time trial mode.

GT Sport isn’t exactly a fully fledged PSVR title as such, since you can’t play the full game in VR. You’re instead relegated to a much less extensive “VR Arcade” mode that features all racetracks but only a single AI opponent with a non-adjustable (and frankly laughable) difficulty.

Small recompense: you’ll now be able speed around both Nurburgring and Suzuka race circuits in time trial mode, which at very least adds a touch more replayablity to the title which has basically languished for PSVR owners since launch – outside the odd update that added more cars and tracks to the list, that is.

And no, the game still doesn’t feature multiplayer, and it’s possible it never will, according to a GameWatch interview (Japanese) with game designer Kazunori Yamauchi.

“Although I do not have plans for multiplayer at the moment, I am planning to make time trials possible in VR mode with future updates,” said Yamauchi.

Augmented Reality Startup Ubiquity6 Emerges from Stealth With $10.5M in Funding

Ubiquity6, an augmented reality startup only a few months out of stealth, today announced a $10.5M Series A round led by Index Ventures, with First Round Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Google’s AI fund Gradient Ventures, LDVP, A&E Networks and WndrCo.

The company, which is working to solve problems in real-time 3D mapping, photogrammetry, multi-user localization, and deep learning for semantic understanding of the environment, recently revealed their opening gambit—an AR app for iOS and Android that they say “lets you turn any physical location into a space for all kinds of shared experiences.”

In a recent blog post, the company revealed they’re focusing on the social aspects of smartphone-driven augmented reality, and pushing for more persistent AR interactions, or what the company says will allow “anybody with a smartphone to edit reality.” Some of the examples shown by Ubiquity6 include watering persistent, virtual plants in a public square, creating an collaborative AR sculpture, and playing a game of AR basketball with multiple users.

The Ubiquity app for iOS, Android and VR is due out sometime this summer. The video below was shot directly from the Ubiquity app for iOS.

Founded early last year by Anjney Midha (CEO) and Ankit Kumar (CTO), who were roommates during their previous undergrad years at Stanford, the company is made up of engineers, designers and advisors with previous experience at Metamind, Twitter, Facebook, Tesla, Magic Leap, Electronic Arts and Zynga. Ubiquity6 exited stealth in September 2017, although at the time didn’t detail the extent of the Series A.

If you’re curious about what Ubiquity6 is cooking up (we are), you can sign up for early access to the company’s Ubiquity app for iOS, Android and VR here.

Sony has announced a $100 price drop to their PlayStation VR headset across the board. The PSVR Doom VFR bundle now starts at $300 and the PSVR Skyrim bundle runs $350.

‘Wipeout: Omega Collection’ PSVR Support Now Available in Free Update – Full Game & All Modes

PlayStation’s legendary anti-grav arcade racer can now proudly display the ‘PSVR-compatible’ badge thanks to a free update pushed out today to WipEout: Omega Collection for PS4.

Update (03/28/18): Announced via a PlayStation blog post, Wipeout’s PSVR update is finally here. For owners of the game, simply update it, switch on your headset and your main menu will transform into a 3D world with ships zooming right past you.

Original Article (12/12/17): WipEout is the long running anti-grav racing franchise from Sony Studio Liverpool. With 10 games since 1995, the legendary franchise is known for its high speed, adrenaline pumping gameplay, and for its curated selection of cult electronica. And now its finally coming to PSVR.

Via a free update to PS4’s WipEout: Omega Collection (which includes WipEout HD {2008}, WipEout HD Fury {2009} and WipEout 2048 {2012}), PSVR owners will finally be able to step into the cockpit for a level of immersion that only VR can provide. The update is due in “early 2018.”

Sony XDev Senior Producer John McLaughlin notes on the official PlayStation Blog that players can “race in every track, across every game mode, off or online.” The game is also getting “full 3D audio,” presumably so you can hear opponents (and their incoming fire) all around you. PSVR players will also be treated to three exclusive ships with fully modeled interiors.

Oculus Teases First-party Rift Title ‘Defector’, Debuting Next Week at PAX East

In a torrent of news surrounding the two-year anniversary of Rift’s commercial launch, Oculus today revealed a little more about one of upcoming first-party Rift titles previously teased by VP of Content Jason Rubin.

Not much is known about the game outside of its name, Defector, and the studio producing it, Twisted Pixel Games. Twisted Pixel is known for their recent VR title Wilson’s Heart (2017), which was published by Oculus Studios.

Rubin previously teased in a tweet inaugurating the launch of Brass Tactics (2018) to “stay tuned to PAX East for more Oculus Rift games.”

Tucked away at the end of a recent Oculus blog post, the company say they’re “inspired by the VR community’s passion and look forward to even more milestones to come. As our Rift Anniversary celebration continues, keep an eye out at PAX East for the reveal of a new Oculus Studios title—you won’t want to miss the first look at this original concept from Twisted Pixel Games!”

Rubin recently stated in a GDC 2018 session that Oculus would be producing fewer first-party titles, but that they would be ‘bigger and better’ than previous titles funded by the company. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for Twisted Pixel’s Defector and whatever else Oculus has planned for PAX East, which takes place April 5-8 in Boston, MA.

‘Island Time VR’ to Launch on All Major Platforms April 3rd, ‘5 Ways to Die’ Launch Trailer Here

Island Time VR, a room-scale survival game from Flight School Studio, is launching April 3rd on PSVR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and other Steam VR-compatible headsets for $15. In preparation for your inevitable death ahead, Flight School also released a launch trailer showing the top 5 ways you can inadvertently kill yourself.

With Carl the Crab at your side, you’ll craft tools, fend off threatening creatures, and catch and collect food you’ll cook up yourself—all in the effort of surviving on your tiny room-scale-sized desert island.

Island Time VR features an event system that automatically doles out resources, so castaways have to perform tasks before resources are restocked. Of course, when you’re not staring at your watch waiting for your hunger meter to reach critical levels, you can always enjoy a beautiful tropical sunset.

“The game’s difficulty curve and secrets are designed to be discovered over multiple playthroughs,” said Adam Volker, Creative Director at Flight School Studio. “The player might craft a new item or find new foodstuffs they haven’t seen before. This trial and error is what teaches players to survive as long as they can.”

Oh, and if Carl sounds strangely familiar, it’s because he’s voiced by YouTube channel Kinda Funny Games co-founder Greg Miller.

The main villain, Zavolto, is voiced by Game of Thrones actor Aidan Gillen, known for his role as Lord Petyr Baelish, (aka ‘Little Finger’). Check out why we gave it a sturdy [7.5/10] in our review.

In honor of the Rift’s two-year anniversary, Oculus is also throwing out the chance to win prizes in the first ‘Rift Gold Rush’ raffle that’s pulling from a $28,000 prize pool including Oculus Store credit, a new PC, and even a chance to win a ‘Golden Account’, which gives one lucky Rifter an account with 100 free games.

To enter, simply play a multiplayer game on March 31st between 1PM and 2 PM PT (local starting time here).

Oculus PC SDK Adds NVIDIA Lens Matched Shading to Boost Performance

Oculus’ PC SDK version 1.19 now supports NVIDIA’s VRWorks Lens Matched Shading (LMS) technique, offering “a performance boost and a slight quality improvement” on supported GPUs.

Lens Matched Shading is part of NVIDIA’s VRWorks toolset, and takes advantage of the architecture of the company’s Pascal-based GPUs to better match the pre-warped VR image to the final output image, thereby reducing the rendering of pixels that would otherwise not be visible after the distortion-correction phase. LMS also provides a more even distribution of pixel sampling between the initially rendered image and what ends up being seen through the lens. Back in 2016, NVIDIA offered an approachable explanation of LMS.

This week, Oculus announced the addition of LMS to their PC SDK 1.19. The company details the implementation in depth at their developer blog, and said that the feature “provides a performance boost and a slight quality improvement.”

NVIDIA’s LMS has been available in special builds of Unity and Unreal Engine for some time, but now that it’s built directly into Oculus’ SDK, developers working outside of those engines will have easier access to the feature, and it’s likely that Unity and Unreal Engine will see ongoing support for LMS in their main branch releases, making it more accessible to developers.

LMS relies on GPUs based on NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture (GTX 1060 and Quadro P4000, and above). With 92.2% of Rift users using NVIDIA GPUs (65.8% Pascal-based), according to Oculus’ hardware report at the time of writing, the addition of LMS seems like a pragmatic way for the company to bring performance gains to many of its users, though investing in NVIDIA-specific technologies certainly doesn’t curry favor with AMD and its users.

Ubisoft Pulls Plug on IBM Watson Integration in ‘Star Trek: Bridge Crew’

Watson, IBM’s artificial intelligence platform designed to understand natural language, launched support for Star Trek: Bridge Crew (2017) across all VR platforms back in June of last year. Now, Ubisoft says in a recent forum post, it’s pulling support for Watson due to unspecified “technical reasons.”

Bridge Crew players could choose between multiplayer and single player modes, the latter of which allowed you to fill in the roles of the ship’s other posts—Engineering, Tactical, Helm—by clicking a few boxes to issue orders. You could even jump in and take command yourself, although it was decidedly a much slower way of dealing with incoming Klingon threats. Adding Watson integration essentially allowed a sole player to issue orders to the non-human-controlled posts from the captain’s chair using natural language such as “lock on target, dude!” – “fire photon torpedoes, dumdum!” – or “go to warp now, please! And make it snappy!”

Ubisoft says that the nine-month access period has been “enriching,” but that Watson will be “discontinued for technical reasons on March 29, 2018.”

Frankly, Bridge Crew has undergone very few updates following its May 2017 launch. Minor bug fixes in June were followed by Watson integration, and then the game was opened up to non-VR players in a bid to rejuvenate its multiplayer mode. For such a solid game—we rated it [9/10] in our review—the company has done minimal work in expanding the campaign or offering DLC.

It’s unclear what Ubisoft will do in its wake, although the company has said more information about upcoming updates should arrive “very soon.”

‘Silicon Valley’ VR Experience Lets You Explore The Show’s Palo Alto Home

HTC Vive users will have a chance to walk into a VR version of HBO’s Silicon Valley house soon. The Palo Alto home, which is owned by the series’ eccentric startup guru Erlich Bachman (T.J. Miller), was lovingly recreated in VR, replete with ‘always blue’ ball, foosball, and yes, even a bong.

Called Silicon Valley: Inside the Hacker Hostel, the experience is landing on Viveport March 25th, giving you a chance to walk around the house and fulfill objectives given to you by the show’s characters – Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) and Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani).

According development studio Rewind, you’ll have one-on-one encounters with Dinesh, Gilfoyle, Richard (Thomas Middleditch), Big Head (Josh Brener) and Jian-Yang (Jimmy O. Yang). You’ll be able to demo the show’s infamous Not Hot Dog app and find a secret message from Jared, and help Richard out of a coding crisis. Rewind says there are 756 items to interact with.

Silicon Valley: Inside the Hacker Hostel was created in promotion of the TV show’s upcoming fifth season which starts tomorrow, March 25th.

Oculus Affirms Commitment to PC VR, Believes PC Will Lead the VR Industry for the Next Decade

Hands-on: ‘Beat Saber’ is Every Bit as Fun as It Looks

At GDC this year, I had a chance to step into Beat Saber, an upcoming rhythm game from Czech Republic-based indie studio Hyperbolic Magnetism that tasks you with slicing flying cubes with lightsabers to electronic dance music. If that sounds cool to you, then you’re in luck. It is cool – but more than that, it’s also ridiculously well executed.

It’s a deceptively simple concept; blocks appear about a 20 meters away marked with colored directional arrows. The color of the arrow corresponds with the color of your lightsaber, so you have to slice the right block in the right direction, and do it on the beat (more or less). The tutorial level I played before actually getting into the gameplay was about as short as that description.

In case you missed the teaser that went viral earlier this year, garnering 1.5 million views so far, here it is:

Obstacles are tactically placed to get you moving. A combo-breaking glass wall will periodically slide into view, sometimes making you move to the left or right, and sometimes making you duck for cover for fear of losing your precious combo multiplier. Blocks bearing an ‘X’ force you to not only be accurate in your slices, but move your sabers to safe positions so you don’t accidentally hit them.

Slicing a few blocks isn’t that difficult. The challenge comes in economizing your movements so you can whip through a dense patch of blocks, slicing downwards and resetting for a quick left and right swipe.

Without knowing it, I was dancing – not as great as, say, Kent Bye from Voices of VR Podcast (seen below), but I was unexpectedly moving my feet, getting into the rhythm of the game and having a blast. Even though the game doesn’t give out points for style, Beat Saber created an immediate need for me to be stylish.

Some of this can be chalked up to the game’s haptics, which create a satisfying buzz in your controller when you touch anything with your sabers. I found myself artfully dragging my lightsabers against the glass barriers while slicing down blocks, and feeling the rumble of what my brain plausibly accepted as an energy beam slicing through anything and everything. This little addition helped be feel like the swords were really there, and gave me an instant mental model of their size and reach.

The impossible, twisting architectures swaying ahead of me and neon lightshow blazing in the background are an exclamation point at the end of every interaction I had with Beat Saber. Despite the outside optics of spazz-dancing (who cares anyway), I felt cool.

Coming to Early Access in April to SteamVR-compatible headsets, Beat Saber will arrive with 10 songs, each with 5 levels of difficulty. Developer Ján IlavskĂ˝ told Road to VR that there’s a possibility of also releasing a level editor in the future that could allow you to place blocks and barriers yourself. Music, for now, is created by video game composer Jaroslav Beck, although IlavskĂ˝ was adamant that the studio was actively reaching out to other artists to fill out exclusive, purpose-built music for the game moving forward.

The Beat Saber website features the PlayStation VR logo, indicating future support, although Hyperbolic Magnetism hasn’t officially spoken about when PSVR support will arrive.

‘Catan VR’ Launches with Cross-play for Rift and Gear VR, Headed to Oculus Go

Kat VR Announces New ‘Mini’ Version of its VR Treadmill, Kickstarter Coming Soon

Kat VR, a China-based company known for their crowdfunded Kat Walk VR treadmill, are hitting Kickstarter again soon with a new design that promises to accommodate smaller spaces.

The company says their new Kat Walk Mini has “a much smaller footprint that can fit in any room whilst maintaining the open, non-restrictive design that allows for full range of movement for your arms and legs.”

Besides being smaller and lighter than the 2015-era Kat Walk, the new ‘mini’ design replaces the older wireless foot sensors with a laser sensor array set into the baseplate of the device, which is said to feature lower latency and provide more responsive input. Kat Walk Mini also features a redesigned guide bar system that pivots in place as you turn your body to face the desired direction. A “high strain shock-absorbing material” is used in the treadmill’s base, although we’re not sure how it differs from the original unit’s surface, or if that will require the user to user to don special low-friction shoes.

The original Kat Walk completed its first successful crowdfunding campaign nearly 3 years ago, garnering $150,000 from backers. The unit is a fairly large and heavy piece of kit though that, despite starting at an early bird price of $600, looked to appeal to mostly arcades and prosumers based on its fairly cumbersome size. Seeing a smaller, and decidedly more consumer-friendly version that incorporates some of the same freedom of movement is an interesting prospect to say the least.

“We decided to go back to our roots, to the same community that supported us initially, and that is why our next product will be launching on Kickstarter very soon. Since the product is still a prototype, we encourage the community’s involvement and feedback during the development process of KAT WALK mini,” the company told Road to VR

Kat VR is still staying tight-lipped on the specifics, as there’s still no official launch date or pricing structure yet for the Kat Walk Mini Kickstarter. We’re hoping for ‘soon’ and ‘not terribly expensive’.

AR-Enhanced ‘Warhammer’ Trading Card Game to Launch July 2018

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions is an upcoming physical and digital trading card game coming to iOS, Android, and PC in July. Announced at GDC 2018, the augmented reality experience uses PlayFusion’s proprietary ‘Enhanced Reality Engine’ to unlock gameplay options on the physical cards when using mobile devices.

Game studio PlayFusion, who are also a robotics and AI company, and makers of AR-enhanced trading card game Lightseekers (2017), are bringing their expertise in mixed-media and augmented reality to the Warhammer universe. Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions is described as “an all-new way for tabletop war gaming and for Trading Card Game fans to experience the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe.”

The mixed-media approach works in two ways: the physical trading card game, which is said to feature “hundreds of collectible cards” for strategic deck building, can be enhanced with AR, and the digital trading card game can be enhanced by importing the physical cards for use in the digital world. While we aren’t sure exactly what that entails, the announcement describes a “completely immersive augmented reality experience” to accompany the physical cards, and “unique physical-to-digital experiences” for playing the digital game online.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions represents the beginning of a new partnership between PlayFusion and Games Workshop, who plan to bring new expansions and card reveals “for many years to come.”

Pre-registration for Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions can be found on the game’s official website.

Magic Leap Shows Prototype Headset Progress Since 2014

GDC 2018: Magic Leap ‘Developing for Spatial Computing’ Session, Live Blog @ 4:00PM PT

Magic Leap is hosting a sponsored session today at GDC 2018 which promises a “deep dive” on developing for augmented reality. Having released their SDK earlier this week, we’re hoping to hear the company talk more specifically about what it’s like to develop for the Magic Leap One headset. Join us for a liveblog of the session right here at 4PM PT.

At 4PM PT (your timezone here), Magic Leap will present an hour long sponsored session titled The World is Your Playground: Deep Dive on Developing for Spatial Computing. The session pulls together the company’s chief content officer, Rio Caraeff, interaction director, Aleissia Laidacker, director of interaction lab, Brian Schwab, and creative director, Jeremy Vanhoozer, for a look at the creative possibilities of AR and spatial computing.

It’s significant that this is a GDC “sponsored session,” as it means Magic Leap paid for the opportunity to share the information with GDC attendees (as opposed to standard sessions which are unpaid and go through a selection process). There’s a chance this means they have a more specific goal in mind for the session beyond simply waxing about the possibilities of AR in general. Join us for the liveblog below (no need to refresh, updates will appear automatically) – things are due to kick off at 4PM PT.

GDC 2018 Liveblog: Magic Leap – The World is Your Playground: Deep Dive on Developing for Spatial Computing

Description

Join four well-known developers, now at Magic Leap, as they discuss how storytelling, art, interactions and more can be brought to life using spatial computing. Attendees will be introduced to the concept of spatial computing, where tech is able to detect and respond to the environment, creating a seamless blend of the real and the digital, offering new potential for game experiences. They will learn best practices from the developers and designers building the platform and defining the medium. And they will be encouraged to bring their existing knowledge and experience to take on the opportunities and challenges presented by the development of games on this next computing platform.

Takeaway

Attendees will be introduced to a new definition of mixed reality, where tech is able to detect and respond to the environment, creating a seamless blend of the real and the digital, providing unlimited potential for new game experiences. They will learn best practices and design techniques from the developers and designers that are building the platform and defining the medium. And they will be encouraged to bring their existing knowledge and experience to take on the opportunities and challenges presented by the development of games for mixed reality.

Watch: ILMxLab’s Star Wars Real-Time Ray-Tracing Demo on Unreal Engine is Stunning

At the Unreal Engine presentation at GDC 2018 today, Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri introduced several projects highlighting the scalability and performance of Unreal technology, including a partnership with ILMxLAB and Nvidia. This was the first live demonstration of interactive, real-time, ray-tracing with Unreal Engine.

Nvidia announced RTX on Monday, a real-time ray-tracing solution designed for their latest Volta GPU architecture. Today, we were treated to a live stage demo using Unreal Engine, Nvidia RTX, and ILMxLAB’s Star Wars assets. Aside from some slight connection problems (the image was being streamed from a PC to the iPad on stage), this was a stunning demonstration, and seemed to be far less noisy than the Northlight footage from Remedy.

Tony Tamasi, Senior Vice President of Content and Technology at Nvidia explained some of the technology behind the scenes, describing ray-tracing as “the holy grail” of rendering that solves many of the fundamental problems of traditional rasterization.

“We partnered with our friends at Microsoft to deliver an industry standard API called DirectX Raytracing,” he said. “That API is perfectly integrated with RTX to enable ray-tracing through interfaces and APIs that game developers are familiar with, and on top of that we’ve layered in some GameWorks technology to give developers a kickstart for things like de-noising and reconstruction filters.”

Despite the fact that this demo was running on a supercomputer (an Nvidia DGX Station running four Volta GPUs connected with NVLink), Tamasi thinks the technology is not too far away from reaching consumers. “We are at the crux of real-time ray-tracing being a practical reality right now, he said. “I expect you’re going to see games shipping with real-time ray-tracing this year.”

HTC and Gaming Giant IGT Partner on VR Tournament Platform for Casinos

HTC is expanding its out-of-home VR entertainment reach with a new deal with gaming giant IGT that will see its Vive hardware and software power a new competitive VR initiative where players compete for real money stakes.

The recent reveal (and subsequent pricing controversy) of HTC’s Vive Pro headset underlines the company’s commitment to the corporate market and by extension the out-of-home immersive entertainment sector. The company has been front and centre when it comes to key VR arcade-style developments in the East, one of the most notable being a partnership with Bandai Namco’s VR ZONE franchise. It also launched Viveport Arcade last year, a dedicated platform designed for the distribution of arcade focused VR software for operators of such venues.

HTC’s VR content division Vive Studios is today announcing another leg to this initiative with a new partnership with IGT (International Game Technology), a large multinational vendor of slot machines and gambling entertainment hardware, on IGTs new Virtual Zone (can we get some more originality in these names people?). The initiative will take the form of booths on casino floors, equipped with HTC Vive headsets and controllers running dedicated games designed specifically for competitive play and, more specifically, for each of the players to stake real world money on the outcome of any matches in the hope of winning “cash prizes in spirited VR tournaments”, according to a press release from HTC.

“Arcade-like installations and experiences are skyrocketing across the globe as VR has proven to be a consistent traffic generator in entertainment venues,” said Joel Breton, HTC VIVE VP Global Content. “By combining IGT’s gaming expertise and the world’s best VR in HTC VIVE, we are launching a combined platform that can deploy the best complete experiences for VR tournaments or stand-alone VR arcades. This is also a huge opportunity for more consumers to be exposed to amazing VR content.”

The first venue to open a Virtual Zone is Boyd Gaming’s The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and comprises two booths which look to be large enough for standing (rather than roomscale) VR experiences which are externally adorned with multiple spectator screens with views of each competitor’s gameplay as well as combined views of the action – quite a neat looking set up (see featured image above).

The underlying logic for the tournament platform is powered by a proprietary set of APIs which form IGT’s own SDK, which developers can use to build out experiences targeting competitive, monetised gaming for out-of-home venues. The first game to be adapted for the platform is Vive Studios’ own Arcade Saga.
