How to Tell if Your PC is Ready for Oculus Link

Oculus Link, the feature which turns Quest in a PC headset, is now available in beta. If you’re wondering whether or not your PC has the specs to handle it here’s a breakdown of the Oculus Link recommended specs and what you’ll need to use Quest to play Rift games on your PC.

Note: These specs are for the Oculus Link beta; Oculus says they will change before the full release. Notably, Oculus Link does not currently work on any AMD GPUs, but Oculus plans to add support for “as many of their cards as possible” in the future.

Oculus Link Recommended PC Specs

You’ll need a reasonably powerful PC to play Rift and Steam games on Quest via Oculus Link, though most modern ‘gaming’ PCs with NVIDIA graphics cards will fit the bill. Here’s what you’ll need for the Oculus Link beta.

Oculus Link CPU, RAM, USB, and Operating System Requirements
Oculus says over the course of the beta it plans to expand Oculus Link GPU support to more NVIDIA graphics cards and AMD cards as well.

Component Recommended Specs
Processor Intel i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater
Memory 8GB+ RAM
Operating System Windows 10
USB Ports 1x USB 3.0 ports

Oculus Link Cable Specs

Unfortunately the cable that comes in the box with Oculus Quest does not support Oculus Link. That means you’ll need a separate USB 3 cable.

Oculus says that any “high quality” USB 3 cable should work; unfortunately the quality of USB 3 cables can vary significantly and the capabilities of a specific cable are often not well defined. As such, the company recommends this cable [Amazon] for Oculus Link.

For the best experience, Oculus plans to release its own Oculus Link cable specifically for Quest later this year; it’ll be longer and have a right-angle connector on the headset end to make the cable a easier to manage. Oculus has shared the specs of its upcoming cable, which may help guide your research if looking for alternative Oculus Link cables:

  • Length: 5-Meter Headset Cable
  • Type: Full featured USB active optical cable. USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
  • Signal Requirements: USB 3.2 Gen 1 Signaling 5 Gbps USB 2
  • Infrared Signal Loss Tolerances: <500mV VBUS @ 3000mA; <250mV GND @ 3000mA
  • Power Supply: 3A
  • Bandwidth: 5 Gbps
  • Support for SuperSpeed USB ports
