VR Motion Platform ‘Feel Three’ Nearly Quadruples Kickstarter Goal as Campaign Comes to Close

Feel Three, a 3DOF motion simulator for VR, went live on Kickstarter late last month. And owing to its vision in providing a relatively cost-effective solution among a sea of expensive motion platforms, the company not only blasted past their £50,000 funding goal within only five hours of launch, but have finished out their campaign today with an astounding £181,440 (~$237,000 USD).

Update (September 28th, 2018): Feel Three finished out their Kickstarter today with a whopping 263% fulfillment over their original Kickstarter funding goal. Project creator Mark Towner had this to say to backers:

“It’s been a long 4 years to this point and it’s all for you guys. I promise try my damn est to not screw it up and become another failed VR project. No distractions. No first class travel…. just first class vision. Your trust is well placed. Prepare to have your world moved!”

The original article detailing the project follows below:

Original Article (August 29th, 2018): The simulator is built on a half-sphere base, which sits atop a number of motors and special omnidirectional wheels, called ‘omni wheels’, that give the user three degrees of freedom: pitch, roll and yaw. Because of its relatively inexpensive design—it doesn’t include costly linear actuators, which can set you back around £1,000 to £2,000 each—the Feel Three is touted as an affordable solution, starting at £2,000 (~$2,570) for Super Early Birds.

“You’re lifting the user up and down [with linear actuators], which is really expensive mechanically—it takes a lot of power. So by using just omni wheels and DC motors, we can move the user quite quickly. They sit at the center of gravity, they’re balanced. It’s just a simpler solution,” says project founder Mark Towner.

The platform also includes tactile transducers, which add vibration from the game in several places, giving you an extra hit of immersion by letting you feel engine revs, gunfire and other impacts. The system’s tactile transducers are placed by your feet, hands and back.

Because it’s a device intended for VR users, tracking is also an important aspect. According to the Kickstarter page, a tracker near the player’s head “constantly updates the orientation of the sphere and cancels the movement of the simulator from the players view.” This is where a pain point arrises however:

“We need to track the platform and uses these readings to cancel the movement in your headset. Many motion simulators have a small range of pitch and roll so the user can simply keep looking forward despite the movement and chance of discomfort. This then means their view will float around in the car as they drive, which is fine for some people, not ok for others.”

Since the platform’s range of movement is so dramatic, motion cancellation will have to be figured out before it’s a perfect fit. Some of the ways the company suggest conquering this challenge include: individual game support, native engine support through Unreal or Unity, an API wrapper (which could break after headset software updates), native support through OpenXR, or native support from headset manufacturers. The company is currently boasting over 100 compatible games, some of which are non-VR games that can be played via a virtual screen while in-headset.

Still, it’s clear this sort of motion platform will appeal to VR simulator enthusiasts looking to fly in Elite Dangerous (2014) or drive in Project Cars 2 (2017), so Feel Three also includes a removable armrest plate so you can swap out and safely bolt down controllers. The final package is said to include armrest plates with pre-drilled holes for “the most popular controllers,” although the company will also provide a chart for other controllers so you can DIY your own setup.

As for steering wheels and center-mounted flight yokes, those can can be attached to what the creators call “a lightweight optional shelf which is attached to both armrests and can be rotated forward to let the user enter the cockpit.”

The company is providing their own software suite to control Feel Three, allowing users to adjust the speed and intensity of each game, as well as set limits on their physical rotation.

As a lower-tier item for £400 (~$515), backers can also choose the simulator’s static cockpit piece, which includes a chair mount, armrests, pedal shelf, and four 60W tactile transducers.

Haptic Vest ‘Ryg’ Launches on Kickstarter, Fully Funded in 3 Hours

Woojer, the company behind the haptic belt Strap, launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this week for a new haptic vest, dubbed Ryg. Initially targeting a $50,000 funding goal, the campaign has seen overwhelming support so far, not only claiming successful funding in the first three hours, but also nearly tripling the original ask within three days of launching the campaign.

Using Woojer’s patented oscillating frame actuators, called Osci, the company says Ryg is three times more powerful than their earlier haptic products, which include the haptic belt Strap, and a Kickstarter funded haptic unit using the same technology.

Wading past some of the hypetastic bro-speak that permeates the Kickstarter itself, it appears Ryg, presumably like its forebears, can turn in-game sounds into body shaking haptics out-of-the-box, sort of like a ‘buttkicker’ for your entire torso. Unlike the single-actuator units that came before it however, the vest itself packs in eight actuators that are said to provide “silent, harmonic and powerful tactile sensations.” Developers can tune the vest’s actuators with both Unity and Unreal SDKs for greater immersion in VR, as the vest can hypothetically simulate things like gunshots and raindrops, so not only sound-based haptis.

Connecting via Bluetooth, Ryg is said to last up to eight hours of playtime on a single charge, although it can draw current from additional battery packs for longer play sessions. An optional mounting bracket will also allow backpack-style PCs to integrate with the vest, something that location-based facilities tend to use in larger warehouse-scale VR environments.

Early backers of the Kickstarter campaign can receive a Ryg starting at $550, something the company says is around ~35% off the suggested retail price. Ryg is slated to arrive at some Kickstarter backers’ doors as early as November 2018, although the glut of backers will receive their units a month later.

You can check out the Kickstarter campaign here.

‘Moss’ is Coming to Oculus Quest at Launch

There isn’t a list of launch titles for Oculus Quest yet, the company’s newly announced $400 high-end standalone VR headset. Polyarc, the minds behind Moss (2017), say that the super endearing platformer adventure is indeed going to be among the 50+ launch titles coming to Quest on day one.

Already available on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows VR, Moss will be cramming itself into mobile VR hardware for the first time—no small feat that will hopefully retain the incredible graphics that we came to love on higher-resolution headsets such as Rift and Vive. After all, Quest is said to feature a 1,600 × 1,440 per eye OLED, which is not only the same resolution of HTC Vive Pro, but we think it actually looks pretty great on Quest.

A particularly important piece of the puzzle is undoubtedly Oculus Quest’s ‘Touch’ controllers, which just like with Rift will allow you to physically interact with the little pint-sized hero Quill and move the puzzle-like platforms to help her along the way to save her missing uncle.

Oculus Quest is said to launch sometime in Spring 2019, so the team still has some time to tighten down on those textures, reduce polygons, and stuff the wide, beautiful world of Moss to fit Quest’s on-board Snapdragon 835 chipset.

Check out our spoiler-free review of Moss here for more information.

While the list of Quest launch titles is still pretty uncertain—Oculus says Rift titles Robo Recall, The Climb, and Dead and Buried are all coming to the headset—it’s not clear if these are launch titles or not. Either way you slice it, some of the best Rift titles making it to Quest will certainly makes it easy for newcomers looking for solid content on the Rift-like mobile headset.

Facebook & RED Unveil ‘Manifold’ Volumetric VR Camera

Last May, Facebook and RED Digital Cinema announced they were working on a volumetric video camera based on Facebook’s Surround360 technology. At Oculus Connect 5 today, the company’s annual developer conference, Facebook and RED revealed a first-look at the camera, dubbed Manifold.

Manifold, Facebook says in a blogpost, captures multiple camera angles simultaneously from within a given volume, enabling what is says are “infinite perspectives to be generated from any direction within a field of view.” In short, it captures scenes volumetrically and preserves depth information for a more immersive view from within a VR headset.

Facebook’s depth estimation technology captures 3D information from the recorded scene such as characters, props, and backgrounds, and then lets you experience it in a positionally tracked headset, such as Rift or the upcoming Quest standalone headset.

While no pricing or launch date is available currently, it’s very likely aiming for the professional market—meaning big bucks, although you’d expect that for a new class of device that’s attempting to allow for users to finally watch 3D 360 video with positional tracking intact. Typically 360 video doesn’t provide depth information, even when it’s presented with a stereoscopic view, so this could deliver a new class of immersive VR video worth the wait.

“RED and Facebook worked closely to build this first studio-ready camera system for immersive 6DoF storytelling, aiming to connect creative professionals with audiences in a bold new way,” the companies say in a press statement. “We’ve made significant strides in realizing this new storytelling device—with plenty more work on the horizon—and today were excited to share the camera’s hardware design and tech specs as we continue on the road to commercial availability.”

The companies have also revealed some hardware specs, which are listed below:

SENSORS

  • 16 RED(R) Helium 8K(R) Sensors arranged to allow full 360 6DoF capture
  • Record raw from 16 cameras running 8k @60 fps simultaneously

OPTICS

  • Custom Schneider 8mm, F4.0, 180 degree fish eye lenses

I/O CONNECTIONS

  • Single SMPTE 304M cable for power, control and data
Camera Control Unit and storage device may be up to 100 meters from Camera Head
  • 5, 12g SDI outputs for monitoring or third party stitch processing
  • Multiple third party storage device choices providing 1 hour or more record time

ACCESSORIES

  • Front of lens ND filters available
  • Quick release handles for maneuvering and setup

UI/UX

  • Web app based control interface for flexibility of user interface device choice
  • SDK provided for post processing

Oculus Quest Supports “Arena-scale” Tracking and Multi-room Guardian

Oculus today offered up some details on the ‘Insight’ tracking system of their new Quest headset. The inside-out tracking goes “beyond roomscale,” according to Oculus, enabling large-scale experiences that let players physically move around large spaces. Additionally, Oculus Quest is equipped with the familiar Guardian system to keep you from bumping into your surroundings, now upgraded to support multiple rooms.

Oculus Quest uses four wide-angle cameras to not only track the Touch controllers, but also to track the environment around the user in order to understand where the headset is located in space.

This ‘inside-out’ tracking, which Oculus calls ‘Insight’, means that users don’t need to rely on external sensors or trackers, freeing them to move around large scale spaces rather than being constrained to a room-scale tracking volume. As such, Oculus says that the headset can support “arena-scale” tracking.

At Oculus Connect the company is showing a multiplayer VR FPS arena for Dead and Buried that occupies several thousand square feet, allowing players to have a VR laser tag-like experience where they are physically moving around a large space with real objects for cover, all while battling in VR. In this early stage, it sounds like this kind of large-scale tracked experience is still experimental, but something the company is hoping to expand going upon forward.

Oculus Announces Quest, The High-end Standalone Headset Starting at $400

For consumers in their home, Oculus says that Quest will support a multi-room Guardian system. Oculus Rift users will be familiar with Guardian, which allows them to trace an outline of their physical space in order to set a safe boundary for their movements in virtual reality. When approaching the edge of the boundary, the Guardian system shows itself as a virtual wall that looks like a blue grid, preventing you from running into a wall or punching your computer monitor (usually).

Since Oculus Quest offers ostensibly unconstrained movement via inside-out tracking, Oculus has announced a multi-room Guardian system. The company says that this will allow users to set up Guardian spaces in multiple rooms, and Quest will remember those setups and automatically identify which room the user is in to show them the right Guardian boundary.

It remains to be seen how well this will work, as it’s surely challenging to reliably identify rooms in various lighting conditions and when objects could move from one session to the next. We’ll be going hands-on with Quest soon to bring you more details on how it all works.

New VR ‘Star Wars’ Series Slated to Launch on Oculus Quest Next Year

Google’s ‘YouTube VR’ App is Coming to Oculus Go Soon

Oculus and Google are finally bringing the official YouTube VR app to the Oculus Store for Oculus Go soon. Announced previously for Gear VR back at Google’s developer conference, the YouTube VR app has only been available for a select few flagship Samsung phones.

Update (September 26th, 2018): Today at Oculus Connect 5, the company announced that the YouTube VR app is finally coming to Oculus Go. There’s no specific launch date, however the company says it will be “soon”. The app was previously only supported on a few Gear VR-compatible phones. The original article follows below:

Original Article (July 26th, 2018): Gear VR owners have been waiting for an official YouTube VR app since the headset officially launched in late 2015. Previously, users would need to navigate to YouTube via VR web browsers such as Samsung Internet or Oculus Internet, which admittedly wasn’t to best way to view the video platform’s variety of content, which spans 360 degree, VR180, and standard formats.

Another recent development in the world of YouTube VR is the app’s new social viewing mode, dubbed ‘Watch Together’. Google says in a blog post that the new feature will let you “watch and discuss videos with others in a communal, virtual space,” although we have little to go on in terms of how that’s handled outside of this short gif below which shows thumbnail versions of avatars while viewing a 360 video. The company says it will be available on Daydream View and Gear VR.

The company also proclaims that YouTube VR now supports Samsung Gear VR, Daydream View, HTC Vive, and PSVR. That’s not really the whole story though.

Despite the fact that Gear VR is ‘powered’ by Oculus, and hooks into the Oculus Store for content, noticeably missing from the list of supported devices is any mention Oculus Go or Oculus Rift, the latter of which is actually supported via the YouTube VR app on Steam; it would be nigh impossible to create a HTC Vive exclusive when publishing through Steam using Valve’s OpenVR API and added benefit for user-created custom keybindings for SteamVR-compatible controllers.

While the Gear VR app isn’t out yet, it could be possible that Oculus Go will see de facto support too, but Google just doesn’t want the headlines to skew that way right now. Oculus themselves tell developers that “most Gear VR apps will run unmodified on Oculus Go,” so it may be when the app launches that Go users can get a crack at it too, although this is pure speculation.

– – — – –

We’ll be keeping our eyes out when the Gear VR app launches later this week, and updating this piece when more information arrives.

‘Robo Recall’, ‘The Climb’, ‘Moss’, and More Coming to Oculus Quest

Oculus today announced ‘Quest’, their new high-end standalone VR headset. The company is promising that some of the top Rift titles will be ported to the headset, including Robo Recall, Moss, The Climb, and Dead and Buried.

On stage today at Oculus Connect 5, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Oculus is focusing on creating a self-sustaining ecosystem so that VR developers can thrive on their platform. Part of achieving that, Zuckerberg said, is making sure that the company’s various efforts across mobile and PC VR are working toward that common goal.

Toward that end, Zuckerberg said that the new Oculus Quest headset will run some of Rift’s current top titles. On stage he mentioned Robo RecallMoss, The Climb, Dead and Buried, ‘and more’.

He also announced that there are some 50 launch titles planned for the Oculus Quest launch which is set for Spring.

It’s surprising to hear that games like Robo Recall and The Climb will be coming to Santa Cruz, given that they are graphically intense games built on engines that usually power high-end PC titles. It’s very likely that the graphics will have to be toned down for these titles to run on Quest, given its mobile graphics processor, but it’s still great to know that the investments put into these high-end titles will be able to be enjoyed by mobile VR players too.

‘Lone Echo 2’ Announced with Immersive Trailer Available on Rift, Go, & Gear VR

Oculus today announced Lone Echo 2, a sequel to the highly praised Lone Echo which was developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Oculus Studios in 2017. While the game, like the original, is expected only to launch on the Rift, the announcement comes with an immersive trailer available on the Rift, Go, and Gear VR.

Now a little more than a year after the launch of Lone Echo, Oculus today confirmed that Lone Echo 2 is finally on its way. An immersive trailer introducing the game is available on the Rift, Go, and Gear VR headsets. You can find it here.

Lone Echo, which launched back in 2017, put players in the metallic body of Jack, a helpful android companion to Liv, the sole human heading a mining operation positioned in the rings of Saturn. The game saw the two go on a daring adventure which, at the end, left them in an unexpected place.

SEE ALSO
Ready at Dawn CEO on 'Echo Combat', Growing the 'Echo' Universe, & the Studio's Commitment to VR

Lone Echo received high marks for its immersion and narrative, and is often regarded as one of VR’s top titles to date; we gave it a 9 out of 10 in our review. The game is unique for its high production values while steering completely away from first person shooter action, instead focusing on threats and conflict introduced by the environment rather than generic baddies or humanoid aliens dispatched with hot lead or lasers.

Granted, developer Ready at Dawn has been working hard on Echo Combat, a multiplayer FPS component to Echo VR—the multiplayer spinoff that’s set in the Lone Echo universe. Given what the team has learned about mixing handheld weapons with the games’ unique zero-G locomotion may mean that armed conflict isn’t entirely out of the question for Lone Echo 2, for better or for worse.

Mech Simulator ‘Vox Machinae’ Available Now After Surprise Launch at Oculus Connect

Vox Machinae, a long running indie VR project, is available right now on the Oculus Rift, SteamVR, and PC. The game received a surprise launch into Early Access today at Oculus Connect 5, bringing a new beginning to a title that’s been in the works for nearly four years.

Available now on Oculus (Rift), SteamVR (Vive, Rift, and Windows VR), and PC (non-VR mode), priced at $25, Vox Machinae is a multiplayer mech combat game that leans decidedly toward the ‘simulator’ end of the mech spectrum, contrasting faster-paced and more arcade-like mech games like Archangel: Hellfire (2017).

The game supports multiplayer matches with up to 16 players, including bot support, mid-match joining, and full crossplay between Oculus, SteamVR, and non-VR PC players.

Oculus Announces Quest, The High-end Standalone Headset Starting at $400

Oculus today introduced Quest, the consumer version of the ‘Project Santa Cruz’ headset that the company first revealed way back in 2016. The headset is high-end standalone, meaning it doesn’t rely on a PC, but still manages to include the positional head and hand tracking that makes high-end headsets so immersive.

First introduced back in 2016 as Project Santa Cruz, the Quest brings full head and hand tracking to world of standalone headsets, something not yet available in similar offerings like the Lenovo Mirage Solo or Vive Focus (which both offer positional head tracking but not positional hand tracking).

Revealed today by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Quest took a premier spot in today’s Oculus Connect keynote.

To boot, the headset and Touch controller combo is said to start at $400 for the 64 GB models, and launch in Spring 2019.

The Quest is said to include “the same best-of-class optics as Oculus Go with a display resolution of 1600×1440 per eye, while incorporating a lens spacing adjustment to help maximize visual comfort.” Built-in audio, similar to Oculus Go’s, will also be included, although it’s said to include “deeper bass.”

Valve Reveals Knuckles EV3 Dev Kit, Planning Production of “Much greater quantities”

New Video Reveals More Giant Bosses of ‘Astro Bot Rescue Mission‘

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is nearing release on PSVR next month, and to help charge up the Astro Bot hypetrain, Sony Japan Studio released a new video detailing some of the absolutely huge bosses that you and little Astro will take on.

Developed exclusively for PSVR, Astro Bot Rescue Mission sees a reprisal of the little bots that were first introduced in The Playroom (2013) and later in The Playroom VR (2016). This time though, you and your little robot pal Astro will have to battle a host of big level bosses, which you meet after each platforming mission.

“These bosses are huge and create an amazing sense of scale in VR. Defeating them will not be a small affair though and your platforming and gadget skills will be put at use,” says Nicolas Doucet Creative Director in a Sony blogpost. “Every one of them features a unique finale with a special mention for the final boss. And you’ll have to play to find out!”

While the game was designed from the ground-up for VR, it makes use of the DualShock 4 controller, which in our hands-on at E3 earlier this summer turned out to be a delight to use.

Doucet told us at E3 that Astro Bot Rescue Mission should provide between 8-10 hours of gameplay, which is played out over a total of five worlds, with four levels per world and 26 ‘extra challenges’.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is slated to release exclusively on PSVR on October 2nd.

‘Sairento VR’ Update Brings Remastered Graphics & Smoother Gameplay, New Levels Incoming

Sairento VR (2018), the cyber-ninja VR combat game, just received an update that includes remastered graphics and better performance thanks to a game engine upgrade.

Sairento VR launched out of Early Access for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in February 2018. The game includes a single-player campaign mode that lets you hone your slow-motion, high-flying ninja moves as you shoot pistols and physically slice your katanas at the game’s ‘cyber ninja’ enemies; the game also includes a single-player arcade mode, multiplayer co-op, and PvP mode.

Thanks to a recent update, the following levels have been visually remastered: Shrine, Lab, Warehouse, Cemetary, Hall, Corporation, Train, Arena, and Observatory. The developers, Mixed Realms, are still working on three remaining levels including Street, Alley and District, and will release patches for these in a future update.

An upgrade to the game’s Unity game engine, Mixed Realms says in a Steam news post, improves textures and lighting, offers better performance and smoother gameplay, and fixes a number of bugs. You can find the full change log in the link posted above.

Mixed Realms also maintains that Sairento VR is slated to receive a new level at the end of September, and another one at the end of October.

Check out the video below for a look at some of the game’s latest improvements.

VR Stealth Game ‘Espire 1’ Coming to Vive & Rift in 2019, Teaser Trailer Here

‘Accounting+’ Coming Soon to HTC Vive & Oculus Rift with New Levels

Squanch Games, the game studio founded by Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland, and Crows Crows Crows are bringing Accounting+ (2017) to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift soon. Launched first on PSVR back in late 2017, the game is also getting a big content update that will be available on all supported platforms.

In short, Accounting+ is madness incarnate, featuring the sort of offbeat characters you’d expect to leak out of the Justin Roiland’s addled brain. You’re coerced into joining a gang, stabbing and killing “The King of VR”, and many other wacky experiences that make you question what you’re doing with your life.

First released as a free game on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, dubbed simply Accounting (2016), the deliciously bizarre fever dream of a game expanded with a few news levels, launching as Accounting+ exclusively on PSVR.

Accounting+ includes a host of crazy characters voiced by Justin Roiland, Reggie Watts, Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh), Cassie Steele (Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Arin Hanson (Game Grumps) to name a few.

After a recent content update, which included a new water park level, the developers said Accounting+ has grown to double the size of the original Accounting. The next update is said to triple the size of the game, with at least a space level coming in tow.

The studios haven’t released word on exactly when Accounting+ will launch, although they say “very soon.” In the meantime, you can follow along by adding it your Steam wishlist.

Walmart to Launch Nation-wide VR Training Program with Over 17,000 Oculus Headsets

Walmart is set to expand its fledgling VR training program in a big way soon; the big box store is going to start a country-wide training program promising to bring over 17,000 Oculus Go headsets to its employees by the year’s end.

The company is sending four headsets to every Walmart Supercenter, and two to every Neighborhood Market and Discount Store. Walmart says in a blogpost that “every associate – including those on the floor who interact with customers the most – will have access to the same training that their managers and department managers do at the Academies.”

Oculus Go is Oculus’ recently released $200 standalone VR headset. Because it doesn’t require a smartphone or other computing device to run, it’s decidedly a good fit for a massive VR training program like Walmart’s.

A pilot test conducted this summer saw 10 stores outfitted with a VR training program on how to operate Walmart Pickup Towers, the company’s latest innovation that lets you pick up your online orders directly from the store through a vending machine-style kiosk.

To boot, Walmart has already developed more than 45 activity-based learning modules using software provided by STRIVR, the same company that creates VR training software for the NBA, NFL and NHL. The company plans to use the Oculus Go headsets to train employees in three main areas: new technology, “soft skills” like empathy and customer service, and compliance.

Walmart Focuses On Future of VR/AR at New Silicon Valley Tech Incubator

“We are entering a new era of learning, and Walmart continues to lead the way,” said Derek Belch, CEO of STRIVR, which worked with Walmart on its initial launch of VR in Academies last year. “The power of VR is real, and when offered as a cornerstone of learning and development, it can truly transform the way an organization trains its people.”

The program is said to kick off next month, and presumably will become a part of both new employee training and cross-training of existing employees in new tech such as the company’s Pickup Towers.

“The great thing about VR is its ability to make learning experiential,” said Andy Trainor, Walmart’s senior director of Walmart U.S. Academies. “When you watch a module through the headset, your brain feels like you actually experienced a situation. We’ve also seen that VR training boosts confidence and retention while improving test scores 10 to 15 percent – even those associates who simply watched others experience the training saw the same retention boosts.”

Zen-like Adventure ‘Arca’s Path’ to Launch December 4th on All Major VR Platforms

Arca’s Path is a controller-free VR adventure that takes you into a mysterious world, and tasks you with solving puzzles by leading a ball through obstacles using your gaze. The game, produced by Rebellion and developed by Dream Reality Interactive, is slated to launch on December 4th on all major VR platforms.

Arca’s Path follows the story of a young girl who finds a VR video game in a trash heap. While the gameplay itself is based entirely around leading the ball with the game’s gaze-based mechanic, there’s also some story here as well, told through manga-style stills that are dispensed as you make your way through the crumbling road ahead.

The game, launching globally on December 4th, is supporting a wide array of VR platforms including PSVR, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, Gear VR, and Windows VR headsets.

Rebellion is best known in the VR industry for its adaptation of Battlezone (2016), among numerous other PC and console titles including the Sniper Elite series and Rogue Trooper Redux (2018).

Developers Dream Reality Interactive previously worked on VR experience Hold the World (2017) starring iconic broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, and Orbu, an AR game for iOS using Apple’s ARKit. Dream Reality Interactive’s core team previously worked at Sony’s London Studio, with titles such as PlayStation VR Worlds and AR games for Wonderbook.

Haptic Suit Company Hardlight VR Closes Due to Lack of Funding

‘CREED: Rise to Glory’ to Include PvP Multiplayer at Launch Next Week

CREED: Rise to Glory, the upcoming arcade boxing game from VR studio Survios, is getting a PvP mode that will let you duke it out with other players in online matches. It was previously thought that the game would only feature single-player modes such as the game’s campaign, where you battle against NPC contenders on your quest to become light heavyweight champion of the world.

Revealed on the PlayStation blog, the online multiplayer mode will arrive at launch, at least on PSVR when the game arrives on September 25th. Creed will support PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.

We’ve reached out to Survios to confirm that both Steam and Oculus Store versions will also have PvP, and will update this piece as soon as we learn more.

Creed: Rise to Glory puts you in the shoes of the Adonis Creed, the main protagonist played by Michael B. Jordan in both Creed (2015) and the upcoming sequel Creed II, which is slated to release on November 21st. We went hands-on with Creed: Rise to Glory at GDC earlier this year, and its core boxing mechanic seemed really promising.

Featuring a combat scheme Survios calls ‘Phantom Melee Technology’, Creed uses a sort of body desynchronization when either your stamina is low, or when you’re staggered from a powerful punch. This essentially makes it so you don’t throw punches willy-nilly and really narrows your focus so you fight tactically.

Creed: Rise to Glory is also said to arrive at “more than 500 VR arcades” starting on September 25th, although no comprehensive list of participating locations is available at this time.

Developing studio Survios is best known for their VR titles Raw Data (2017) and Sprint Vector (2018), and have recently released VR music tool Electronauts (2018).

Weta Workshop Job Posting Suggests ‘Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders’ Will Be Multiplayer

Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders is an upcoming shooter for Magic Leap One, and while not much is really known about Weta’s AR game, a recent job posting searching for a Networking Programmer at Weta Workshop could mean the company is pushing to make it a multiplayer experience.

The posting lists a few responsibilities that have piqued our interest, namely the job of designing real-time multiplayer architecture for the game, developing the networking layer for a shared multiplayer AR experience, and working with game and level designers to conceptualize and create adaptive and scalable game-level network features. In short, it appears the Magic Leap One shooter is going to be a multiplayer game.

You can check out the full job posting here.

Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders was first teased back in 2015 in a Magic Leap concept video produced by Weta Workshop, Peter Jackson’s New Zealand-based conceptual design and effects studio. Dr. Grordbort is an original IP developed by Weta Workshop’s Greg Broadmore in 2009 that tells the story of an anachronistic colonialist named Cockswain who is armed to the teeth with retro-futurist ray guns as he conquers the galaxy.

Recently Magic Leap and Weta Workshop together founded a 50-person gaming-focused team dubbed Weta Gameshop, which is comprised of half Weta and half Magic Leap staff set in a warehouse at Weta’s site in Miramar, New Zealand.

Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders is said to feature the voices of Stephen Fry and Rhys Darby, and be chocked full of robots that you have to fend off from all directions with a host of weapons including a grappling gun, and laser pistols dubbed the ‘Saboteur 66’ and the ‘Wave Blaster 6000’.

It’s possible if Weta and Magic Leap are only now looking to include multiplayer as a core feature of the game, that it may be a ways off in terms of launch. The posting however maintains that launch will be sometime this year.

We’re hoping to learn more at Magic Leap’s L.E.A.P. developer conference next month.

Elon Musk Wants to Livestream SpaceX Moon Mission in “high def VR”

SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and space transport company founded by tech billionaire Elon Musk, ultimately has its sights set on colonizing Mars, although the company’s next big step on the way there is taking tourists to the moon. And you might be able to go too, provided you have a VR headset in the next five years.

Musk tweeted yesterday that the company would be livestreaming the upcoming moon mission in “high def VR,” which he says will be transmitted in near real-time, of course accounting for the ~238,000 miles the signal will need to travel to reach Earth.

While the tech billionaire is famously tight-lipped about the specifics of his future projects such as Neuralink, the company working on an implantable brain-computer interface dubbed a neural-lace, Musk revealed in an interview with podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan that the moon mission will cost $5 billion, and is slated to launch as early as 2023.

Musk says video streaming from the moon to Earth will be handled by Starlink, a constellation of satellites currently in development by SpaceX that will be used to service both Earth and extraterrestrial communications. Musk expects the moon’s Starlink cluster to be active by launch, which will ensure full signal coverage.

Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese fashion mogul, is the first passenger slated to make the moon trip on the company’s Big Falcon Rocket, which will also presumably carry the VR video capture device—whatever that will be five years from now (we’re certainly hoping for more than monoscopic 360 video).

SpaceX has carried out similar project to engage us Earth-bound folk, such as livestreaming the view from Musk’s personal Tesla Roadster, which was shot into space aboard the Falcon Heavy rocket bound for Mars’ orbit. While some may criticize the move as blatant marketing stunt, reigniting the general public’s fascination with space travel is an important step to the company’s future colonization efforts.

‘Slime Rancher’ to Get VR Version This Fall in Free DLC

The critically-acclaimed game Slime Rancher (2017), a PC and console title that lets you run your own ranch filled with plucky slime buddies, is getting a VR version this fall that will allow you to vac, feed, and play with slimes.

Developed by Monomi Park and VR studio 3lb GamesSlime Rancher: VR Playground is said to include unique VR playgrounds based off of popular locations in the ‘Far, Far Range’, letting you meet a number of slimes such as pink, tabby, and phosphor.

The studios say however the upcoming DLC “does not include the full expanses of the Far, Far Range.” VR-accessible playgrounds available in the DLC will include the Dry Reef, Moss Blanket, and Ancient Ruins.

There’s still no word on exactly which headsets the DLC will be targeting, although we expect to see support the standard SteamVR-compatible headsets including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and possibly Windows VR headsets. The base game also supports PS4, although it’s uncertain at this point if PSVR owners will see the free DLC as well.

You can keep an eye on Slime Rancher: VR Playgrounds by adding it to your Steam wishlist here.
