Volkswagen Group to Train 10,000 Employees in VR in 2018
Volkswagen Group and VR studio Innoactive revealed the global, multi-brand automotive company is planning to train 10,000 employees this year alone using virtual reality.
Volkswagen Group first deployed its Volkswagen Digital Reality Hub Group last year, a VR platform designed to help the company’s employees collaborate across the Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen brands. Now, the company says they’re going a little deeper down the virtual rabbit hole in its new initiative to train 10,000 employees in production and logistics using more than 30 VR training simulations created in partnership with Innoactive.
The company showed off one such example of a VR training simulation at MWC 2018 which places the user in an industrial workspace using an HTC Vive Pro. The simulation was built using the Innoactive Hub SDK and optimized for Vive Pro.
Volkswagen Group says it’s “empower[ing] employees to use VR to transfer knowledge and improve workflows by making VR headsets available for order throughout the Group.”
In addition, Innoactive announced a new VR/AR enterprise software called Innoactive Workspaces at MWC 2018, a VR solution allowing users to plan, simulate and train in industrial workspaces. Innoactive Workspaces is slated to release later this year.

Varjo Announces AR Pass-through Capability for Its Headset
Varjo, the Finland-based headset manufacturer, today announced the company’s upcoming high resolution VR headset will have AR pass-through capabilities powered by Socionext image signal processors.
Varjo’s headset is basically taking what some consider a shortcut to retina resolution with its ‘bionic display’ – a technique that combines a high resolution microdisplay with a standard VR display to achieve higher detail. Now, on top of the previously mentioned promise of an adaptive microdisplays and eye-tracking (neither were on show at MWC), Varjo is adding AR pass-through to its list of upcoming features.
While the company hasn’t put forth any usecases for its newly announced AR capabilities, or whether the AR function will be offered as an integrated solution or an external add-on, it’s possible Varjo is going for a similar experience to that provided by ZED Mini, a stereo depth-mapping camera which fits on a mount made to attach to VR headsets like the Rift and Vive. When attached, the camera provides stereo pass-through video and real-time depth and environment mapping, turning the headsets into dev kits emulating the capabilities of high-end AR headsets.
Varjo says they selected Socionext’s Milbeaut image signal processor technology because of how complex the level of camera processing is for both pass-through and AR.
Urho Konttori, Founder and CEO of Varjo, comments: “In Socionext, we have found a strong and reliable technology partner for state-of-the-art imaging solutions. With the Socionext Milbeaut technology, Varjo has built a unique way of combining the real and digital worlds in an unprecedented level of realism, quality and latency.”
Mitsugu Naito, Corporate Senior Vice President and head of Imaging Solution Business Unit at Socionext Inc. comments: “Socionext will continue to fully support Varjo’s requirements whilst customizing Milbeaut to their specific needs. We are very pleased to announce both our collaboration and the design win for Milbeaut as part of their new incredible upgrade to the mixed reality experience.”

‘Planet of the Apes VR’ to Put You at the Heart of the Ape Revolution, Launching April 3rd on PSVR, Rift & Vive
20th Century Fox’s VR game division FoxNext VR Studio today announced that their Planet of the Apes-themed game for PSVR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift is coming in April. Called Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR, the first-person action-adventure game takes place between the events in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), where you play as an intelligent ape imprisoned in a heavily guarded scientific facility.
Produced in partnership with Imaginati Studios, the game takes place during the throws of the deadly strain of Simian Flu which has decimated the human population. You, an ape with human-level intelligence, are tasked with escaping the testing facility by banding together with your fellow primate test subjects, and returning to Caesar, the series’ intelligent chimpanzee leader. Yes, you’re an ape with an M-16 and a grudge.
Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR is slated to arrive on all supported VR platforms on April 3rd for $15.
“The Apes franchise supplies the perfect opportunity for players to become part of an apocalyptic world from the perspective of a different species for the first time ever,” Martin Alltimes, CEO, Imaginati Studios. “We wanted to balance visceral combat with a plot-driven narrative that leaves you questioning your innate allegiance to humanity.”
FoxNext had a hand in several VR experiences including Alien Covenant: In Utero VR Experience (2017) and a 360 behind-the-scenes look at the making of Isle of Dogs (2018) film made with Felix & Paul Studios, but Planet of the Apes VR is FoxNext’s first VR game as such. The studio’s second VR game based on the Alien franchise is also currently in production.

‘Hatsune Miku VR’ Rhythm Game for Rift & Vive to Launch March 9th, Teaser Trailer Here
Hatsune Miku, the impossibly saccharine anime pop vocaloid, is coming to SteamVR headsets in a new rhythm game from creators Degica Games and Crypton Future Media.
Update (02/27/18): The Steam link is live, and launch date is confirmed for March 9th, 2018. Check out Hatsune Miku VR here on Steam.
Original article (01/19/18): First reported by Gematsu, Hatsune Miku VR will be landing on SteamVR headsets in spring 2018. Developers Degica Games say in the promo announcing the game that it will feature songs by “various famous Hatsune Miku artists.”
Degica spells out the list of upcoming features:
- Rhythm action game using VR controllers
- Enjoy Miku’s original dance while playing the game
- Eight songs with two difficulties for intense dance action (more songs to be added later)
- Support for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift
- Game available in English, Japanese, and Chinese
This isn’t the Japanese CG starlet’s first foray into VR. Crypton Future Media, the inventors/rights holders, have licensed Hatsune Miku’s likeness to a number of VR ‘concerts’ across including PSVR (Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live), and both Gear VR and Daydream via the VR Cruise app (Gear VR version, Daydream version).
Since there’s only eight songs to choose from, we don’t expect this to be high on the list of ‘must plays’, but if you’re a Hatsune Miku superfan, you might want to keep this link handy to check for when the game finally arrives on Steam. You can also sign up for future updates through Degica’s website.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Will Support 2017 Gear VR, No 2018 Model Announced
Samsung officially launched its new S9 and S9 Plus smartphones today. Though Gear VR wasn’t mentioned during the reveal, the company has confirmed to Road to VR that both the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will support the 2017 Gear VR, however a new model for the launch of the phones was not announced.
Samsung launched its first Gear VR headset way back in 2014, compatible with the Note 4. Since then, the company has continuously refreshed the headset to fit newer phones, now with six different Gear VR models.
Today in Barcelona, ahead of MWC 2018, the company revealed their new Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus phones. During the announcing, the company focused heavily on the smartphone’s camera, pointing out a new super slow-mo feature, dual aperture, and some light augmented reality such as being able to translate printed words through the camera in real-time. The phones are due to be available on March 16th.
Virtual reality went nearly unmentioned during the reveal, but following the keynote, Samsung representatives confirmed to Road to VR that the new phones would support the latest 2017 Gear VR headset. However, a 2018 model won’t be launched alongside the S9 and S9 Plus.
That’s not surprising, considering the new phones are very similar in size to last year’s S8 phones, and the 2017 Gear VR already includes a USB-C adapter, meaning it can plug into the S9 phones with no problem.
If Samsung plans to release an updated version of Gear VR for 2018, we’d expect it to come later in the year, likely during the reveal of the Note 9.
Samsung has also previously hinted at work on its own standalone headset, which would come with everything built in rather than rely on a docked smartphone. As with other company’s now launched standalone VR headsets, Samsung may be shifting its focus in that direction.

Update: HTC Confirms It’s Merging VR and Smartphone Divisions
Chialin Chang, HTC’s President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, made his immediate resignation official last week, which HTC now confirms has prompted the company to merge its smartphone and VR divisions—a move that possibly points to the HTC putting greater focus on VR in the face of the company’s waning smartphone business.
Update (02/24/18): The Verge has confirmed with HTC that it will undergo management reorganization.
“We have recently brought our smartphone and VR businesses under common leadership in each region. Today, we announced a restructure in North America for the HTC smartphone business that will centralize the reporting structure within the region,” HTC told The Verge. “In doing so, there have been some employee reductions to align the businesses and empower the teams to share more resources.”
The report contends that layoffs are hitting US-based staff, allegedly counting between “a few dozen to around 100 people.”
The original article follows below.
Original article (02/14/18): HTC told Engadget that Chang stepped down from his 6-year stint at the company to pursue his “personal career plan,” exactly what that entails, we’re not sure at this time.
According to a report by China-based tech publication YiVian, five general managers, most of whom oversaw VR divisions in the company, will be taking charge of both smartphone and VR business moving forward in their respective regions.
- Daniel O’Brien, GM of HTC VIVE Americas, is now GM of HTC Americas.
- Alvin Wang Graylin, GM of HTC VIVE China, is now GM of HTC China.
- Raymond Pao, VP of HTC VR New Technology, is now GM of North Asia.
- Paul Brown, GM of HTC VIVE Europe, is now GM of HTC Europe.
- Chen(陈柏谕), GM of HTC smartphone Taiwan, is now GM of HTC Taiwan.
HTC’s smartphone business has been struggling in face of big names such as Samsung, Apple, and the growing Chinese brand Huawei, but if the report holds true, and HTC is indeed promoting VR execs to greater places of power, it could signal a decisive repositioning of HTC from a smartphone-first company to a primarily VR-first company. Considering HTC recently sold off much of its smartphone team to Google in a $1.1 billion deal, which saw half of HTC’s smartphone R&D division transferred to Google, they’ll need VR more than ever.

Prototype VR Controller Dynamically Distributes Weight to Fit Virtual Objects
There’s no doubt about it; weilding a real controller that matches the weight and feel of a virtual object is far more immersive than having a disconnect between the two. The problem, of course, is that if a controller is made to fit too specific a role, it’s less useful for interacting with a wide range of virtual objects. A novel prototype based on an HTC Vive controller attempts to solve this problem by allowing the controller to redistribute its weight on the fly.
Created by Manuel Rosado, a Madrid-based VR developer, the so called Nyoibo prototype controller uses a series of interconnected servos to redistribute the controller’s weight to more accurately match the currently held object. The motors and weight are also used to create haptic feedback emulating the kick of shooting a gun.
In a video showing the prototype in action, you can see the controller’s various shapes corresponding to a smaller gun like a mini Uzi, a larger gun like an AK, and even a sword.
While the total weight of the controller of course doesn’t change, the center of gravity (and thus moment of inertia) does, which goes a long way to altering your perception of the held object’s shape. Rosado notes in the video that the virtual weapons in this case don’t have any artificial recoil; their movement is entirely based on the real feedback from the Nyoibo prototype.
While the Nyoibo controller is well demonstrated for use with various weapons, it’s easy to imagine how the concept could apply more broadly to represent other items like tools, sports equipment, and more.
Rosado says he’s working on a similar prototype for the Oculus Touch controllers. He appears to still be actively developing of the device; a short video posted earlier this month appears to show a slightly more refined prototype.

Communicating weight and shape of objects in VR is a big challenge, and it’s being approached from several angles. In addition to Rosado interesting work, we’ve also seen shapeshifting controllers which allow players to manually change between different poses on the fly, static controllers which use physics to create the illusion of the player holding larger objects, and even software-driven approaches to communicating weight to players.

ARKit Recreation of ‘The Ring’ TV Scene Foretells AR’s Inevitable Weirdness
Let’s face it, when augmented reality headsets and glasses become commonplace, the world is going to get weird in a lot of unexpected ways. In the meantime, we can get a little sneak peek into that weirdness yet to come with Abhishek Singh’s latest ARKit project that recreated the iconic scene from The Ring (2002).
In the short 1-minute clip, Singh pans to the back of the flatscreen television to show that nothing is behind it, and turns on the scene from The Ring where the creepy vengeful ghost-girl emerges from the TV into the physical world. Just like the film, the ghost girl emerges from the TV, but instead of murdering him in a grizzly attack, he’s chased down the hallway to what we assume is his ultimate demise.
Get an eye-full of the creepiness below:
The project, which hasn’t been released publicly, was designed using ARKit, Apple’s software development tool that allows you to create augmented reality experiences targeted at pretty much any Apple mobile device running iOS 11.
Considering ARKit doesn’t automatically map the position of walls or other things that might occlude your view of a virtual object, Singh is able to mimic the native function of a dedicated AR headset such as Microsoft HoloLens by applying occlusion shaders to manually map his space before hitting the ‘spawn dead girl’ button.
Singh is no stranger to the digital lime light for his projects either, as he’s the same developer that created an AR version of Super Mario Bros. (1985) that went viral back in June 2017. And while neither may be particularly useful, you can’t help but gawk at what may be the future of AR content.

MLB ‘Home Run Derby VR’ Game to Land on PSVR and Vive This Spring
Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby VR will let you step into the box and swing for the bleachers. The game, first trialed at All-Star FanFest back in June, is now heading to a total of 10 ballparks for the 2018 season, and also to consumers on PSVR and Vive this spring.
According to a Forbes report, a consumer version of the game will offer support for the platform’s respective motion controllers, and will feature virtual versions of all three All-Star Game locations: Miami’s Marlins Park, D.C.’s Nationals Park, and Cleveland’s Progressive Field, where the 2019 Midsummer Classic will be played.
There aren’t any pricing or other detail at this time, although MLB says they’ll be releasing it at a later date.
While the list of ballparks featuring the out-of-home version isn’t public yet, the report holds that at least two demonstrations are confirmed; one in Puerto Rico for the Indians and Twins games in April and the other in Mexico for the Dodgers and Padres games in May. Previous demos have included HTC Vive headsets coupled with Vive Trackers attached to physical baseball bats—something that’s definitely a surreal and immersive experience.

Lead FX Artist on ‘ARKTIKA.1’ Shares Strategies for Great Effects in VR
ARKTIKA.1, an Oculus exclusive due to launch later this year, is shaping up to be one of VR’s best looking games to date. You’ll take it as no surprise that the title is being developed by 4A Games, the developer behind the Metro series (and its stunning next installment, Metro Exodus). One important part of making a game look great is skilled use of effects—dynamic elements like particles, smoke, muzzle flashes, explosions, and lighting. But the methods for making great looking effects for traditional games take on new challenges when it comes to VR, especially when teetering on the edge of visual fidelity and the high performance required for smooth VR rendering. In this guest article, 4A Games explores their approach to making effects in Arktika.1.
Guest Article by Nikita Shilkin
Nikita Shilkin is a Senior VFX Artist at 4A Games. Before that, he worked on films and ads as a Generalist Artist, and then as a VFX/Onset Supervisor on sci-fi and other types of films.
Update (2/22/18): Following the launch of Arktika.1, Shilkin has published a new video further detailing the effects he created for the game.
Since this article was initially published, we’ve also published our Arktika.1 Review and a behind-the-scenes article exploring the artwork and insights behind the game’s development.
Original Article (8/13/17): To get an idea of my prior work, here’s some of the scenes I’ve worked on:
At the moment, I am working on effects for the ARKTIKA.1 project. This is a sci-fi VR shooter with a—traditional for the company—focus on immersing audience through story and high-quality visuals that make it possible to talk about it as an AAA product.
To begin with, I would like to note that making effects for VR is essentially no different from producing them for ordinary games, with the exception of few nuances that I have noticed during the production.
- The first and the most important one – player’s freedom and as a consequence, the unpredictability of almost all his actions.
- Focus on performance. The requirement of constant 90 frames damages your technical and creative freedom, forcing you to constantly balance on the verge of game quality and player comfort.
- The final checkpoint is a headset. Due to the difference in resolution, gamma and the features of the virtual reality, what looked wonderful and beautiful in the editor might not look so good with a headset.
Based on these three rules, we can start analyzing the production. So, let’s begin with some core things.
Weapons
Since we are talking about VR, we don’t have fixed camera, animations, timings or other constant values, which means we can never know how the player will shoot and from which side he sees the weapon. And the only way out is to make the effect work beautifully from all sides.
And the first standard mistake is trying to make one mind-blowing sequence, which unfortunately will work only with a classic fixed camera, becoming ridiculous when turning the weapon.
The solution is quite simple – no matter how complex the effect is, break it into simple fixed parts using all three directions. So you get not only volume, but also a visual randomness that will make a shot unique.
Above: (left) a muzzle flash made with volume in all directions, (right) a typical ‘first person’ muzzle flash looks great from a static camera angle behind the weapon, but breaks down if seen from other directions.
Since the VR does not feature a classic gun sight, nor the center of the screen, and aiming with a foresight or a scope is not a common thing, the projectiles of the weapon should be clearly visible. Most of the players will rely on this factor, making corrections for the bullets and their impacts.
In this regard, there are several tips:
- The muzzle flash must not block the sight of the bullet.
- The bullet should be clearly visible (size, brightness, length). The lower the rate of fire, the better the bullets are seen with the trails behind them. The faster, the higher the brightness is.
- Don’t be lazy, create different bullets with variable impacts for all weapons, as this will also help the player to understand shooting direction.
And finally, a little piece of advice, if you have any firearms (or any other weapons with smoke particles), put them into a separate system, away from the flame and set free in the world, that looks interesting.

‘Rec Room’ to Get New Pirate-themed Quest ‘Isle of Skulls’ Starting March 1st
Rec Room (2016), the social VR app from Against Gravity, is getting a new quest soon that promises to shiver ye timbers.
Rec Room is one of the leading social apps out there. While it offers plenty of games for VR users to play such as disc golf, paintball, and laser tag, the charmingly-styled Rec Room is probably best known for their multiplayer quests, a minigame that allows up to four players to fight their way through enemy-filled levels – usually a comically re-dressed, sprawling gymnasium where these’s plenty of atmosphere, loot to collect and an end-stage boss to battle.
Even through it’s all free and only a single level a piece, the production quality is above many paid games, giving users more of a reason to come back and populate the servers.
Now, the company released a teaser for its next big quest, a pirate-themed affair called Isle of Lost Skulls, which is due out March 1st, 2018.
Isle of the Lost Skulls will be Rec Room’s fourth quest, coming after Quest for the Golden Trophy, The Rise of Jumbotron, and The Curse of the Crimson Cauldron.
Rec Room is available for free on PSVR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
Check it out on PSN, Steam and Oculus Home.
