Play ‘Onward’ Tactical Multiplayer Shooter for Free on Rift This Weekend

Onward, the tactical multiplayer shooter for Vive and Rift, is getting another free weekend – this time for Rift players on Oculus Home.

The free weekend begins January 25th at 1:00 PM ET and goes
until the 29th at 3:00 AM ET (your time here). Check out Onward on Oculus Home here.

Created by Downpour Interactive, Onward offers 5v5 online multiplayer, as well as solo/coop vs AI mode, and objective-based gameplay. With 30 different weapons at your disposal, all of which are modeled after real-world military weaponry, the focus of Onward is decidedly on creating realistic battles. Fans craving the usual assortment of heads-up displays or cross-hairs seen in other shooters need not apply.

Normally priced at $25, the free weekend should give you a chance to see if the mil sim-paced game is right for you. At this point in Early Access, there isn’t a ranking system in place, so expect to meet all levels of skill when you first start playing. This can be daunting, considering how much of a hardcore player base the game has garnered in the year and half since it launched into Early Access, but the free weekend should level the playing field somewhat as a glut of new players enter the game.

Windows VR Headsets See Huge Sales at Amazon US

If you’ve been eyeing a Windows VR headset, you’ll be interested to see the huge discounts currently available from Amazon US on every Windows VR headset except for the Samsung Odyssey.

The Windows “Mixed Reality” VR headsets launched just a few months ago, but you can already pick one up with some steep savings currently available from Amazon US. Here’s a quick look at each headset’s MSRP and the currently available price (brand new, including controllers):

  • Currently: $220 (45% discount)
• Lenovo Explorer w/ Controllers
  • MSRP: $400
  • Currently: $245 (39% discount)
• Dell Visor w/ Controllers
  • MSRP: $450
  • Currently: $220 (52% discount)
• HP Windows Mixed Reality Headset w/ Controllers
  • MSRP: $450
  • Currently: $240 (47% discount)

Meanwhile, the Samsung Odyssey headset—which the company has positioned as the premium Windows VR offering—is actually selling at $600 on Amazon US right now, higher than its original $500 MSRP.

The reasoning surrounding the steep sales currently seen on Amazon US aren’t clear, nor is it apparent if they are permanent, or how long they might last if they aren’t.

When the Windows VR headsets were first announced all the way back in 2016, their ~$350 price point was mighty compelling against the then quite pricey Rift ($600) and Vive ($800). But by the time the Windows VR headsets actually made it out the door in late 2017, those incumbents had seen their own major price cuts—now with the Rift at $400 and the Vive at $600—giving the Windows VR headsets much less of an edge of price.

The fact that all of these Windows VR headsets are seeing simultaneous discounts makes me think that this may be a coordinated effort between the Windows VR headset makers to see if a reduced price will become a compelling selling point for the headsets.
