Cybershoes Aims to Offer Lower Cost Alternative to VR Treadmills, Kickstarter Now Live

Vienna-based startup Cybershoes today launched their much-awaited Kickstarter campaign, which seeks to commercialize the titular device that allows you to ‘walk’ in VR with your own two feet.
The idea is pretty simple: the shoe coverings feature a barrel-style wheel, that when spun, translates to forward and backwards VR movement. Sitting on a swivel stool, you mimic a walking movement and travel in the desired direction.
We went hands-on at this year’s Gamescom, and it appears Cybershoes basically accomplishes what it set out to do: increase immersion and reduce VR-related nausea. And while Cybershoes aren’t a perfect solution, the device makes a compelling case for lighter, space-saving locomotion controllers that aren’t nearly as disastrous to the pocketbook like the larger, heavier, more expensive VR treadmills out there.
When we tried Cybershoes at Gamescom in August, strafing wasn’t a possibility, as the device lets you move forward and backwards, but not left to right; if you want to go left, you can either use an artificial locomotion method like snap-turn, or physically swivel yourself in that direction. The creators have since implemented ‘directional’ walking though, which makes your point of view independent from the shoes’ walking direction—something the creators claim is a more natural way of walking through and viewing the virtual environment.
A pair of Cybershoes comes with a wireless radio receiver (not Bluetooth) that connects via USB to your PC. Requiring three hours of charging via Micro USB, the creators say you should have between eight to ten hours of playtime. Since the shoes emulate button presses, any PC VR game with ‘free’ locomotion should technically support Cybershoes, including games such as Skyrim VR, Arizona Sunshine, Onward and Rec Room to name a few.
The basic funding tier, which includes a pair of shoes, costs €193 (~$223 USD), although a Super Early Bird tier cuts that down to €151 (~$175 USD). You will of course need a swivel chair and probably some way to suspend the headset’s cable (the company suggests IKEA’s Regolit lamp holder).
Milled from a single block of conductive plastic, the shoes are quite sturdy and are said to support up to 220lb / 100kg. A user’s full weight probably shouldn’t rest on the shoes though, as walking in them could result in a fall.
The campaign, which is set to last a month, is hoping to garner at least €30,000 (~$3,450 USD) in funding.

‘Mario Kart VR’ Comes to the US Today in Bandai Namco’s Newest VR Arcade

For the first time, BANDAI NAMCO is bringing to the United States a number of popular VR experiences once only available in Japan and UK-based VR ZONE arcades. Included in the line-up is the much-awaited Mario Kart Arcade GP VR.
VR ZONE Portal Washington D.C. is officially opening up shop today at Union Station near the national mall. Bandai Namco’s ‘Portal’ naming scheme indicates that the venue is smaller than the full-sized VR ZONEs in both Shinjuku and Osaka, Japan.
VR games available to the public include Mario Kart VR, Argyle Shift, and Ski Rodeo, and appear to be on a first-come, first-serve basis with no reservations required.
The star of the show is undoubtedly Mario Kart VR though, which pits four players against each other using HTC Vive headsets, Vive Trackers, and motion platform outfitted with a steering wheel, acceleration and brake pedals. Users, playing as Mario, Peach, Luigi, or Toad race around the track grabbing classic items like banana skins and shells while dodging Bowser—essentially what everyone wants from a VR version of Mario Kart.
“BANDAI NAMCO is thrilled to be a part of the innovative, cutting-edge project that is VR ZONE Portal. The launches in Japan and the UK brought great success, and we hope to follow suit in Washington, D.C.,” said Steve Ignarski, National Sales Manager for Bandai Namco Amusement America. “Mario Kart VR is a long-awaited title and we have no doubt it will be well-received in the states, due to its incredible, immersive game-play and outstanding equipment from HTC Vive.”
There’s a catch however. All three VR experiences will be featured for only six months, meaning the VR ZONE Portal in D.C. is a limited time engagement that will close up shop presumably sometime in March 2019. Check out the VR Zone Portal Washington D.C. Facebook page for more info.

‘Vader Immortal’ VR Series to Be a Canonical Part of the ‘Star Wars’ Saga

ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm’s immersive entertainment division, is bringing a Darth Vader-themed VR series to the recently announced Oculus Quest. With six main films dedicated to telling to Vader’s story though, you’d think there wouldn’t be much left to say about the franchise’s archetypal ‘dark father’. The developers behind the upcoming Vader Immortal however say in a blog post that there’s more to learn about Darth Vader, and it’s going to be canon to the series.
Written and produced by David S. Goyer, screenwriter behind a prolific body of works including The Dark Knight franchise and the location-based VR experience Secrets of the Empire, the new VR experience is slated to be a three-part series set between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
The studio is staying pretty tight-lipped for now on specifics, although we’ve been told that users will visit Darth Vader’s castle on the lava-world of Mustafar, which was first seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There, we’re told that we’ll “encounter Vader himself and wield a lightsaber.”
According to ILMxLAB, Vader Immortal “counts [as canon], and was hatched and developed with guidance from the Lucasfilm Story Group. It will be an official part of the overall saga, adding to what we know of Vader and his story, and of everyone and everything else that Vader Immortal touches.”
“We came up with the concept, and then we had a conversation about where in the timeline it would fit,” Goyer says. “Everyone felt very strongly that it’s a legitimate Vader story and that it advances the ball in terms of who he is and what his goals are. We were also determined to make sure that it’s a story you can only experience in VR. There aren’t any other plans to port this into any other medium. We wanted to design it specifically for VR.”
Users will also be able to explore Vader’s castle, which ought to reveal what Goyer calls “some other depths to his character that might be difficult to experience in other mediums.”
Vader Immortal is set to launch in tandem with Quest sometime in Spring 2019.
