‘Sairento VR’ Exits Steam Early Access Today, Launches on Oculus Home

Sairento VR (2018), a VR ninja action game from indie developer Mixed Realms, ended its year-long stint in Steam Early Access today. The game, which features both single player and multiplayer modes, also launched on Oculus Home today.
Sairento VR launches out of Early Access with a new single player campaign mode that lets you hone your slow-motion, high-flying ninja moves as you shoot pistols and physically hack away with your katanas at the game’s ‘cyber ninja’ enemies. The game also includes a single player arcade mode, multiplayer co-op and PvP mode.
One of the most attractive bits about the game is its unique locomotion system, which is best described as a ‘point-and-click’ system that lets you quickly bound through the air with the ability to triple jump and wall-run your way to almost any target, making for fast-paced action across a relatively large map. From what we’ve played in Early Access, it proves to be a really interesting mash-up of Raw Data (2017) and Superhot VR (2017).
Releasing the news on the game’s Steam page, the developers say that despite exiting Early Access, there’s still a few things to be done.
As many of you have rightly pointed out, an exit from EA is just a technicality. It does not mean that we will be washing our hands off it from now on. While it does mean that we believe all the elements required to make a full game are in place, we still want to continue ironing out the remaining imperfections. We also want to add more content periodically to reward our fans’ loyalty and support for a while more.
Our only regret is that we cannot make the Campaign mode as robust as we would like it to be due to a lack of resources, although we really did try our very best.
Yet, despite its flaws, we think that Sairento is a game that we can all be proud of. And by we, we mean you and us. Sairento VR is a result of the cumulative efforts of both your constructive feedback and our hard work. Without you, Sairento won’t exist in its current form and we want to salute you for that. As such, we have dedicated the About page in the game to you. This page is about you and not about us. Please check it out.
Sairento VR is currently on sale for $25.50 on Humble Store, a 15% reduction from its normal $30 price tag. You can also purchase direct from Steam (Vive & Rift) or from Oculus Home (Rift).

Walmart’s Tech Incubator Store No. 8 Acquires VR Startup Spatialand

Wal-Mart, the big-box retail giant, unveiled its Store No. 8 tech startup incubator last year with the aim of researching and investing in emergent tech like AR and VR. Now, Store No. 8 has acquired Spatialand, a startup that has created a platform and toolset for enterprise companies to create VR content.
In addition to her duties as Principal & Founder Store No. 8, Katie Finnegan will be signing on as interim CEO of Spatialand, according to a Wal-Mart blog post.
Spatialand initially worked with Store No. 8 last year to create the Wal-Mart incubator’s VR gala, Innov8, which the company says culminated in a proof of concept VR experience for how they think “millions may shop in the future.”
Finnegan says the new venture will operate in stealth with Spatialand’s Kim Cooper and Store No. 8 consultant Jeremy Welt as co-founders. The team, Finnegan says, will “develop and explore new products and uses of VR through immersive retail environments that can be incorporated by all facets of Walmart, online and offline.”
Kim Cooper is a two-time Emmy nominee and under her leadership, Spatialand’s VR platform has created projects for Oculus, Intel, Reebok and Linkin Park.
Jeremy Welt, a VR strategy and product advisor, helped launch YouTube’s first commercial deal to working on the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Maker Studios. He has also been a consultant for 360 video app company Splash and Mindshow, the VR movie creator tool.

Open Source Game Engine ‘Godot Engine’ Gets VR Support

The full release of Godot 3.0 is now available, bringing VR support to the engine via a lightweight, 3DoF, ‘Cardboard-like’ solution, and OpenVR support through a GDNative-based plugin. The multiplatform Godot Engine is an open source, non-profit project available to download for free via the official site or through Steam.
As described in the news article on the Godot Engine website, Godot 3.0 is the result of over 18 months of development, bringing many changes and improvements, with a “brand new rendering engine with state-of-the-art PBR workflow for 3D, an improved assets pipeline, GDNative to load native code as plugins, C# 7.0 support, and many other features.”
VR support originally appeared with the introduction of an ‘ARVR Server architecture’ in the October 2017 Alpha 2 release, which allows various AR and VR platforms to communicate with the engine. Lead developer Juan Linietsky describes the GDNative ARVR framework as “tightly knit,” allowing support for other VR platforms to be developed “independently of the core game engine.”
Further information about the team’s plans for AR and VR support can be found in an earlier post by programmer Bastiaan Olij, which details the “Native Mobile” interface for lightweight mobile VR apps which just require headset orientation and lens distortion, and the full compatibility with SteamVR headsets via their GDNative OpenVR implementation.
An “experimental” GDNative module for OpenHMD is also available, the open source project that enables cross-platform support for several headsets, including PSVR. There are further plans to bring Gear VR and Daydream support in the future. AR is now planned for the 3.1 release; support for ARKit has been in progress for several months via Olij’s ARKit branch on GitHub.
Olij recently posted the video above demonstrating how easy it is to enable OpenVR in a project now that the module has become an official asset in the library, and a few users, including tutorial makers Game From Scratch are reporting success when using a Windows Mixed Reality headset running SteamVR.
