Former Mozilla WebVR Pioneers Launch ‘Supermedium’ VR Browser

Supporting HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, Supermedium is a new, fully VR browser from the creators of VR web framework ‘A-Frame’ and part of the original Mozilla team behind the WebVR initiative. Available to download on Supermedium’s website, the browser aims to become the new home for lightweight, fast-loading, web-based VR experiences.

There are several VR-enabled browsers already available, but these are often used to access traditional 2D webpages, something that is not currently possible with Supermedium. For now, it only links to curated sites, and the team plans to expand the number of bookmarks rapidly over the coming weeks. Support for traditional URL entry is also planned, which will make sense once more sites “adhere to best practices for WebVR,” as the team explains in their opening blog post.

This VR-first approach could open the floodgates to VR experiences not found through content stores, either due to their tiny size, or their questionable ‘value’ or subject matter. Nobody wants to search the Steam or Oculus stores and install an app for the VR equivalent of a funny GIF, for example, and of course, the open web offers the least-sheltered environment for content discovery. The beauty of web-based VR is that is operates with standard web technologies such as WebGL, WebVR, and Javascript, with no installation and no publishers.

“The Web breathes freshness and diversity into the VR content ecosystem,” writes the team in their blog entry. “A VR site could be a bite-sized meme, a low fidelity game, a small store, a wedding page, an educational outing quickly thrown together for some students, or something taboo. Experiences that would otherwise not make it past the app store standards. With the Web, everything is permitted.”

Kevin Ngo, Diego Marcos, and Diego Goberna’s new San Francisco-based startup is supported by seed funding from Y Combinator, as part of the Winter 2018 batch, which also includes social augmented reality platform Hippo.

Play VR Sport ‘SPARC’ for Free on Rift This Weekend

Sparc (2017), the VR sport from EVE Online developers CCP Games, is hosting a free weekend for Rift players on Oculus Home. Temporary free access has already begun, and will conclude on February 4th at 11:59 PM PT (local time here).

Initially launched in April 2017 on PSVR, Sparc is a unique VR sport that pits you in a 1v1 skill-based match; it’s a little like a racket sport from some neon, Tron-inspired future. Sparc, which features multiplayer game modes, as well as single player challenges and training modes, was later released on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with crossplay last November.

Unfortunately for Sparc, CCP has since shut down the Atlanta-based branch tasked with creating, selling off their Newcastle branch in charge of EVE: Valkyrie (2016) as wellWhile development on Valkyrie continues under Sumo Digital, no new content has been created for Sparc, leaving it essentially to wane alongside capable, but ill-serviced games such as Eagle Flight and Werewolves Within.

Check out Sparc for Rift on Oculus Home here.

‘Earthlight: Spacewalk’ International Space Station Experience is Coming to PSVR

Announced back in October 2015, Earthlight, the first-person space simulator from Opaque Space that puts you aboard the International Space Station (ISS), was eventually supposed to come to HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PSVR. Instead, the developers opted to only release the game in arcades, dubbing it Earthlight Arcade. Now, a consumer version, which came to HTC Vive four months ago, is coming to PSVR.

The consumer version, Earthlight: Spacewalk (2017) initially released on Viveport for HTC Vive in November 2017, but we still weren’t sure when the experience was headed to other headsets as previously thought.

Jennifer Scheurle, Game Design Lead at Opaque Space, tweeted out yesterday that the studio is indeed working on PSVR support, and that she’s “super pleased with how well this runs on PSVR already… was majorly worried about framerate, but it’s gorgeous.”

The experience puts you in the boots of Ana, an astronaut tasked with performing her seventy-sixth space walk on the ISS. Based on a multi-year collaboration with NASA, the game takes you through several tasks performed on the ISS which clearly aim to capture authenticity over action.

Earthlight: Spacewalk is currently priced at $10 on Viveport. The studio hasn’t released word on when the game will arrive on PSVR. Critically, there’s also been no mention whether its coming natively to Rift or not.

Horror Roguelike ‘The Persistence’ to Arrive on PSVR July 24th

The Persistence is an upcoming rougelike shooter from Firesprite Games, the studio behind The Playroom VR. Set to release July 24th, the procedurally generated title aims to present an interesting mix of asymmetrical gameplay by allowing a single VR player to do the heavy lifting while others connect via their phone or tablet and disable (or enable) traps, baddies, and scavenge for goodies.

Set aboard an out-of-control science and research vessel called ‘The Persistence’, you’re tasked with combating the now mutated crew of survivors, the results of a failed teleporter experiment. One more problem; The Persistence is also being pulled into the gravity of the collapsing star, and it’s your job to save the ship.

While you can fight back against the zombie hordes with its many guns, the blogpost announcing the game puts special emphasis on the need for stealthiness. According to the blogpost, locomotion is “smooth FPS controls,” but you’re also equipped with a short-range teleporter which is “perfect for moving stealthily between cover.”

Using a phone or tablet (local play only), your friends can also join in on the fun by ‘hacking’ into Solex, the ship’s engineering system. Here, your headset-less friends can decide to help you, or cash in on a big payday if you die by spawning new enemies and make them attack.

There aren’t any US store links yet, so you’ll need to keep an eye on PlayStation’s general listing for now. Pre-orders are already available (strangely enough) in both the Finland and Romania PSN stores, which list the game for around $30.
