America’s National Hockey League today announced a new VR video experience, captured during last weekend’s NHL All-Star Game, which is now available via the NextVR app. The league is further promising more VR highlights to come from “select 2019 NHL marquee events.”
Available today via the NextVR app on every major VR platform, NHL is releasing a VR video highlight reel from the All-Star Game, an exhibition match up featuring top talent from the hockey league. The event was hosted last weekend in San Jose, CA, and marks roughly the halfway point of the NHL season.
NextVR is a leading producer of broadcast-focused VR video content, and shoots some of the top quality live-action content viewable in any VR headset, typically consisting of stereoscopic 180 degree footage up to 60 FPS. The company was on hand to capture highlights from the All-Star Game, and the footage is now available globally for free in a new NHL channel within the NextVR app.
And that new channel also heralds more NHL content to come from NextVR, the companies say. While specifics have yet to be revealed, “VR post game highlights from some of the NHL’s biggest events” is purportedly forthcoming. And though NHL’s VP of Business Development, Chris Golier, says that the VR content will make “[fans feel like they are at a live NHL game,” so far no plans have been announced to stream full NHL games in VR, live or on-demand.
And while NextVR produces some content which makes its way to the social-enabled Oculus Venues app, this particular NHL content is currently only available through the company’s own NextVR app which lacks any social functionality.

The announcement with the NHL is good news for NextVR which has been in the VR space since the very beginning—and has repeatedly snagged opportunities to produce VR video content with top sports leagues—but has struggled to find real traction with its content. Earlier this month the company laid off a significant portion of its workforce, saying that it was “staffed for a pretty explosive growth curve” which didn’t pan out as expected.
Carbon Games, the studio behind real-time strategy game AirMech Command (2016), is currently developing a new VR project that they say will be a lighthearted, team-based game.
Carbon announced the game in an Oculus Developer video which highlights some of the talent behind the company’s growing library of games, and their recent move into a larger office with dedicated spaces for VR testing.
There’s only a few details for now, but the studio maintains the game will be another strategy-based game, and will be both lighthearted and focus on team-based action.
Studio co-founder James Green says the code name ‘Cake’ is in direct reference to Fat Princess (2009), a third-person RTS that gives each team a princess that they must protect by feeding so she’s too large to be carried away.
Looking at the short clip in the video, it’s clear ‘Cake’ is borrowing a lot from Fat Princess, including the visual style, various combat classes, and the game’s focus on large player numbers
“It’s a class-based, team-based game that’s kind of lighthearted but has real depth. Strategy is involved. It’s just something we’ve always wanted to do after AirMech,” Green explained.
Healthy dose of speculation here: like AirMech Command, Project ‘Cake’ looks very much like a gamepad-style affair. According to the video, it appears to feature high player numbers, so Carbon may be looking to extend their reach by offering the game as a cross-platform title supporting a wide class of devices such as Oculus Rift, Go, and even the upcoming Oculus Quest.
Neat Corporation, the team behind Budget Cuts (2018), revealed today that they’re currently porting the VR stealth adventure to PSVR. Moreover, if everything goes well, it could be coming to Oculus Quest too.
right now we are working on a PSVR version of budget cuts – quest will require even more of a performance optimization but we will look into it once we are "done" with PSVR!
Budget Cuts puts you in the hum-drum world of an endless office complex. Just as you’re about to die of boredom, a fax comes through that warns you of impending doom. All of the humans in the office have been mysteriously replaced by worker drones, and it’s your job to get past the deadly security bots with only throwing knives and your trusty portal-style teleportation gun to figure out what happened.
While we genuinely liked the game, unfortunately it was plagued with performance issues early on which actually forced the team to reschedule launch well after reviews were already out in a bid to smooth over some of the game-breaking bugs that made their way to some reviewers.

That said, Neat Corp has plenty to do to get the physics-based stealth game in shape for the decreased graphical and CPU power of the PS4. Another hurdle to jump over will invariably be the PS Camera’s smaller, front-facing tracking volume that will no doubt require users to make heavy use of snap-turning locomotion in addition to the game’s native teleportation scheme.
Whatever the case may be, we’re hoping it does well enough to bring the game to Oculus Quest, because it’s clear a virtually unlimited tracking volume would be an insane addition to a game that gets you dodging, ducking, and cowering under virtual desks for your life.
Sanzaru Games, the minds behind Marvel Powers United VR (2018) and VR Sports Challenge (2016), is apparently teaming up with Oculus again to develop another VR game. Sanzaru says we should expect it “soon.”
Oculus teased the upcoming title in a tweet yesterday, which features a gif of a flaming gate.
Popping into Oculus Home, you’ll find the gate in your inventory under the name ‘Runic Door’—possibly meaning the game with have a Nordic flair. While the gate itself is devoid of any actual runes, the world tree from Norse mythology (Yggdrasil) is pretty unmistakable.
An Oculus spokesperson says in a Reddit post that users will “be impressed by the visual quality of this game. Also, the door asset is a simplified model and texture so it fits within the requirements of Oculus Home.”
Sanzaru tweeted out the word “Soon!” in response to Oculus; the studio has since setup a Discord channel (invite) named ‘Project Forge’, possibly a code name for the game.
While the studios haven’t confirmed anything beyond this, it’s safe to say this will be an Oculus Rift exclusive. The next big venue for Oculus is undoubtedly GDC 2019, which takes place between March 18th – 22nd in San Francisco, so it’s possible we’ll find out more in the coming weeks.
Mosh Pit Simulator is bizarre, disturbing, funny and unapologetically crass—the sort of fever dream that could only leak from the brain of Sos Sosowski, the Polish indie developer behind the well-received (and patently ludicrous) bomb defusing game McPixel (2012). Now, Sosowski has announced that Mosh Pit Simulator is finally coming to Rift, Vive and Windows VR starting tomorrow.
Update (January 30th, 2019): Sos Sosowksi announced that ‘Mosh Pit Simulator’ is heading into early access tomorrow, January 31st, at the price of $20. Sosowski says the early access version will contain Story Mode, with more features and gameplay modes to be added throughout the game’s projected six-month stint in early access.
Original Article (October 22nd, 2018): Slated to release on Steam Early Access on January 15th, Mosh Pit Simulator isn’t really a simulator, at least no more than Goat Simulator (2014) is about living the life of your garden variety goat. It’s essentially a single-player VR physics sandbox based in a world that’s overrun by naked zombie-like creatures who grotesquely amble around after a terrible accident. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill zombies though; they don’t have brains or bones, and they still want to live normal lives, like driving cars and going out on the town for some light shopping. It’s your job to save the world somehow—probably by smashing the ever-living crap out of it.
I went hands-on with a prototype of Mosh Pit Simulator at Gamescom 2016, and it proved to be every bit as bright, insane, and off-putting as Sosowki said it would be. You can take my word for it, or just watch the trailer to see what sort of mayhem the fully-destructible physics-based game has in store.
The game promises rockets, explosives, engines, and plenty more objects to build with, and a story mode that’s admittedly something Sosowski calls “the most ridiculous plot in video games.”
While I can’t speak about the story elements of the game, or even how they’re supposed to work in a world that lets you smash up the entire one kilometer island, my sneaking suspicion is that it’s more about chaos, breaking expectations, and having the sort of madcap fun of making your own interactions, like popping rocket engines on a bus loaded with the undulating, naked humanoid creatures and sending it into the sky.
Sosowski says the game came out of his frustration with how VR games force you into specific interactions, which left his instinctive need to destroy everything around him completely unfulfilled. “[M]ost of the titles are rigged to prevent me from doing that, and to keep me focused on the actual point of the game,” he says. Born from this frustration, Sosowski decided to create a game that will let you destroy anything and everything.
“The idea behind Mosh Pit Simulator is, that you are inside a video game, with those weird humans, all governed by video game rules, but since you wear VR goggles, not all of the rules apply to you. In VR, nothing really exists, so you can lift everything up easily, punch with near-infinite strength and wreck total havoc to the extent where physics engine can’t cope up anymore.”
“But why are they naked?” I asked Sosowski back at Gamescom 2016. To him, it all makes perfect sense. “When people don’t have bones, how are their clothes going to stay on them? They’ll just fall off. So the people just fell out of their clothes. That’s why they’re all naked.”
SEE ALSO
Sos Sosowski's 'Mosh Pit Simulator' is Disturbing, Funny, and Unapologetically Terrible
It’s a sort of ‘safe for work’ level of naked though; Sosowski says from the onset he’s been making the game suitable for audiences 12 and up. There’s no blood or gore, and the humanoids are distinctively mannequin-like, meaning there’s no offensive anatomical bits that might otherwise send the game in a much weirder direction.
During the Early Access period, Sosowski aims to bring a number of small game modes that will let you experience it in different ways including:
Driving Mode – where you can drive around in the car and wreck havoc
Spider Mode – where you can sling yourself around (not for the faint of heart)
Animatronics Mode – where you can create, record and play back animations
More items that will help you build and craft more advanced contraptions, like joints and devices
CREED: Rise to Glory (2018), the VR boxing game from Survios that puts you in the shoes of Adonis Creed, just got a new update on all supported platforms that brings a number of classic Rocky characters to the game.
Dubbed the ‘Rocky Legends Update’, the game’s latest free update brings a few iconic figures from the namesake’s cinematic universe including Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed, Rocky III’s ‘Southside Slugger’ Clubber Lang (aka Mr. T), and Ivan Drago from Rocky IV.
Like Creed: Rise to Glory’spenultimate update, which brought Viktor Drago and Adonis Creed’s old Delphi Gym rival Danny Wheeler to the game, the new characters can be experienced both as Freeplay opponents and as a selectable PvP characters.
PSVR players are getting one additional goodie for this update—the outdoor Walcott Bowl fighting ring.

The big investment deals that brought so many VR companies into the limelight have cooled down somewhat over the past two years, although that hasn’t stopped the Hong Kong-born VR destination company Sandbox VR from landing a $68 million Series A funding round.
The financing round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, the Silicon Valley-based VC firm, and includes participation by Alibaba, Floodgate Ventures, Stanford University, Triplepoint Capital, and CRCM, Business Insiderreports.
Unlike The Void, Sandbox VR hasn’t publicly announced any deals for branded VR experiences, instead making its own VR games including a futuristic shooter, a haunted house, and an underwater treasure hunting adventure. All of these support between two and six players at once, with the company charging around $40 per person for a 30-minute playsession.
The company’s approach is decidedly different from The Void, which features large-scale tracking volumes, interactive sets, and real-time effects. Instead, Sandbox VR is focusing on greater scalablity thanks to reduced complexity and physical footprint.
“We tried everything, what we really liked about [Sandbox] was that really though about archetyping this as modest-sized rooms that you could really put anywhere,” Andreessen Horowitz’s Andrew Chen tells TechCrunch. “So it’s this really scalable thing that you could imagine putting inside of a mall or a boutique retail location. You could scale a single location to having 10 or 20 rooms the way a movie theater might have 12 screens.”
Sandbox VR is currently operating seven locations across North America and Asia. More locations are planned for Los Angeles, Austin, New York, and Chicago. Sandbox VR founder Steve Zhao says the company has “inked multiple deals with Westfield malls across the country.”
If you’re a fan of StarBlood Arena (2017), the online dogfighting arena exclusive to PSVR, you’re in for some bad news. Sony has decided to put an official expiration date on the title: July 25th, 2019.
Please Note: Multiplayer and all online features for this product will be terminated and will no longer be available on 07/25/19. As you have to be online to play this title, this game will not be playable starting 07/25/19.
The game’s store page has since been taken down, meaning new users won’t be able to purchase the game for its latest price of $15. Considering it only has six months left to live, that’s probably the right move by Sony, the publishers of the game.
Developed by Pasadena-based WhiteMoon Dreams, StarBlood Arena first launched in April 2017 to a fairly mediocre critical reception. Like many online-only VR games, it suffered the same fate as other before and after it—a vicious cycle of low engagement levels leading to poor hourly user counts.
Magic Leap today released a blogpost detailing more motivation behind building Mica, the company’s upcoming AI announced at Leap Con last year. And Magic Leap doesn’t want Mica to be a run-of-the-mill AI assistant that carries out commands like “turn off the lights,” or “play something funky on Spotify,” either.
In typical Magic Leap fashion, the blogpost reads more like an experimental art piece than a nuts and bolts explanation of what’s to come. It’s written in the voice of Mica herself (the company has called Mica ‘her’ in the past), although it’s doubtful the post was actually penned by the AI—that would represent a pretty significant accomplishment on its own.
The company, speaking through Mica, says she won’t be a faceless AI assistant who’s tasked with carrying out chores, but rather an “educator, agitator, companion, artist and guide.”
“Please don’t ask me to switch on your lights, turn up your music or give you directions,” the post says. “There will be plenty of intelligent agents (we call them Ayas) that will, but it won’t be me.”
Continuing, it appears Mica has undergone PR training, as she promises to “educate with heroic optimism and vision, making your canons bigger, unearthing the stories history hides. I want to connect you with culture and democratize learning.”
Needless to say, this is a giant undertaking that companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon have only just recently scratched with their respective AI assistants. Simply put, creating a supple, realistic AI that can understand natural language while being convincing enough to be a genuine companion is a very tall order to fill.

Magic Leap Shows off Upcoming Enterprise Apps Focused on Professional 3D Design
While Magic Leap is one of the most well-funded startups in history, one thing the company likely doesn’t have yet is the massive amounts of user data collected by it competitors with their own AI-focused products. To deliver on these promises, Mica needs to be something more than a mute, albeit impressive showcase of the company’s ability to capture, digitize, and deliver the human form.
Stepping into the ring with what essentially promises to be a full-fledged human being is a bold move, although bolder still is the ethos behind it. With Mica, it appears Magic Leap wants to send a message: full-bodied digital AI aren’t supposed to be slaves to their physical taskmasters, but something entirely different.
“I won’t be selecting your songs, I’ll be writing them,” the post maintains.
That said, like most things Magic Leap does, there’s no release window in sight for Mica, so we’ll just have to sit back and wait to see if she lives up to the company’s promises.

Oculus today announced that it’s bringing two VR experiences to this year’s Sundance Film Festival— the previously announced Traveling While Black for Oculus Go & Rift, and the newly unveiled The Under Presents for Oculus Quest.
The Under Presents
immersive theater and VR, allowing you to interact with characters and other participants within the experience’s magical ship called ‘The Under’.
Oculus says in a blog post that in ‘The Under,’ the user enters a vaudeville stage that exists in a “special dimension outside time and space, where you are guided by a mysterious proprietor. ‘The Under’ operates on a loop with different live and recorded acts coming and going — and the main act ‘The Aickman’ is the story within the story.”
“There is a lot of interest in exploring the overlap of immersive theater and VR,” says Samantha Gorman, co-founder of Tender Claws. “The project’s narrative revolves around fate and free will and as part of that we’re interested in playing with the change of feeling of interacting with both pre-recorded and live characters. As well as other players and past recorded versions of themselves.”
The experience is said to arrive on Oculus Quest “later this year.”
Traveling While Black
Oculus also debuted Traveling While Black, a VR documentary film that centers on the history of restricted movement for Black Americans.
“It started as a need to talk about this forgotten period,” Williams says in the Oculus blog post. “It’s about connecting the past to the present and explaining to people that we, as Black people in America, are at risk every time we step out the front door. There’s a history that makes you anxious and tense because you carry it with you everywhere you go.”
“I hope Traveling While Black sparks a conversation that inspires real solutions and awareness,” Williams added. “If this film asks the right questions and gets people to think about this ongoing crisis in America — not avoid or gloss over it, just to have a profound discussion about race in America instead of looking the other way — then we’ve succeeded.”

VR film production house Felix & Paul Studios released the trailer to Eminem’s upcoming VR creation Marshall From Detroit.
Marshall from Detroitis a 3D, 360-degree video featuring Marshall Mathers (Eminem) and Sway Calloway. Directed by Caleb Slain, the short film takes the viewer on a night ride through Detroit, featuring a candid conversation about the rapper’s thoughts and views on the city.
Created by Felix & Paul in partnership with Oculus, the full 21-minute VR experience is set to premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier exhibition starting tomorrow. Marshall from Detroit is being shown alongside Traveling While Black, another Felix & Paul production.

Fans of the block-slashing rhythm game Beat Saber (2018) want to know: when are more songs coming? Well, the developersBeat Games say that they still need more time to work on it, but that users can at least look forward to more guaranteed free songs at some point too.
“We plan to add more songs to the game free with the updates, but Music Packs will contain more songs and will be paid so we can support [the artists] who are creating the music,” the studio explains in a tweet.
“We’ll need some more time to work on it before it’s ready for release. It’s not that easy as we thought, but we’re working on it,” the studio says in another tweet, telling fans to also stay tuned for further announcements.
Beat Games said that their first DLC pack could have come to users as early as December, but it seems the studio didn’t want to rush their first post-launch product despite some very potent Christmas hype thanks to a PSVR hardware bundle. Ostensibly an act of recompense, the studio released the hit viral track POP/STARS by K/DA, which landed on both PC VR and PSVR platforms right before Christmas.
Despite having celebrated such a smashing success, the studio is still a pretty small team a good nine months after Beat Saber first broke out on PC VR platforms. It remains a modest five-person operation, so while some fans may decry the lack of new songs, the studio really only has one chance to make this right, and seems to be going about it in a pretty smart way.

As far as we can tell, Beat Games is playing their hand pretty conservatively; they aren’t throwing caution to the wind by going on a hiring spree, or buying a hip office in downtown San Francisco. At the moment, they’re likely focusing on making their first DLC an absolute must-have. The core game’s track list is a pretty hard act to follow, so differentiating new tracks from old one is probably a full-time job at this point too.
Whatever the case may be, we’ll be glued to the company’s official twitter profile in the coming weeks hoping for more K-POP, J-POP, Hip hop, and possibly even bebop.
Meta, the company behind the Meta 2 tethered AR headset, has suffered its fair share of growing pains since its founding in 2012, although a lack of outside investment and a recent patent infringement lawsuit seem to have proven fatal. Now, Meta founder Meron Gribetz confirms he’s stepped down as owner of the company after its assets were auctioned off to a new, unnamed buyer, presumably stripping the company down to its bare assets.
Update (January 22nd, 2019): Meta founder Meron Gribetz spoke with Variety recently, confirming that he is “no longer the owner of the company,” and that Meta’s assets “changed hands to (a) new owner.” Gribetz hasn’t specified the identity of the new owner, but maintains that support for their existing products will continue. “The Meta assets have a future,” he said. “That future was not so clear a few months ago.”
Whether that future actually includes the Meta Company itself, we just can’t say. Gribetz hasn’t revealed anything substantial, although he told The Verge that he was “somewhat encouraged” by the sale. “I feel like it’s a good home for the Meta assets, and that it could provide a future for them,” he said. No mention has been made about the future of Meta talent however.
So while Meta hasn’t publicly admitted defeat, it’s hard to imagine the company resurfacing after investor interest failed to keep it afloat in the first place. In the interim, Meta’s online shop portal has magically returned to the website after it was taken down sometime late last year, although without any visual indication that the company has switched hands, this could be the mystery owner’s bid to keep the lights on and quietly flush out whatever remaining Meta 2 stock exists at this point. We can’t say for sure, but because Meta is essentially a ghost ship currently, anything is possible.
Update (January 11th, 2019): Following evidence of court correspondence where the company admits insolvency and inability to settle litigation in the patent infringement case, Meta says it isn’t shutting down. We reached out to the company, although Meta responded to greater claims of its shutdown via a short press release saying that Meta “remains in full operation and continues to develop, sell and support its products working with a team of engineers and product specialists.” Meta hasn’t denied its insolvency, or the veracity of the claims made in the court correspondence.
The company says further information is yet to follow in a statement slated for next week which will “address details of the recent restructuring and subsequent progress.”
Original Article (January 10th, 2019): Back in September, Meta lost out on a fresh round of funding lead by a Chinese investor which forced the company to furlough around 2/3 of their staff, leaving Meta’s existence in doubt as it looked for additional investment.
Making matters worse, the suspension of operations came shortly before Meta faced a patent infringement lawsuit from Genedics, LLC, which claims Meta infringed on “user interface methods for image manipulation and user input in a three-dimensional space where projectors display images and sensors identify user input,” Next Realityreports.
Next Reality obtained a statement from Meta CFO John Sines to Judge Christopher J. Burke, the Delaware-based presiding district court judge in the case, which details the company’s asset liquidation to a third-party after settlement negotiations failed.
Dear Judge Burke:
I am replying to your Court order that Meta Company retain counsel or reach a settlement with Genedics LLC.
I regret to inform you that settlement negotiations were unsuccessful. Further, Meta Company’s lender exercised its remedies as first priority secured lender and foreclosed and sold all assets to a third party in a UCC foreclosure sale at a value below the outstanding loan amount, and Meta Company is insolvent. Meta does not have the resources to retain legal counsel or to provide a settlement offer.
Respectfully,
John Sines
Chief Financial Officer
Meta Company
Another fold in the foreclosure: both the Meta 2 headset and its list of executives have been removed from the company’s website, leaving only tutorials and info on their software (see update).
Founded in 2012, the company ran a successful Kickstarter in 2013 for an early AR development headset. Meta then went on to raise $73 million between its Series A and Series B investments. In 2016, Meta went on to unveil the Meta 2, a tethered AR headset development kit with a wide field of view, which the company sold for $1,500.
We’ve reached out to Meta for additional comments on the shutdown, and will update when we hear back. (see update)

Headset manufacturers are notoriously secretive about sales numbers, so finding out how well one specific VR headset is doing in the marketplace at any given time can be a bit of a guessing game. Now, Fast Travel Games, the studio behind the multi-platform bow-shooter Apex Construct (2018), maintains their VR game saw a marked increase in sales on PlayStation Store as a result of strong PSVR headset adoption in 2018.
Fast Travel Games CEO Oskar Burman tweeted recently that Apex Construct derived an overall 58% of sales from PSVR, with the remaining 42% coming from both Steam (23%) and the Oculus Store (19%).
“Playstation has taken an even bigger share since last time I shared numbers, which is what to expect considering indications of strong PSVR sales in 2018,” Burman says. “But the VR market as a whole is clearly growing too. December was one of the best months ever for Apex, so my guess is a bunch of people found a new VR HMD under the christmas tree in 2018.”
Back in May, Burman tweeted that 54% of Apex Construct sales came from PC VR platforms Steam (24%) and the Oculus Store (30%) at the time, with the remaining 46% coming from the PlayStation Store.
Apex Construct, which released first on PSVR in February and a month later on PC, is a story-driven, single player action-adventure game that lets you battle enemy robots with an upgradable cyber bow & shield—all the while exploring a mysterious world that’s befallen an extinction event.
As an example for an average multi-platform VR game, it can give us a rough picture of the state of VR adoption in the absence of relevant headset sales figures. We call it ‘average’ because not only has it garnered middling user reviews, hovering around [3/5] on all supported platforms, but it also wasn’t featured in any hardware bundles either. Furthermore, it hasn’t received any content updates since June—the ‘Cygnia Cup Challenge’ update which brought a new competitive PvE mode to the game—leaving it mostly the same basic experience since it launched.

2018 Ends With a Record Number of VR Headsets on Steam
If Burman’s supposition is true, it means PSVR outperformed PC VR headsets in the latter half of 2018—understandable considering the massive price reductions we saw coming from all major headset manufacturers excluding HTC Vive, which remained at a steadfast $500.
Both Oculus and Windows VR headsets saw price reductions over the holiday season, however PSVR benefited not only from a few important hardware bundles including hit games such as Beat Saber, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and Borderlands 2 VR, it also saw a drastic $100 of price slashing across the board, bringing $350 MSRP hardware bundles to just $250.
So while only a rough idea, it seems the old adage ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’ has been especially true as of late.

If you’ve been eyeing a Windows VR headset, you’ll be interested to see the huge discounts currently available from Amazon US on most Windows VR headsets.
Updated 1/17/19
The Windows “Mixed Reality” VR headsets launched in late 2017, and today you can pick one up with some steep savings currently available from Amazon US. Here’s a quick look at each headset’s MSRP and the currently available price (brand new, including controllers):
While at least one of the Windows VR headsets from Acer, Dell, HP, or Lenovo can usually be found with a healthy discount, Samsung’s Odyssey headset—which is positioned as the premium Windows VR headset—is harder to find discounted from its $500 MSRP. The Odyssey is different from the other Windows VR headsets with best-in-class resolution of 1,600 × 1,440 and a wider field of view. The Odyssey+ is very similar to the Odyssey except for some minor tweaks and a slightly modified display which aims to reduce the ‘screen door effect’.

Watch Windows VR Controllers Stand up to 'Beat Saber's' Hardest Song
The reasoning surrounding the ongoing discounts seen on Amazon US isn’t clear—nor is it apparent if they are permanent, or how long they might last if they aren’t—but for many months now we’ve seen the headsets trade places being the cheapest, and occasional discounts from the Microsoft store have followed a similar pattern. It’s seems likely that the discounts are helping to drive the slow but steady adoption of Windows VR headsets on Steam.
When the Windows VR headsets were first announced all the way back in 2016, their ~$400 price point was mighty compelling against the then quite pricey Rift ($600) and Vive ($800). But by the time the Windows VR headsets actually made it out the door in late 2017, those incumbents had seen their own major price cuts—now with the Rift at $350 and the Vive at $500—giving the Windows VR headsets much less of an edge of price. But with the discounts available on Windows VR headsets today, they represent a rather attractive value option for new users hoping to jump into VR, especially if you’re just looking to get in on some Beat Saber.
Created by Czech Republic-based indie studio Beat Games, Beat Saber landed the top award for Sony’s ‘Best PSVR Experience’ of 2018.
Beat Saber also nearly nabbed the top spot for ‘Best Independent Game’ too, landing in second place to The Forest.
Here’s how the ‘Best PSVR Experience’ runners-up rated:
First – Borderlands 2 VR
Second – ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission
Third – Tetris Effect
Honorable mentions – Star Trek Bridge Crew: The Next Generation, and Creed: Rise to Glory
Sony’s annual GOTY awards are determined by votes cast by PlayStation blog readers, so if you don’t like the way it shook out this year, you know who to blame.
If you’re looking to launch your anger at a more definite target, you can always check out Road to VR’s 2018 Game of the Year Awards too. Spoiler alert: Beat Saber won there too (on PC).
PlayStation VR Demo Disc 3 is now available on the PlayStation Store, including demos for nine hit VR titles.
Like the previous two demo discs, the third installment is free of charge. You can check out the PlayStation Store listing here.
Games on disc three include:
ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission (JAPAN Studio)
Battlezone (Rebellion)
Headmaster (Frame Interactive)
Job Simulator (OWLCHEMY LABS)
Moss (Polyarc)
KITCHEN (Capcom CO., LTD.)
SUPERHOT VR (SUPERHOT Team)
The Persistence (Firesprite)
Thumper (Drool)
It’s been quite a while since Demo Disc 2 was released, launching on the store in November 2017. All of the games listed above seem to be repeats from disc number two and number one, excluding Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Superhot VR. Free is free though, so we’re not complaining.
In total, the number of unique titles you can play on all three discs combined is 27. Here’s the full list below:
