Prison Boss VR (2017) is a prison-themed crafting and trading game that launched on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift last August. But starting next week, PSVR owners will be able get in on the fun of clandestinely crafting tools, furniture and all sorts of things to trade your fellow inmates.
Coming December 4th to PSVR, Prison Boss VR essentially turns your room into your very own bared jail cell, replete with toilet, sink, and cupboard for hiding your rolling tobacco, papers, alcohol, self-penned erotica, and resultant stacks of money you collect along the way.
The dopey egg-shaped guards are always bounding around on patrol, so you’ll have to watch your back so they don’t bust you and take all of your hard-earned kit and cash. If you’re quick and keep your head on a swivel, you’ll be able to build your reputation, unlock new crafting items and furniture, and eventually become the prison boss.
Prison Boss VR was developed by Montréal-based indie studio Trebuchet, and currently holds a very respectable 89% rating on Steam, giving it a ‘Very Positive’ user review rating.
Sony is gearing up for the 2018 Christmas season with a new PSVR hardware bundle that’s delivering five high-profile games to Europe-based PS4 owners.
Dubbed the PlayStation VR ‘Mega Pack’, the bundle includes a PSVR headset, PS Camera, and five games: Astro Bot Rescue Mission, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Wipeout: Omega Collection, Doom VFR, and PSVR Worlds.
There’s a few caveats here; the bundle doesn’t include PS Move controllers, however all included games support DualShock 4 gamepads to some extent—an odd choice considering Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, and some of the games offered in PSVR Worlds make good use of PS Move. Also, the games included aren’t physical discs, instead delivered as voucher codes.

PlayStation Europe hasn’t mentioned pricing yet in their promo video (linked below) or via the general announce on the PS Europe blog, although Dutch/Belgian retailer GameMania is currently advertising the Mega Pack for €330.
Sony maintains that retail pricing may vary from store to store, so we’re sure to find out soon enough as the bundle launches in the UK on December 3rd, and in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland a day later.
SpicyTails, the studio behind the popular VR visual novel experience Project LUX (2018), have something to celebrate. Spice & Wolf VR, the studio’s next VR project, has smashed its goal on Japanese crowdfunding platform Campfire. Residents outside of Japan will be able pitch in too when the Kickstarter campaign goes live in early December.
Update (November 29th, 2018): Spice & Wolf VR has exceeded its ¥8,000,000 (~$70,000) funding goal within two hours of the Campfire campaign launch on Sunday. At the time of this writing, the project has garnered over ¥21,000,000 (~$185,000) through the Japan-only campaign.
SpicyTails originally planned to release their Kickstarter for non-Japan residents on November 25th, although due to some unforeseen circumstances the company has pushed it back to an early December release, or what SpicyTails says will be “next week.”
We’ll update with the relevant link when the Kickstarter goes live.
Original Article (July 16th, 2018): As first reported by Japanese VR publication MoguraVR, the project is based on the manga and anime series Spice and Wolf.
SpicyTails, an indie studio which involves original series author Isuna Hasekura, says their newest VR project will also include the anime’s original Japanese voice actors. The production staff includes original author Tsukasa Okura, character design by Ju Ayakura, 3D modeling and motion by Keisuke Sakakibara, and voice actors Ami Koshimizu (Holo) and Jun Fukuyama (Kraft).
SpicyTails say the VR experience will support Vive, Rift, and “others”, and launch sometime in 2019.
We will make "Spice & Wolf VR". It is scheduled to be released in 2019. VIVE, Rift, others!! pic.twitter.com/SYkCF6Jc13
While not much else is known about the project so far, the creators say it will be like Project LUX, which could mean it follows the latter’s multi-ending style.
Project LUX, which is available for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows VR, boasts 65 minutes of total story, and includes localization for Japanese, English, and Chinese. Project LUX currently sits at a healthy 89% positive rating on Steam and a near [4.6/5] stars on the Oculus Store.
Take a look at the teaser below to get an idea of what SpicyTails could have planned for their upcoming Spice & Wolf VR visual novel.
So you picked up shiny new PlayStation VR and you’re ready to dive into VR. Here’s our breakdown of the best PSVR games that you should definitely check out.
The 5 Best PSVR Games
5 – SUPERHOT VR
Though it was created first as a non-VR game, SUPERHOT’s unique ‘the world moves when you do’ slow motion mechanic just so happened to translate beautifully to VR. The world and everything in it is still as long as you are, but as you start to move, everything else does too, including the baddies trying to kill you. In SUPERHOT VR this creates a totally unique experience which plays somewhat like an action game, but with the ability to stop and think about your next move before you actually do it. The game encourages lots of movement and dodging, so you’ll want to maximize the size of your playspace and you’ll also want to play the game while standing.
Sci-fi shooter Farpoint was the debut game to launch with the PSVR Aim controller—an optional, first-party VR gun peripheral—so it’s no surprise that the game plays best with it. In Farpoint you’ll find yourself battling for survival on an alien planet. With strong production values, rich gunplay, and an interesting set of enemies, the game successfully melds traditional ‘space marine’ FPS fundamentals with the rich immersion that comes from playing in PSVR. Farpoint technically supports the PS4 gamepad, but we highly recommend the PSVR Aim controller for the best experience. If you’re thinking about picking up the game but don’t have a PSVR Aim controller, skip the bundle—at this point it’s usually cheaper to buy the game [Amazon] and PSVR Aim [Amazon] separately.
If you’re looking for a tactical multiplayer shooter on PSVR, this is the one. Built from the ground up for multiplayer and the PSVR Aim controller, Firewall Zero Hour delivers all the trappings you’d expect from a tactical multiplayer shooter: a gritty, contemporary setting, familiar weapons and weapon classes, and round-based 4 vs. 4 gameplay where you only get one life. It’s tense and tactical, and demands teamplay to succeed. While the game technically supports the PS4 gamepad we highly recommend the PSVR Aim controller for the best experience; especially with all the main weapons being two-handed, playing with the gamepad often feels awkward. If you’re thinking about picking up Firewall Zero Hour but don’t have PSVR Aim yet, consider picking up the game and controller bundle [Amazon], which (unlike the Farpoint bundle) is cheaper than buying them separately.
Yes, Beat Saber is a rhythm game, but even if you don’t think you like rhythm games, you deserve it to yourself to give this one a try. Where traditional rhythm games are typically about pressing buttons to a beat, Beat Saber is about moving your body in a way that turns out to be very satisfying and uniquely suited to VR. It’s very easy to play—which makes it a great game even for non-gamers or quick pass-and-play at parties—but maintains a high skill ceiling which means you can sink hours into refining your technique, and get some exercise while doing it. One warning: if you hate electronic music, Beat Saber probably isn’t for you; the game’s original soundtrack is (currently) just about entirely electronica. On the other hand, if you do like electronic music then you’re in for a treat of memorable original songs. Either way you can sample the soundtrack on Spotify.
Interestingly, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is the only sit-down gamepad-only PSVR game on our list, and yet it takes the number one spot thanks to its delivery of an expertly crafted, polished, and playable platformer that makes use of VR in unexpected ways. While it might look like ‘just a platformer’ from the outside, Astro Bot actually makes very clever use PSVR by allowing the player to interact with the main character and the world in novel and immersive ways. For instant, the PS4 gamepad is tracked in the game world and throughout the game several ‘controller gadgets’ will attach to it for your use (like a grappling hook, water cannon, or flashlight). While longer levels mean it isn’t quite as suitable for pass-and-play like Beat Saber, the game is firmly rooted in traditional platforming game design language which means even casual gamers who have never tried VR can jump right in and pick it up as they go. That’s a double-edged sword because it means family, friends, or significant others might want to steal some time in your precious headset to play.
Electronauts[our review, PC]: While it’s less of a game and more of an accessible music creativity tool, Electronauts can make anyone feel like a master DJ. If you like EDM or have any interest in mixing or making music, you’ll have a great time expressing your inner musical creativity with Electronauts.
Moss [our review]: If you liked Astro Bot, Moss should be next on your list. It’s a slightly more ‘serious’ VR platformer, but follows a similar premise of controlling a little character in a big world while occasionally interacting directly between you and the character. It’s also a rather beautiful game world worth experiencing.
Sprint Vector[our review, PC]: If you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping (and get in a some exercise to boot), definitely check Sprint Vector. This game’s totally unique movement system has you racing and flying around huge courses while managing to keep most players totally comfortable. You won’t find speed like this anywhere else on PSVR unless it’s inside of a cockpit.
PlayStation VR Worlds: Consisting of a series of polished VR experiences, PlayStation VR Worlds was originally bundled with PSVR and served as a thought-provoking sampling of where virtual reality gaming is heading. Back in its heyday it was some of the best VR content out there. Today it’s still worth checking out and having on hand as some of the best demo content for showing off PSVR to VR first-timers, especially at the excellent price of $15.
Skyrim VR [our review]: While unmistakably a port of a (great) game from 2011, if you love RPGs you’ll find no greater depth in a VR RPG today than Skyrim VR. It remains quite clunky despite being adapted in several ways for VR (including Move support for things like swinging your sword, blocking with your shield, and shooting your bow and arrow), and it isn’t easy on the eyes, but if you can overlook its flaws, the game’s sheer depth of content will keep you content in virtual Tamriel for a long time to come.
Batman Arkham VR [our review]: Something of a hidden gem from the PSVR launch era—Batman: Arkham VR was made by the same studio (Rocksteady) which developed the excellent Batman: Arkham series. And though it’s very different from those games—focusing instead on Batman’s gadgets and crime scene investigations)—it was far ahead of its time in VR game design and still represents some of the best licensed superhero content available in VR today. If you’re a fan of Batman, give this one a go.
WipEout Omega Collection[our thoughts]: Years before PSVR was released—back when it was still just a prototype called Project Morpheus—people were already fantasizing about how amazing the storied zero-G racing franchise, WipEout, could be in VR. The dream finally came true in 2017 when the WipEout Omega Collection, a remastered bundle of several WipEout games, launched with optional PSVR support, deeply enhancing the game’s adrenaline-fueled arcade racing action. Don’t push yourself though; while the VR mode has been adapted with several options to maintain comfort even at the game’s breakneck speeds, not pacing yourself could lead to nausea. Good thing there’s a free demo available to see if this one’s for you.

Vertigo Games, Innerspace and ARTE today announced that their upcoming VR puzzle adventure A Fisherman’s Tale is headed to all major VR headsets in January 2019.
We went hands-on with A Fisherman’s Tale at Gamescom this year and came away pretty impressed. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect from the studios’ charming VR puzzler:
A Fisherman’s Tale tosses you into the rubber boots of an ex-fisherman named Bob. A large storm is brewing, and it’s up to you make it to the top of the lighthouse and turn on the light, solving perspective shifting room-scale puzzles along the way.
The game uses an extremely interesting mechanic that the creators call ‘single player co-op’ which lets you hand key puzzle pieces to a miniature version of yourself in a dollhouse-size copy of the room. Look up, and you’ll see a giant version of yourself (as Bob), and look down and you’ll see a tiny Bob working away in sync with your movements.
The game is slated to support PlayStation VR, HTC VIVE, Oculus Rift and Windows VR when it launches in January. It will be priced at $15/€15.
Check out the gameplay trailer here, linked above and below.
Dreamscape Immersive, the location-based VR startup backed by some of the biggest companies in Hollywood, today announced it will be opening four US-based locations in addition to its flagship LA venue.
Until now, Dreamscape Immersive has operated pop-up venues for limited time engagements with their multiplayer VR experiences.
The company plans to bring four stand-alone and theater-based locations to Dallas/Ft. Worth, to the New York & New Jersey metro areas, and to Columbus, Ohio.
Dreamscape Immersive’s Westfield Century City Mall location is now a permanent installation. The LA location currently features three multiplayer VR experiences; Alien Zoo, The Blu: Deep Rescue, and Lavan’s Magic Projector: The Lost Pearl—all available at $20 per person for a 25 minute experience.
The company says it will soon offer five in-house developed multiplayer VR adventures.
“At its heart, Dreamscape is about merging the scope and emotional power of cinema with the pure visceral excitement of a great theme-park ride — all within a totally new VR technology that allows our audience to enter into and become part of the story,” said Walter Parkes, co-chairman of Dreamscape Immersive in a press statement.
Dreamscape Interactive’s $30 million Series B financing round, announced in September 2017, was led by AMC, and followed by investors including Steven Spielberg, 21st Century Fox, IMAX, Warner Bros., and Bold Capital Partners.
Cyan, the studio behind iconic adventure games Myst (1993) and Riven (1997), are putting their stamp of approval on a newly announced VR game from Eagre Games, a studio led by original Myst artist Chuck Carter.
Dubbed ZED, the adventure game is currently under development by Eagre Games and New England-based Skymap Games. Zed will be the first game published by Cyan Ventures, Cyan’s newly formed publishing arm.
Outside of his work on Myst, Carter has worked on 25 other games including many in the Command & Conquer series, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and Pac-Man World Rally. Carter is also known for his work on a number of non-game projects such as art for TV series Babylon5, NASA, National Geographic, and Scientific American.
To create Zed, the studios have also assembled a cast of industry talent including writers Joe Fielder (Bioshock Infinite, The Flame and the Flood) and David Chen (Metal Gear Solid series, Narcosis). Long-time games industry voice actor Stephen Russell (the Thief and Fallout series) will be lending his voice to the game.
Here’s Cyan’s description of what to expect from Zed:
ZED is the story of an aging artist, lost in regret, and the haze of dementia. Inside the dreamscape of this creative mind come undone, players reassemble the artist’s fragmented memories into a final, lasting legacy: a loving final gift to his unborn granddaughter.
Making its debut with VR support for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and non-VR support for PC, ZED is a surreal trip, with an unexpected narrative that unfolds across fanciful, fractured lands. Spanning regret, reconciliation and redemption, it’s a bittersweet story that’s both deeply personal, and undeniably universal.
Zed is slated to release in Spring 2019, targeting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and non-VR support for PC.
A Steam page is now live, although there’s no pricing information or specific release date yet.
Since the mods that enabled custom songs in Beat Saber are unofficial and community-made, they often break when there is an update to the game, causing custom songs to disappear. This guide will show you how to fix custom songs on Beat Saber after an update along with other mods. If you’ve never installed custom songs in the first place, follow this guide instead.
When a Beat Saber update breaks custom songs, it’s because the mods that enable them become incompatible until the mod creators make their own updates to account for the changes. Rest assured, all of the songs and beat maps you’ve downloaded are still there, you just can’t see them. You’ll need to wait until the mods get adjusted and then update to the latest versions before you can get custom songs on Beat Saber working again. Here’s how to do it:
With Beat Saber closed, launch BeatSaberModInstaller.exe, confirm that the game’s directory is correctly selected, then install ‘Song Loader Plugin’ and ‘BeatSaver Downloader’. If you don’t see these in the list then they have not been updated yet, check later by running Beat Saber Mod Installer at a later time.
[Optional] You can also update or install any other mods that are showing in the list (learn about what various mods do here). Run Beat Saber Mod Installer later to check for the latest plugins as they’re updated.
Once you install the updated versions of the mods you’ll find that all of your custom songs are available to play once again. Looking for some great songs to try? Check out 11 of our favorites!

You might have already splurged on Black Friday and Cyber Monday for the biggest VR deals of the season, but if you were reticent to pull out your credit card and plonk down a few hundred on that shiny new PSVR game bundle, you may want to rethink that decision with the platform’s next big offering that’s slated to launch before Christmas.
BestBuy.com is currently advertising pre-orders for a new PSVR bundle which includes the hotly awaited Borderlands 2 VR and the indie breakout hit rhythm game Beat Saber (2018).
The pre-order listing states the bundle will launch on December 14th, costing $350.
The bundle includes the PlayStation VR headset, PlayStation Camera, two PlayStation Move motion controllers, demo disc, and both Borderlands 2 VR and Beat Saber game vouchers. Sorry folks, it doesn’t appear the physical retail release is included.
It’s uncertain at the time of this writing if other retailers will carry the bundle or if it’s a Best Buy exclusive, although the deal presents even greater savings than the previously launched Creed: Rise to Glory + Superhot VR bundle, which is also regularly priced at $350.

Beat Saber launched just last week on PSVR for $30, while Borderlands 2 VR is set to cost $50 when it launches on December 14th, making the bundle a clear win over Creed: Rise to Glory and Superhot VR’s combined MSRP of $40.
If you didn’t manage to snap up a bundle at Black Friday pricing, the Borderlands 2 VR + Beat Saber offer is certainly the most attractive offer dollars-wise at this point.
Virtual Desktop (2016), the app that lets you view and use your desktop computer in VR, is finally making its way to Oculus Go and Gear VR this week. Once Oculus Quest, the company’s upcoming 6DOF headset, launches next year, a version of the app will be available then too.
Coming to the Oculus Store on November 29th, the mobile version of Virtual Desktop will let you connect your Oculus mobile headset to your computer via WiFi so you can both stream and interact with any program on your desktop.
Virtual Desktop creator Guy Godin says that like the PC version, the mobile version relies on Window’s native touch keyboard for text input, although you can connect Bluetooth mice, keyboards and gamepads to flush out the functionality of the experience. Of course, you can use your single Oculus Go or Gear VR controller to interact with screens like a mouse as well.
Godin further says in a Reddit post that the app’s overall streaming latency is 20ms plus your individual network latency. “I wouldn’t play competitive CS:Go but it’s not bad otherwise. Bluetooth peripherals have a bit more latency because of the bad Android Bluetooth stack but the Go controller is quite good (Oculus wrote their own for it). A wired mouse (with OTG dongle) would probably be the best,” he says.

For the best streaming quality and latency, Godin suggests connecting to a wired computer via a 5 GHz WiFi router. Users will also be able to connect to up to four computers so you can switch between them on the fly, and also via the Internet so you can connect remotely.
The mobile version does present a few notable limitations at the moment. Since neither Oculus Go or Gear VR has a GPU capable of rendering multiple monitors at high quality, you’ll only be able to stream one monitor at a time, negating a virtual multiple monitor setup. “I will be adding the ability to cycle through your monitors in the near future. Mac support is planned, just don’t know when this will happen however,” Godin says.

Before the turkey-induced coma sets in on the big day and everyone settles down for football, board games, or spirited arguments over lifestyle choices, the VR evangelist in you probably wants to show off your new headset to your extended family this year. Here’s the best VR content that should delight your sweet granny Mabel, stubborn Aunt Cathy, your annoying little cousin Skippy McDingus, and everyone in between.
When showing off to family, the key to an enjoyable time is getting them in quick and not overwhelming with complicated controls, so pretty much anything with artificial locomotion should probably be reserved for the gamers among the group. Whatever the genre, there’s a few fast and hard rules to go by too: keep it relatively short, make sure the display is mirrored on a big TV so everyone can watch, and let everyone know that they could get a controller to the jaw if they don’t respect the playspace. Also, please keep your four-legged friends and toddlers out from underfoot.
There’s a lot of cross over this time around since last year, so we’ve lumped Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PSVR into one family friendly list. You’ll find Oculus Go, Gear VR, and Google Daydream further below too:
Rift, Vive & PSVR
Job Simulator
What: It’s an oldie (relatively speaking) but a goodie for VR first-timers, and if your friends and family have never had a chance to pop into VR, Job Simulator (2016) might do well to whet some virtual appetites as you serve up char-grilled burgers to smack-talking robots, toss things around, and generally have a laugh or two.
Who: This is the poster child for ‘family friendly VR game’, so everyone, including gam gam or grandpa, can easily pop in to see what that weird face-Nintendo you brought over is all about. Hilarity ensues.
How long: 5 – 10 minutes per person
Why: Job Simulator is a great point of entry for almost anyone, as it’s easy to pick up and doesn’t focus on complicated controls. The charm of making crazy things and tossing staplers at robots can wear thin quickly though. If you only have one big chance to impress the group, you may want to skip this one and head down the list.
What: Take Dance Dance Revolution and cross-breed it with Fruit Ninja, and you’ll have Beat Saber (2018). There’s a reason why Beat Saber climbed to the top of the charts when it launched into Early Access this Spring: it’s incredibly addictive, and seems to check the “wow, I’m totally in the future!” box that you definitely want to hit when showing off to VR newcomers.
Who: Everyone, even the couch potatoes of the family, will want to get up and dance and slice blocks to the beat. Thankfully there’s plenty of difficulty settings to satisfy even the most musically disinclined.
Howlong: 5 – 15 minutes per person
Why: Most songs last around five minutes, but you’re bound to encounter failures along the way, and also family members that just can’t help themselves for a second go at another song.
What: CREED: Rise to Glory (2018) is a highly polished arcade boxing game that puts you in the shoes of Adonis Creed, the protagonist of CREED (2016) and CREED II (2018). Punch, punch, punch, block and dodge.
Who: This may attract everyone, although make sure your family member is physically fit enough to go the distance for a full match.
Howlong: 5 – 10 minutes
Why: Freeplay matches against AI can last anywhere from 2 – 5 minutes, but depending on how much fun everyone is having, this might be a good opportunity to let your family members really flaunt their dodging and punching prowess for a few sessions.
What: Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (2015) is the quintessential VR party game that puts one player in the VR hot seat, and leaves everyone else on the couch with a complicated manual instructing them how to disarm a life-threatening bomb. Only the VR player can see what’s going on though; team work makes the dream work.
Who: Everyone, although little Skippy McDingus could feel a bit left out if he can’t keep up with the instructions.
Howlong: 15 – 45 minutes
Why: This is one of those games that catches on quick, and gets everyone involved. Keeping one player in the headset for a longer amount of time than usual can still result in plenty of gaffs and laughs as the whole family blows up miserably, or disarms the bomb for victory.
What: Insanely stylish, easy to pick up and play, Superhot VR (2017) tosses a little time-bending cartoon violence your family’s way that shouldn’t receive too many odd glances from the older generation.
Who: Younger, more game-savvy players are sure to love the concept, letting them live out their dreams of being an action hero. The concept is simple and slow enough to get anyone in the mood to punch some red crystal dudes in the face.
Howlong: 5 – 10 minutes
Why: A single stage can go by pretty quickly. It may be best to do a round-robin style match that lets everyone have a go when one player fails a level, or relegate a person to two to three of the smaller sections a piece.
Space Pirate Trainer– Han Solo doesn’t have anything on your Aunt Cathy. While it’s fundamentally just a wave shooter, it’s by far one of the best looking and best feeling out there. Oculus, Steam, PlayStation Store
ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission – Maybe not great for the crowd-pleasing wow factor, but after you show off some of the fan favorites above you might park a few more of your curious family members in a chair and let them experience the best platformer PSVR has to offer. PlayStation Store
Google Earth VR – The controls may take some explaining, but giving a loved one the opportunity to travel, especially if they aren’t physically able, is going to really be a special moment. Travel the sights and revisit distant places you never thought you’d see again in the flesh. Oculus and Steam
Coco VR – Pixar’s first VR experience is absolutely astounding. Ideal for the first timer of any age, the experience can last anywhere from 15-30 minutes per player. Oculus and Revive for Vive
The Lab – Valve’s collection of mini-games and photogrammetry scenes are top-notch, and warrant more than just a few minutes of you time to explore ever single bit of what’s on offer. Kids and adults a like will love the Longbow, Core Calibration, and Xortex. Steam
Oculus Go & Gear VR
Oculus Go and Gear VR are a bit tricky. As more of a personal media device, you’re likely better off trying to communicate the headset’s wide range of possibilities than dialing into the platform’s vast library of mobile VR games. You’ll probably have to cut off some family members at the pass and explain that it’s a seated experience and not standing, so designate a place to sit and wow them with a good mix of apps and games.
Oculus Venues – Plonking down a first-timer in the stands of a massive auditorium is a surefire way to elicit a few exclamatory “oooohs” and “aaaahs”. Explain that you can hang out with friends and watch live sporting events, comedy shows, and movie nights put on by Lionsgate Films.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes – The same fun as the PC VR version, but built for mobile devices. Just make sure to print out the instruction manual beforehand.
Thumper – A rhythm game that puts you in control of a futuristic space beetle, replete with a bumping beat and fast action.
Netflix VR – Same basic effect as Oculus Venues, but you’re sure to get a few solid “You mean this thing has Netflix?!” Yes. Yes, it does.
Coco VR – While not really a quick, pass-around-able app, you’ll want your family to stick their heads into one of the highest-quality VR apps out there, which takes you to the mystical underworld of Pixar’s animated film Coco.
You can find plenty more on the Oculus Store for Go and Gear VR, including a bunch of free games and experiences worth diving into.
Daydream
Like Oculus Go and Gear VR, Daydream is probably best thought of as a media device more so than a VR gaming headset. There’s plenty of great stuff on Google Play for Daydream though.
Netflix VR – Yes, you can hypothetically watch Netflix on the toilet on your own private big screen TV. Yes, I have hypothetically done that (hypothetically).
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes – The same fun as the PC VR version, but built for mobile devices. Just make sure to print out the instruction manual beforehand.
Google Street View – A trip down memory lane can get all sorts of long-unused neurons firing again. Take granny to her old house from the ’70s and let her relive the past, or plonk her down in front of the Eiffel Tower for a trip abroad. It’s not in 3D, but it’s still pretty neat.
Mekorama VR – A quiet puzzler, Mekorama VR tasks you with guiding a wibbly little robot pal through a series of 3D puzzles – of course with ever-increasing difficulty.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them– While pretty thin in the gameplay department, the overall “wow” effect is big with this little Harry Potter Universe game that lets you explore the film’s world and even do a little magic too.

HTC’s Vive Wireless Adapter released for $300 back in late September for Vive and Vive Pro, but some users running AMD Ryzen CPUs who’ve had issues with the wireless adapter are now being urged to return their unit, as HTC is still figuring out what went wrong and how to fix it.
“We have seen and are actively looking into multiple reports of Ryzen incompatibility with Vive Wireless Adapter,” the company writes in a recent blog post. “Our current data shows this is occurring with a subset of Ryzen-based PCs. Our investigation will take time as we are working with multiple component manufacturers to identify the root cause.”
The issue, affecting some Ryzen users, appears to serve up a nasty bluescreen on the headset, something that isn’t cleared up after rebooting or any other trick known at this time.
Pending a software fix, HTC is urging affected users to return the units in the meantime—possibly a sign that the Ryzen issues goes deeper than anticipated.
Starting today, HTC says they’ll be honoring Ryzen-related returns from retail partners and vive.com “outside of typical return windows.” After contacting customer service, users will be asked to certify their system’s components and proof of purchase of the Vive Wireless Adapter.
The company says that moving forward they’ll be making sure users know some Ryzen PCs have unresolved compatibility issues.

Indie VR title Vanishing Realms brought Zelda-esque room-scale RPG action to the Vive all the way back at the headset’s April 2016 launch. The game is one of the top rated titles on SteamVR, but remains in Early Access more than two and a half years later. Communication from the title’s sole indie developer have been extremely sparse, but a fresh update today affirmed that work is ongoing and aims to bring major changes to the game… eventually.
Update (November 16, 2018): Some 10 months after the last substantial communication, Vanishing Realms developer Kelly Bailey today offered a fresh status update on the Early Access project, affirming that work continues on the title, including what sound like forthcoming significant changes to the overall shape of the game. Specifically, Bailey says that he’s been working hard to move from a purely linear to a more open world gameplay experience.
“This feels like the most challenging game design task I’ve ever worked on. Sticking with exclusively linear design would be significantly easier, but I am just personally fascinated by the sense of exploration in larger outdoor fantasy landscapes in VR,” he writes in the update. “I’ve spent tons of time working on this, and I’m tentatively optimistic.”
What’s more, Bailey has been spending time overhauling the game’s melee combat to feel more reactive and immersive. A physics-based animation system has been in the works, which could allow players to, for example, use a weapon to push an enemy’s shield out of the way to create an opening for attack in the midst of combat.
While Bailey says it wasn’t his intention to let the game linger in Early Access for so long, he has come to deeply embrace the designation—to the dismay of some fans.
“Over time, I’ve come to realize that early access lets me feel it’s ok to continue to try significant experiments with the design and tech, and attempt new things that I would likely avoid if the game were ‘finished’. I really value that creative and technical freedom, and I think early access remains an appropriate label to describe how I’m treating the code base and design.”
Ultimately he says writing of new code is winding down, and most of his development lately has been focused on building out content with the tools and systems that he’s created. As ever, he’s not willing to even hint at a timeline for when fans can experience the game’s forthcoming third chapter, and we’d have to guess that 2018 is off the table by now. But, he assures, work continues, and he has no intention of abandoning the project.
Original Article (July 2nd, 2018): Kelly Bailey is the brains and sole developer behind Vanishing Realms: Rite of Steel, and a former Valve employee who worked on the Half-Life series. His indie VR title has been praised for its embodied room-scale VR gameplay. The title comprises the first two chapters of Bailey’s vision, while a third chapter has been on the roadmap for some time.
The game’s last substantial update came in September 2017, in which Bailey said an upgrade to the game engine “will allow the world of Vanishing Realms to expand in the future, enabling the possibility of a more open-world game design.” But since then there’s only been one minor update to the game in January of this year, and little communication from Bailey about the state of of the game’s development.
However, he recently made a rare appearance on the game’s Steam forum, responding to a player asking if Vanishing Realms had been abandoned, and affirmed that he’s still working on the title.
“Hi the_immortal, additional content for the game is still in the works, albeit ridiculously slowly.”
It’s a minor but meaningful glimmer of hope for the game’s fans, many of whom say Vanishing Realms ranks among their top VR titles to date.

Vanishing Realms Review
Bailey is up front about the pace of the game’s development, saying back in 2017, “as it required over 2,500 hours of dev time to create ch1 & ch2, I’ve concluded it’s quite beyond me to accurately estimate a delivery date for new chapters!”
The last time he talked about the title’s roadmap was back in September 2016, where he promised that the game would come out of early access and eventually see a third chapter of content, likely deployed as DLC. As far as we know, those plans are unchanged, but as Bailey says, he’s become hesitant to commit to any specific timeline.
