Step Inside the Unabomber Investigation in New Interactive VR Experience
If you were alive in the ’90s, chances are you’ve heard about Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber, the American domestic terrorist that between 1978 and 1995 killed 3 people, and injured 23 others in a nationwide bombing campaign. Now, HTC Vive Studios and The Newseum, an interactive news museum in Washington, D.C., have come together to produce a VR experience detailing the Unabomber case, which features an interactive inside look at Kaczynski’s infamous Montana cabin where he planned his bombings.
According to HTC’s blogpost, Unabomber: The Virtual Reality Experience not gives you an inside look at the same cabin that officials found in 1996, but lets you “actively participate in the case and get a front row seat to the process that led to Kaczynski’s arrest.”
The experience features insights from FBI agents Terry Turchie, who served as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the UNABOM investigation from 1994 to 1998, and Max Noel, an FBI agent during the investigation.
“Being in the cabin and looking out at the woods, and that first time you’re on the snow and you’re looking it – that’s just amazing,” said Turchie. “It almost looks exactly like the day we [first came upon the cabin].”
The Newseum, which actually has the original Unabomber cabin in their exhibition, will also be featuring the VR experience in an effort to better ‘cement’ all of the information presented there.
The app is now available on Viveport for $5, and will eventually make its way to Steam “at a later time.”

‘Sprint Vector’ Gets February 8th PC Launch Date, Feb 13th for PSVR
Having just celebrated a successful closed beta, which showed off some of the game’s new mechanics and solo challenge mode, Survios now says its infectious footracer Sprint Vector is set to launch on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift on February 8th. PlayStation VR players will have to wait until February 13th to join in the fun.
Sprint Vector features a unique locomotion system, which Survios dubs ‘Fluid Locomotion’. By pumping your arms, you generate forward motion, much like a skier might when using ski polls. But it’s not just about skating your way to the finish; you have to jump, climb, drift, fling, and fly at speeds that on paper sound impossible in VR. We’ve followed Sprint Vector since it was first revealed back at GDC last year, and can attest to just how comfortable the high-speed racing experience really is.
Much like the Mario Kart franchise, Sprint Vector features power-ups like weapons, traps, and nitro to keep things interesting; although you’d be forgiven if you forgot all about it while desperately pumping your arms, tossing yourself 30 feet into the air and flying to hit that critical speed boost to inch you into first place.
The closed beta only featured a fraction of the game’s content, so here’s a full list of the game’s features:
- Competitive multiplayer matches: Public and private online multiplayer modes pit up to eight players against each other in intense, high-speed races as you vie for a spot on the Global Leaderboards.
- 12 competitive race tracks: Scale towering pyramids and plunge into alien ruins, leap across bottomless pits while dodging debilitating blobs of sludge, or survive the trap-riddled streets of an ancient city. A dozen complex race courses full of obstacles, alternate paths, and game-changing power-ups make for endless replay value.
- Customizable solo play: Run the course at your own pace and learn the ropes with customizable solo game settings.
- Nine challenge courses: Take on these diabolical courses designed to test your sprinting prowess to the extreme. Tackle three specific challenges across nine single-player challenge courses with Local and Global Leaderboards.
- Eight intergalactic competitors: Choose from eight colorful characters pulled from every corner of the galaxy, from notorious street artist Daxx to ethereal Luna to streetwise hammerhead Hendrix, each with multiple skins to unlock.
- Power-ups galore: Utilize a wide range of power-ups, from explosive proximity mines to nitro speed and racer-seeking rockets, to gain an advantage over the competition.
Survios also tells us that a cosmetic skin pack will be available to all PC racers free of charge, which are said to have an “international spin just in time for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.” These international-inspired skins represent 16 countries and are available across all eight playable characters.

Google ‘Blocks’ Update Matures Tools for Even Easier 3D Modeling in VR
Google Blocks, the 3D object creation tool for VR/AR app developers, just got a big update that includes new environments, improved object snapping, and a number of experimental features that the company says makes Blocks “more powerful and even easier to use.”
Released to Rift and Vive users for free back in July, Google intended the creation experience in Blocks be more akin to playing with children’s blocks than working with traditional 3D modeling software like Z-Brush or Blender. Giving you a simple set of shapes, a color palette, and a number of simple tools, the user can easily create objects from within VR that you can then export to a standard OBJ file for inclusion in other 3D creation software.
Now, Google has added a few more features to make creation a little more hassle free.
Background environments now include a night version of the desert environment, and also plain white and black background options. An improved snapping function has also been included, which the company says address the “often unpredictable or difficult to control” snapping tool from the previous build. The company says they’ve “vastly improved [their] snapping algorithm and introduced a brand new user experience to guide you.”
Google has also added a host of experimental features, many of which are responses to user requests. For more information on how to use each tool, check out Google’s official blog post announcing the update.
New Features
- Non-coplanar face mode: Now you can enable non-coplanar faces to avoid creation of extra triangles.
- Loop subdivide: Subdivision can be a really powerful tool. It’s even more powerful if you can cut a loop around an entire mesh. With loop subdivide enabled, simply long press on the trigger while subdividing to see a perfect subdivision loop form around your object.
- Edge, Face and Vertex Deletion: With this feature enabled, you can use the eraser tool to delete a single edge, face or vertex. We’ll “collapse” the mesh based on the edge, face or vertex you delete.
- Worldspace grids: This feature will show grids along every side of your worldspace. The grid units are equivalent to the actual worldspace grid units, so you can precisely measure and place objects along the grids.
- Volume insertion ruler: This experimental feature allows you to enable a ruler when you are inserting a mesh. As you insert the object, you’ll see relative measurements in meters appear on each axis so you can precisely and accurately measure every object relative to the others.
- Expanded mesh wireframe: When reshaping a mesh you see a helpful wireframe around the section of the mesh you are reshaping. Now, you can turn that wireframe on for the entire mesh.
- Stepwise selection undo: You can now undo and redo steps in your multi-selection. You can use the undo and redo buttons on your non-dominant controller to undo or redo the selection of objects in order.
Check out Google Blocks on Oculus Home (Rift) and Steam (Vive and Rift).

Indie VRMMO ‘OrbusVR’ Now on Oculus Home and Steam With Cross Play
OrbusVR, the indie VR MMORPG, is now on Oculus Home, allowing for crossplay between it and the Steam version which launched last month.
The Steam version of OrbusVR has had support for both Vive and Rift when it started out in Early Access in December, but now Rift users looking to keep their games all in one place can get in on the quest-driven MMO too.
The result of a successful Kickstarter back in March 2017 which garnered $34,000, OrbusVR is shaping up to be one of the first ‘native VR’ MMORPGs to combine traditional sword and sorcery elements like quests and dungeons in a cooperative, social VR space.
Like most MMOs, you’ll need to team up with others to take down World Bosses and clear out the game’s many dungeons (hence the social VR aspect). Presenting an open world environment, OrbusVR promises “dozens of hours of quests following an intriguing story.”
Although admittedly less than ‘massive’ at the moment—Steam Spy reported a couple hundred hourly concurrent users before the its launch on Oculus Home—the game’s first content expansion is due soon, which will include a new World Boss and an end-game dungeon called the ‘Tradu Mines’. According to the lead developer Riley Dutton, the Tradu Mines “have been tuned so that they can be accomplished by a group of Level 20 characters with Rare-level gear.”
OrbusVR is now available in Early Access for $40 on Steam (Vive, Rift) and Oculus Home (Rift).

A Glimpse of the New Vive Pro Controllers & SteamVR Tracking 2.0 Base Stations
While HTC is planning to launch the Vive Pro headset itself starting in Q1, the full package including the headset, controllers, and new SteamVR Tracking 2.0 base stations won’t come until later in the year. Until then, here’s a glimpse that comes to us from Alvin Wang Graylin, HTC’s Vive China president, who recently took the kit to a Vive developer meetup in the region.
While the Vive Pro’s increase resolution is its headline feature for most, lurking underneath those iconic dots covering the headset and controllers are new sensors supporting SteamVR Tracking 2.0. The new 2.0 tracking is said to be better in several ways, including support for even larger playspaces of up to 33 × 33 feet if you link four of them together. While the Vive Pro headset and controllers are backwards compatible with 1.0 base stations (that ship with the original Vive), you won’t see the major benefits of 2.0 without the 2.0 base stations (which won’t be available until later this year, and won’t be backwards compatible with the original Vive).
The new wand controllers appear largely the same as before, save for the 2.0 sensors. We learned earlier this month that HTC is not planning to launch the Vive Pro with Valve’s highly anticipated Knuckles controllers.
HTC told us then that the controllers would be “refreshed,” which we hoped would mean more than merely swapping out the new sensors, though there’s not much evidence of external change here (I’m still holding out hope that the grip buttons have been made easier to press and hold). We were able to confirm that the controllers pictured are indeed sporting the 2.0 sensors, but we’re still awaiting confirmation that they represent the final design.

Studio Behind ‘SUPERHOT’ Looking for More VR Developers
It’s amazing how well SUPERHOT (2016), the unforgettably stylized action game, worked when translated to virtual reality. Now, the developers at SUPERHOT Team are looking to get more hands on deck as they dive deeper into the world of VR development.
Once the developer relations guru at Oculus, Callum Underwood has since moved on to work as somewhat of a talent scout at indie games publisher Raw Fury. Making his way over to the Superhot Team’s HQ, Underwood tweeted out to his followers, many of whom continue to follow from his days at Oculus, that the Polish indie devs were “looking to hire some more VR developers.”
Hello VR Twitter! It’s been a while :) My friends at the SUPERHOT HQ are looking to hire some more VR developers because the rest went on a spiritual journey and might never come back. If you are an artist or programmer and <3 VR and SUPERHOT y’all can DM me :) 🤓
— Callum Underwood (@DevRelCallum) January 24, 2018
While Underwood alludes to the fact that many have left the studio on their own “spiritual journey[s] and might never come back,” it means the Superhot devs are still dedicating resources to VR development—a good sign coming from the team that produced our 2017 HTC Vive Game of the Year.

Light Field Labs Announces $7 Million Investment to Develop Light Field Displays
Light Field Lab, a company founded by ex-Lytro veterans, announced the successful completion of a $7 million seed funding round that will help the company further develop a light field-based holographic display. The seed round was led by Khosla Ventures and Sherpa Capital, with participation by R7 Partners.
The display, the company says, will enable photo-real objects to appear as if they are floating in space without the aid of eye wear. More importantly, the technology, which the company calls a “full parallax holographic display,” is said to be capable of serving up light field objects to several people simultaneously, all from the viewers’ own unique position relative to the display itself.
According to Venture Beat, current display prototypes measure at six inches by four inches, but the modules intended for production will be scaled up to two feet by two feet. Light Field Lab CEO and founder Jon Karafin says that eventually many of these TV set-style displays could be stitched together in order to produce high-resolution holograms that could fill larger spaces, something on the order of 100-feet wide screens.
“Projecting holograms is just the beginning,” said Karafin. “We are building the core modules to enable a real-world Holodeck. The strategic guidance offered by our investors is critical to enable these breakthrough technologies.”
Light Field Lab says that future releases of the technology will allow users to touch and interact with holographic objects, something that could be accomplished by volumetric haptics, a method for creating three-dimensional haptic shapes in mid-air using focused ultrasound.
According to a Variety report, Light Field Lab will have a public debut at the National Association of Broadcasters Show (NAB Show) in Las Vegas next week.

Lytro Picks up Limitless Team to Build Tools to Work With Light-fields in Game Engines
Limitless, a company developing content and tools for creating cinematic VR experiences, has joined Lytro to build out tools for combining light-fields and real-time rendering directly in game engines.
As we noted recently, Lytro is positioning its light-field tech as VR’s master capture format. As the company is building pipelines—like Immerge and Volume Tracer—for capturing live action light-fields and generating entirely synthetic ones, the natural next step is for the company to allow easy combinations of the two, as well as real-time computer graphics.
In taking that next step, Lytro has welcomed the team from Limitless into the company. Limitless was behind narrative VR content like Reaping Rewards, which was built on a toolset designed to make it possible to animate on the fly, directly inside of VR. Now part of Lytro, the Limitless team is helping to build out the company’s game engine toolset, which Lytro says will allow users to seamlessly blend light-fields with real-time rendered content.
With integrations in the works for both Unity and Unreal Engine, Lytro’s goal is to make it easy for their customers to leverage the advantages of light-fields without giving up the advantages that come with real-time rendered content—namely, interactivity.
Light-fields are capable of capturing high-quality real-time volumetric video, or high-quality pre-rendered CGI visuals that go far beyond what can be rendered in real-time. The downside is that, because light-fields are pre-captured or pre-rendered, they can’t change in response to input, which means they can’t support the level of interactivity that real-time rendered content can—like, for instance, throwing a ball in an arbitrary direction and having it bounce off the floor, or rendering a character which can react to the user’s actions. That is to say—light-fields can work great for some things, but not everything.
Lytro wants to eliminate the need to choose between the quality of light-fields and the interactivity of real-time rendering by letting developers use the two interchangeably in a single project. In a recent meeting with Lytro, I got to see this in action—the company pulled their Hallelujah light-field into Unity as a point-cloud, and proceeded to modify the look of the scene using controls directly inside of Unity.
Beyond just playing with the color and lightning of the light-field scene, they showed how real-time elements could interact directly with the scene by throwing a bunch of beach balls around and adding real-time fog. They also showed simple but practical uses of working with a light-field in a game engine, like being able to easily composite text directly in the environment, mask out portions of the light-field scene, edit the scene’s playback, and combine multiple light-field scenes together.
While this is certainly a boon for VR storytellers already used to building experiences in game engines, these new game engine integrations seem sure to pique the curiosity of VR game developers too, who could find novel ways to combine the best of both the light-field and real-time to create an experience with both ultra high fidelity and immersive interactivity.
Lytro is still only making their tools available to those collaborating with the company directly, but if you’ve got an interesting project idea they encourage creators to get in touch.

Plex Media Server Now Lets Daydream Users Watch in VR, Including Social Viewing
Plex, the media server software that lets you stream your own video, music, and photos to a bevy of devices, is coming to VR with its latest Daydream app, Plex VR.
On top of letting you stream any content stored on your Plex media server, the app features interactive environments and social viewing with 3D avatars. At the time of this writing, environments include a luxury apartment, a space-based ‘Void’ theater, and a traditional drive-in theater.
The drive-in theater is for Plex Premium members only however, a subscription service that lets you additionally record TV for free over the air, sync your media for offline viewing, enable parental controls, and have ‘enhanced’ media playback.
In the VR app, you can resize and reposition content windows, bookmark a show by creating interactive magazine-like objects, and view 3D and 360 video. More importantly, you can pop into a friend’s media server and watch their locally-store content with them—sort of like popping over to a friend’s house to watch their TV.
You can download the new Plex app through the Daydream Store, or get Plex VR on Google Play.

Oculus-funded VR Experience ‘SPHERES’ Sold at Sundance in “Seven-Figure Deal”
SPHERES, a three-chapter space experience from Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, was just bought by VR finance and distribution firm CityLights in what Variety describes as a “seven-figure deal.”
While the respective companies are remaining mum on the exact price of the acquisition, the Variety report maintains the deal was in “the low- to mid-seven figures.”
Songs Of Spacetime, the first chapter of Spheres, debuted at Sundance as a part of Oculus’ five funded experiences.
Written and directed by Eliza McNitt, Spheres is an experience that explores sound while taking you to the heart of a black hole. Speaking to Oculus in a recent ‘VR Visionaries’ profile, McNitt called Spheres a story about “the human connection to the cosmos,” and how we relate to the sound of the universe—gravitational waves.
“…as I dove into research and the science behind the project, I learned that the discovery of gravitational waves won the Nobel in physics, so that was a huge part of the development of this project. I wanted to capture the most cutting-edge scientific discovery, and, in fact, that was this idea of sound. The title is inspired by the ancient philosophical theory called the Music of the Spheres, that predicted that celestial bodies created a form of music—and we truly did prove that with the discovery of gravitational waves.
Spheres is also packed with talent, with narration by Jessica Chastain (The Martian, Interstellar, The Zookeeper’s Wife) and music by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of electronica band Survive (The Stranger Things theme song).
“We’re incredibly excited to work with Eliza and the entire team on Spheres,” CityLights co-founder Joel Newton told Variety. “The ambition and generative nature of the vision for Spheres perfectly fits with our mission to bring content to broader audiences and showcase the types of experiences only VR can deliver.”
Spheres is slated to arrive on Rift in the coming months, with a launch on other VR platforms to follow.

Pimax “8K” Headset Kickstarter Deliveries Delayed to Q2
Following their appearance with a new “8K” prototype at CES 2018, Pimax’s latest update says that backers won’t see their finished headsets until Q2, delaying the initially expected delivery date by several months.
Pimax ran an awfully successful Kickstarter for the “8K” headset back in 2017, concluding the crowdfunding campaign with some $4.2 million in funding. The company quickly thereafter announced a $15 million Series A investment for continued development of the headset, which aims to deliver an ultrawide field of view and high resolution.
While the first wave of “8K” headsets were estimated to begin delivery to backers in January, 2018, Pimax’s latest update to backers pushes the headset’s estimated delivery into Q2 (April–June).
Currently, taking into account the fixes for the final version, we are now looking at a delivery window of Q2. So we’re certainly getting there! We will continue to offer you more frequent updates as we pass those milestones and tweak towards our final version. We are so grateful for the feedback you’ve given us, and for the patience, you’ve shown in allowing us the time to really hone Pimax 8K to be the best it can be.
We do understand that our initial estimate for delivery was perhaps generous, and for this we sincerely apologize. It’s been very encouraging to hear from press and community that have tested the latest version, and that they feel we’re almost there, but we of course know we’ve got a lot of work to put in over the coming weeks. We don’t want to let you down on final build quality, so we’re back at the grindstone, and as M1 becomes available, we’ll have an even clearer idea of our trajectory, which we will of course share with you ASAP.
The update also offers a timeline of the company’s various prototypes over the last year, and says that, starting in mid-March, they expect to begin showing the ‘M1’ (the “close-to-mass production unit”) and working with a “small, closed group from the community” to test the headset and gather feedback ahead of the final production unit.
Delays for Kickstarter projects involving hardware manufacturing are not uncommon, so we’re not surprised to see Pimax push back their estimated delivery date. In fact, in our breakdown of the most important stories at CES 2018, we figured as much:
If Pimax plans to meet the quality bar set by headsets like the Rift and Vive, we don’t expect to see the headset launch before mid-2018, in order to give the company time to finalize their design, tune up outstanding issues, and sort out manufacturing issues which always seem to crop up during initial production. Kickstarter backers of the headset could see beta/prototype versions delivered in small batches prior to mid-2018, however it’ll likely take some back and forth between backers and Pimax before the headset is truly ready for open sale.
The question now is whether or not the company can iron out the kinks we noted in our CES 2018 hands on, and do it in time for their new Q2 delivery window.

Gear VR Space Dogfighter ‘End Space’ to Arrive on Rift Tomorrow, Vive Support to Follow
Orange Bridge Studios today announced that End Space (2017), the single-player space dogfighter for Gear VR, is headed to Oculus Rift January 25th. The Steam version for HTC Vive and Rift is slated to arrive sometime next month.
Orange Bridge says the Rift and Vive version will be an “expanded, remastered and enhanced version,” and will arrive with new content, better visuals, and new motion controller-based flight systems.
The single player game puts you in the cockpit of an advanced Minos Starfighter, where you battle your way through campaign mode on your quest to control the Tartarus Sector. Orange Bridge says the game’s story-driven space combat harks back to classics like Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994) and Wing Commander (1990).
End Space supports a variety of controllers, including gamepads, motion controllers, and HOTAS. In addition, Orange Bridge has made their gaze-assisted flight mode default, something studio head Justin Wasilenko describes as “kind of like Eagle Flight, but with lasers attached to your hand.”
Seeing a bump in graphical fidelity, both Rift and Vive editions will feature “higher resolution models and textures, increased shadow quality and post processing effects like Ambient Occlusion, Bloom, & ACES color grading.” Wasilenko says environmental updates including planetary surface animations have also been added.
End Space will be available for $15 on Oculus Home on January 25th and on Steam in early February. Keep an eye on the Rift version here. You can also keep on the Vive version here.

Wargaming to Develop ‘World of Tanks VR’ for VR Arcades
Wargaming—the company behind free-to-play titles World of Tanks (2010), World of Warplanes (2013), and World of Warships (2015)—has announced development of a new title, World of Tanks VR, under development for deployment into VR arcades.
While the original World of Tanks itself isn’t getting VR support (at least for now), the company has announced the formation of Neurogaming, a new VR studio that’s a joint venture between Wargaming and VRTech, a Russia-based VR developer.
As part of its work on CinemaVR, a “scalable, location-based entertainment VR solution focused on session-based multiplayer and co-op games,” which will be offered as white-label VR arcade for those who want to operate their own business, Neurogaming is developing World of Tanks VR, which will be offered through the CinemaVR locations.
World of Tanks VR is based on the World of Tanks IP, but as we understand, it will be an entirely separate game that’s specially designed for location-based VR arcades.
“With location-based VR, we make the experience more affordable and accessible,” says Slava Makarov, World of Tanks creator and strategic advisor of Neurogaming. “Moreover, unlike any other developer, our biggest aim is to change the experience from one-time involvement to a long-term engaging story with co-op and competitive elements.”
Nerogaming is also undertaking the development of VRTech’s Polygon VR platform, a VR attraction offering full-body immersion similar to The VOID, Zero Transform, and others.

‘Cubism’ Aims to Artfully Tickle Your Brain With Its Solid Dissection Puzzles, Demo Now Available
Cubism is an upcoming VR puzzle game from indie developer Thomas Van Bouwel that challenges you to think in 3 dimensions. Inspired by puzzles like the Soma cube, or a cube composed of smaller Tetris-like geometric pieces, Cubism tasks players with assembling increasingly complex shapes in what results in a real brain teaser.
First announced a month ago, Van Bouwel has now published a working demo of Cubism, which gives you a quick slice of the sort of difficulty ahead.
Starting out with basic ‘flat’ geometry, you soon encounter interesting jaggy 3D shapes and hole-filled messes that start to take a toll on whatever primordial part of your brain is tasked with processing colorful Duplo blocks.
The control scheme is intuitive, mapping a button that magnetically assembles the blocks nearby, something that makes picking them up from the zero-G environment and clicking them into their spots an easy affair. You can also move the wire structure and turn it to get a better sense of where the next block should go.
After playing for about 15 minutes and taking off the headset, I noticed a sort of 3D version of the ‘Tetris Syndrome’, the unique effect that occurs when you finish playing a round of Tetris and your brain is still engaged in placing blocks (despite the Game Boy being stashed in your nylon, neon book bag). The effect wore away after a few minutes, but it was interesting to note that I was now ‘thinking in 3D’.
Cubism is currently still under development, and is slated to release sometime in 2018 with support for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and all Windows MR Headsets. The demo, which works with SteamVR-compatible headsets, can be downloaded here.

AltspaceVR CEO Eric Romo Joins Facebook’s Social VR Team
Eric Romo, co-founder and CEO of AltspaceVR, is joining Facebook’s Social VR team.
Following financial difficulties, which almost saw the complete shut down of the social VR app, AltspaceVR found new life when it was acquired by Microsoft back in October.
Romo, who founded AltspaceVR in January 2013, will be moving to the role of Director of Product at Facebooks’s Social VR team, the group behind Facebook Spaces.
Romo shares his thoughts in a Facebook post announcing the news:
“As I look back at my journey with AltspaceVR, I couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished. We built one of the first and most vibrant places to meet in VR — starting before the first consumer headsets even shipped! But it’s really the community of passionate people that has grown around AltspaceVR that amazes me most, and continues to confirm my belief that being together with others in VR will revolutionize the way we connect with each other. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I left AltspaceVR with confidence that the team is well-placed to continue pushing forward the promise of virtual communication as part of the Microsoft mixed reality ecosystem. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next, and wish them all the best.”
Head of Facebook’s Social VR team Rachel Rubin Franklin, says they have “ambitious plans to learn and ship even more this year. With lots to tackle in 2018, I’m thrilled to have Eric on board. VR has such immense promise to connect people in new ways, and it’s only the beginning.”
