‘StarBlood Arena’ Will Be Free to PlayStation Plus Members in January

PlayStation VR owners will get a chance to hop into the fast-paced StarBlood Arena for free next month, a battle arena shooter from WhiteMoon Dreams and Sony’s San Diego Studio.

PS Plus members will have free access to StarBlood Arena starting January 2nd going through March 6th – when the game will supposedly revert back to its $20 price tag. As a multiplayer online game, it already required a PS Plus membership to function. If you happen to already have a membership, next month will be a great time to see if the fast-paced shooterbuilt for 2-8 players is right for you.

Can’t wait? Sony’s latest VR demo disc is now available for free, which features a demo of StarBlood Arena among many other released and upcoming titles. Check out the PSN store listing for the demo disc here.

We haven’t had a chance to pop in, but PlayStation Lifestyle rates it at a solid [90/100], comparing it mainly to Overwatch in speed and gameplay style. Some scores are less forgiving, with its MetaCritic score receiving an aggregate [68/100].

Different Types of Games For Your Kids

Parents should try to help their kids become social. There are many ways of achieving this purpose. One is to let kids play games online with other players, but make sure you understand the risks associated with this approach. For instance, you may want to teach your kids not to post their pictures or leak out personal information on the Internet. And this includes their fellow players as well. Some dishonest players may harass the kids using their pictures.

4 Great VR Party Games to Play With Friends and Family This Holiday

VR is so new that one of the regular activities of VR headset owners is introducing other people to the technology. Usually that means putting one person in a headset and standing around while they take their turn. But a few great VR party games let people both inside and outside of VR participate in the fun, and you only need one headset!

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive & Rift), Oculus Home (Rift), PlayStation VR, Gear VR, Google Daydream, and PC

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is easily one of the best VR party games out there, and, now available on Daydream, it’s also the most widely available. You can also find the game on SteamVR, Oculus Home, PlayStation VRGear VR, and PC (also Steam).

keep talking and nobody explodesIn Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, the player wearing the VR headset will find themselves sitting alone in a room with ticking time bomb in front of them. The bomb has a series of ‘modules’ which are miniature puzzles that must be solved in order to disarm it. The only problem is that the headset player doesn’t have the bomb defusal manual…. That’s where the other players come in: using a smartphone, computer, or even a printed copy, anyone not in the headset can access the 23 page bomb defusal document in order to aid in disarming the bomb.

The player in the VR headset has to relay information to those outside of the headset, and vice versa. The non-headset players will us the given information along with a series of increasingly complex instructions in the manual in an effort to guide the headset-wearer through the correct defusal procedure. Any incorrect moves mean a strike, and three strikes means you’re out (and by “out” I mean dead). There’s also that darn timer which doesn’t care how many strikes you have, it’ll blow the bomb once it hits 0:00.

The game is a blast (pun potentially intended, depending upon how good you are), and offers fun for a wide range of people, even those who are not experienced gamers or may not have any interest in putting on a VR headset. Because it has discrete levels (and failures), it creates a natural flow of passing the VR headset around; once a bomb is disarmed or blows up in someone’s face, that’s a good time to give the next person a turn with the headset. For adult gatherings, there’s also clear potential for a fun drinking game involving exploding bombs and shots.

Mass Exodus

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive & Oculus Rift)

Get a few friends with Xbox One gamepads, because this asymmetrical game lets a single VR player take on the role of the a giant-sized ‘seeker’ who must identify and hunt down up to four rogue androids – played by your friends of course.

While the seeker is sifting through the untold number of androids milling about the factory floor, rogue bots must try to blend in and scramble to switch off the control panels located around the factory and shut the facility down and win the match. Plenty of creative buffs help keep things interesting, so get ready for plenty of screaming.

Initially released back in May 2017, the developer Polymerse just completed an extensive overhaul of the game that’s improved match customizations, visuals and some of the sore spots related to the game’s AI and radar detection.

VR Pictionary with Tilt Brush or Quill

Available on: SteamVR (HTC Vive) or Oculus Home (Rift + Touch)

Pictionary is a classic board game where players receive a word and must draw a picture in order to get another player to correctly guess the word from the picture alone. Taking this concept and applying it to VR opens up a new realm of possibilities thanks to VR paint apps which let you draw in 3D with different colors, brushes, and effects. No matter which of the below platforms you’re playing on, you can play in teams (usually pairs) who compete for the high score, or a free-for-all, where everyone tries to guess at once and the correct guesser gets a point.

Tilt Brush (HTC Vive)

tilt brushTilt Brush, available for on SteamVR for the HTC Vive, has its own Pictionary functionality built-in (called Tiltasarus). Launch the game and rotate the Tools panel until you find the ‘experimental’ menu, then find the icon for Tiltasarus. Inside the headset you’ll be presented with a category and a word, but players outside the headset won’t be able to see it (even on the external screen). The player can then use Tilt Brush to draw the word and have everyone else look at the screen to guess what it is. You’ll want to set up your external screen (or maybe even connect to a big TV) in a central location to make it easy for non-VR players to gather around.

Quill (Oculus Rift & Touch)

quillIf you’ve got Oculus Touch you’ll also have free access to Quill on Oculus Home. Unlike Tilt Brush, Quill doesn’t have its own built-in word generator, so you’ll need to give the drawer a word before they put on the headset. The Game Gal has a handy free Pictionary word generator that also lets you configure difficulty or category.

Just like with Tilt Brush, you’ll want to make sure your external screen is set up somewhere that makes it easy for the guessers to gather around and see the drawing.

The Playroom VR

Available on: PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR comes free with the excellent Playroom VR, which includes a series of mini VR party games. For the most part you’ll need a few extra PS4 controllers on hand, but at least one of the games only requires one controller.

IKEA is Gifting 14,000 VR Headsets to Its Employees This Holiday Season

Winter Vive Deal: $600 for HTC Vive, Audio Strap, ‘Fallout 4 VR’ + $50 Steam Voucher

While it may be too late to ship that shiny new VR headset to your home in time for Christmas, this may be the last chance to grab an HTC Vive at its Black Friday sale price. To sweeten the deal, HTC is also throwing in a $50 Steam voucher to start the new year off right.

The bundle, which is available on the US-facing Vive site, includes an HTC Vive system with all the standard trappings – Vive headset, 2 basestations, 2 controllers, and a few other bits and bobs – but also comes along with a Deluxe Audio Strap for greater comfort, Fallout 4 VR (2017), a $50 Steam Gift Card, and a free trial to Viveport Subscription. At $600 with free shipping, it’s one of the best deals we’ve seen so far. Outside of the special sale price (while supplies last), the total would normally come to $809.

Neither UK nor Continental European customers will be so lucky though, as both UK and EU-facing sites advertise the Winter Vive Deal for a decidedly less friendly £600/€700. With purchase of a Vive, you can still nab a £50/50€ Steam voucher, Fallout 4 VR, Tilt Brush, and 1 month free Viveport subscription – but sadly no deluxe audio strap.

We’ll have our eyes peeled for the next price drops in VR hardware, so check back soon.

After 3 Years in the Making, ‘Blade Runner 9732’ Fan Experience is Finally Coming to VR

‘MuX’ Lets You Build Wild Musical Instruments from Scratch, Now in Early Access

Described by Danish developer Decochon as a “revolutionary music sandbox for VR”, MuX features virtual, low-level synth components that can be connected together and adjusted to generate unique sounds. The various tools allow the creation of complex electronic instruments, which can be easily shared with the community.

Now in open beta via Steam Early Access, MuX is an intriguing addition to the growing library of creative audio software for VR. Currently, only HTC Vive hardware is officially supported, but Rift users have reported success operating in SteamVR mode, albeit with incorrectly-shaped virtual controllers.

Presented with a number of virtual tools in a room-scale space, the user is able to construct all manner of sound generators, using a fundamental oscillator component combined with various modifiers. Most components feature adjustable dials for fine tuning, and serve as the building blocks for the creation of potentially enormous virtual instruments. These can be played manually with motion control, or triggered by buttons, switches, or metronomes. Alternatively, a marble spawning system can be used, allowing the construction of Rube Goldberg-type music machines that trigger sounds as a result of the physics simulation, as shown in the video below:

MuX’s inviting visual presentation, with clean, flat-shaded geometry and a muted colour palette disguises its complexity, as the modular components currently allow for low-level access to the fundamentals of sound synthesis. Currently, a set of somewhat outdated tutorials (created for alpha testers) can be found on Decochon’s YouTube channel, but this is an area that needs serious attention if MuX is to become more accessible to a wide audience.

As explained on the Steam store page, the software is due to remain in Early Access for a year, as the experimental nature of the tools means that users are likely to do unpredictable things. “While developing and testing MuX, we found people using it in ways we hadn’t expected,” writes Decochon. “They also made music and sound that surprised us, things we couldn’t have made ourselves. As we continue to develop and expand MuX, we find Early Access an opportunity to become informed and inspired by what others might create. MuX is an instrument, ready to be played, explored, and enjoyed by others than just us.”

‘Light Strike Array’ Fuses PVP Combat with Novel Locomotion, Now in Early Access

For some games, VR locomotion is simply ends to a mean; getting you from point A to point B in an efficient manner so other game mechanics can take the spotlight. Not so in PvP battle arena Light Strike Array, which integrates a novel form of teleportation into the very heart of gameplay.

Update (12/22/17): Light Strike Array has now launched in Early Access via Steam, officially listing support for the HTC Vive. The title is priced at $25, with a 12% launch discount running until December 29th.

“We think LSA’s fusion of hyper-physical mechanics and multifaceted teamplay breaks new ground in competitive VR game design,” writes developer Chris Woytowitz. “Through our development, we’ve been polishing a uniquely complex game that embraces full body interactivity, and justifies putting on an HMD.”

He expects the game to remain in Early Access for six to nine months, and says that the initial development focus is on “mechanically rich gameplay that embraces the unique capabilities of motion-tracked VR,” while the “Crystalpunk” aesthetic will be further developed down the road.

Original Article (11/29/17): As a crystalline being called a Shard, you’re given a torch and a weapon to combat other players. While it’s easy to explain the weapons (slash, shoot, smash enemies), the torch is another story. Throwing the torch teleports you to a new ‘Cell’, or landing pad. Sounds simple, right? Well, there’s a catch (literally)—you have to catch the torch as soon as you land, otherwise you’re left defenseless, effectively leaving you with more to worry about than just the enemy’s arrows or blades.

Chris Woytowitz, lead developer at indie studio Unwieldy Systems, says he chose the unique brand of teleportation to not only mitigate the risk of motion sickness, but to act as a natural skill cost to long-range movement, incentivising players to mix teleportation and local movement instead of simply over-relying on teleportation while standing in the same spot in their room. It’s easy to imagine dodging arrows, tossing a torch to find cover and nearly missing it by a fraction to a disastrous effect—something that otherwise wouldn’t occur if you were given free rein to quickly teleport wherever you like.

As for the PvP combat, here’s a quick breakdown:

Two teams of up to three players per team fight to destroy each other’s ‘Heart’, which is shielded by a powerful force field called the ‘Corona’. To penetrate the Corona, you need a create special tools from a gatherable resource ‘Salt’. Salt can be obtained by collecting halite crystals, which can be transformed into pillars of Salt, giving you a number of tools—but not the ultimate tool. The ultimate tool, called the Censer, lets your team bypass the enemy Corona and shatter their Heart. Victory.

Weapons include Light Bombs, bows, swords, and spells; but also the tools you create using Salt.

Light Strike Array is headed to Steam Early Access next month, with support for SteamVR-compatible headsets. The Early Access release is now available, see update above for details. The game’s full release is slated to arrive sometime in 2018.

Woytowitz says the full version will be “a generally more clean, rich, and balanced experience. I plan on adding a handful of new tools and weapons to afford more playstyles, as well as secondary map objectives (for example, capturable buildings.) The style and aesthetic will be refined over time and are subject to change (within the soft parameters of “crystalpunk.”) I’ll be improving sound, voice acting, and training levels over time, as well. I hope to continue to support LSA and grow the community through Early Access, release, and the future!”

Check out the Early Access trailer below.
